Titanic Yard Overhaul: Colossal Agave OBLITERATED in Garden Rescue!!!

  • In this backyard transformation, I have to first make my way through the biggest Agave plant on the planet. This thing was massive. It took me 6 hours of work and 2 trips to the landfill to remove and weight a colossal 1.3 tonnes. Not only that, it gave me a horrible rash on my arms, but nothing some antihistamines couldn't fix. This yard is mostly used by the homeowner for her dogs, and there was dog poo everywhere. Normally, I take the grass away, but there was just too much poo.
All up, I spent around 12 hours on this job, including 3 trips to the landfill. This is part 3 of 3.

    FAQ's:
    Q: Where are you located?
A: I am from Hobart, Tasmania, Australia 🦘.
Q: Do you worry about snakes?
A: I have never even seen a snake in over 5 years on the job.
Q: Which equipment do you use?
A: Mostly STIHL power equipment (battery and petrol) and commercial Honda self-propelled mowers.
Q: How much do the jobs cost?
A: Sorry, I prefer not to talk about costs.
Q: Why don't you use tarps instead of bins?
A: Tarps are too difficult to move through small spaces and lift into the trailer. The same for wheelbarrows, they are only good for unloading the trailer!
Q: Why are the hot water cylinders outside?
A: I would say it's because Australia had a temperate to tropical climate, and therefore it doesn't matter that much if they are outdoors. To me, though, it seems a bit inefficient to have them outside in Tasmania with a temperate climate (coldish for 3 - 4 months per year). But that is industry standard down here 🤷‍♂️
Q: Why don't you have help?
A: I've had many problems with employees in the past, so now I work alone.
    Q: Why don't you have a ride-on mower?
A: Well, there are a few reasons.
    1. I don't have the right trailer for a ride on, considering I always take away the green waste.
    2. I don't have anywhere to store it, as my shed is too small.
    3. A lot of the properties we do have fences and gates, so you can't actually get a ride-on on to the properties.
    4. I don't do enough big jobs to justify spending 15k AUD on a stander, but it would be nice to have one!
    5. I will get one as soon as my transport and storage problems are solved.
Q: What types of ladders do you use?
A: The large one is a Gorilla Adjustable Platform 150kg and the small one is a Gorilla Mighty 19. They are both adjustable.
    Q: Who/what is Jim's Mowing?
A: Jim's Mowing is a franchise business. The Jim's Group is the biggest home services franchise in Australia.
Q: Why do you have 2 channels that seem to be the same?
A: Quick Cuts (my original channel) has music in the background. Quick Cuts V2 is for those that like just machine noise, and it doesn't have music.

Agreed. This agave is a monster that had small ones growing at its base.

Oh my word, George. Talk about biting off more than you can chew, lol, one agave plant nearly finished you. Of course you aren’t going to cleaning up dog poop, it would be infected with all sorts of things, if the dog(s) haven’t been wormed etc. You are so thorough taking on these clearances, it’s a wonder you don’t throw in the towel. After all that, George, you do awesome work, I think you’re a bit like my hubby, it’s got to be done correctly, no half measures, God Bless your kind heart, you have helped another person in dire straits, Rosemary aka Ollie from Victoria ❤️🤗👍

I will always tell you George that you always deliver, which you do. Your ends results are always fantastic.
I just had to put my two cents in again about how disgusting this owner let this place get so run down and then ask for help cause she's had it rough as well as having health. I know of a lot of people who have heaps of problems in their lives, but they still manage. Even my next door neighbor has had it not so good. She lost her husband 4 years ago. She's just turned 92 and yet she still manages to keep her house as well as her grounds and garden clean and tidy without any help. And the gardens are not small.
So as I have always told you George, you always amaze me on your finishing results. Well done to you George.

I have heard of another gardener who innocently worked on a patch of a smaller agave and had the rash reaction you did. You cleaned-up and carried a ton of that stuff? Wow. Liked your solution of keeping the backyard solution simple. It turned-out neatly and is able to go on in better shape. The lattice idea was wonderful and looked absolutely great. I remember you working on a big rose and a big bougainvillea. This "smaller" looking overgrown plant had a lot of work tied into it. It really still is huge as you get down to the main core. Someone reminded us of the dogs. I thank you also for the rescue of the dog area. They will now have a safer and larger area to exercise in. This place originally had a lot of good planning and work put into it. Whether this had been a paid job or not, in this series you worked to your very best level and restored a now unworkable exterior back to pleasant and usable. Thank you very much. You recovered so much at the last, a normal walkway, stairs to the terraces, the access to a door in a shed, usable clothesline.

Trash on the patio, dog poo on the yard!😮 the owner owes you not only eternal gratitude but a gift certificate to a nice restaurant for a wonderful meal! I hope the rash cleared up. You take care. BTW, my neighbor and I are watching an agave plant in front of her yard that will be blooming soon, but this variety will die after it blooms!

Good morning ladies and gentlemen and welcome to part #3 of the Hoarders Nightmare on "What's in the Garden" with your host George of the Jungle. It is now 3am in Montreal, and a balmy (5c) early this Saturday morning. Would you call the Agave plant an "Aloe" plant? I've seen the Aloe plants in Florida get monstrously HUGE. (I don't know what the scientific name for the Aloe plant is). Wow, that was a rough part. But it looks great. A well done project for sure.
Thank you for joining us for "What's in the Garden" with George of the Jungle. Y'all come back now, hear !!

Agave is not aloe. Agave is spiny and hardy. If George were not wearing gloves it would hurt his hands badly, specially this big. Aloe can break more easily even by hand, and in it is gel. But aloe “births” smaller ones and can also get out of control. My aloe is in smallish round brick pots on purpose, so it remains small, even if it has multiple growths.

@@hazelco8622Hello, Thanks for your knowledge. I did not know what the Agave plant was, although it looked like an aloe plant, with which I was familiar. Sounds like a dangerous plant, for sure.

I have never seen one of those so BIG!! I was afraid it would eat you! 🤣😂🤣 I went back and watched Part 1 and 2 again before watching this one. WOW George you did a lot of labor intensive work here. Just after Part 1 the place looked soooo much better. Bet the neighbors loved that! Part 2 I could not believe how much trash you took out. But it happens when someone becomes disabled and goes into depression because of it. You are a very good man. The whole place looks so much nicer and opened up. When you dug out the walkway I had to laugh because in the whole of Part 2 I was trying to figure out how on earth you got into the back garden without standing on something LOL Now all she needs is someone to come and clean up all the dog poop on a regular basis for her. Wonderful job George. Hope this finds you all healed up from the rash attack of the Agave plant 😁 See you next kiddo!

There is a duty of care here for the relevant authorities to get notified so the dear lady can be assessed through My Aged Care for subsidised gardening and home help through our government. If she is disabled it is strange that this hasn’t already been done.

Wow!!!! That Agave was a nightmare, (poor you).. Almost made it worse than part 1. If the homeowner has two dogs and the yard smelled of dog poo, then I can see why you used the weed eater to level the lawn. Too bad it couldn't be mowed as that would have made the end results so much better. Still in all, considering all you did, the end result was a super human task and it is 100% better than it was. Kudos and props to you.

That agave is like the kraken! -Unbelievable unless you saw it! I think it was also beautiful, but it needed to go. -I feel sure it was just too much for this homeowner. I imagine there is a record for these sort of things - would be interesting to know where this one sized-up! lol.
I saw a hand tool the other day like the one you use 1/2 claw 1/2 hoe/hatchet - I bought it! IDK if I'll use it very much but it made me think of yours!
I kept waiting to see where the steps were for access to the upper yard - and OMG you found them! Not anywhere I would've thought. Now the property makes sense - a person could be proud of that yard, once you had finished! But that was a lot of up and down!
Thanks for all your hard work and letting us watch - you're the best!

I agree the agave was massive.
I know it was part of the job.
Seems the lady or someone was
    possibly interested but didn't follow
    through on scrap metal.
I have experience as an exotic nursery,
    Such as Japanese gardens and
    exotic lily ponds and landscaping.
