He knew that he was powerful and it made him glad knowing someone in his presence- even just a presumably innocent stranger- was aware of that, and terrified of it

I think it was malicious, but you bring up a REALLY good point! If Hughie were to call him out (not like he would but still), Homelander could claim he did it quickly so he wouldn't dread it as long.
It might’ve been malicious but I also think that hughie was scared at the time so it could’ve been seen as more aggressive than it was because we’re seeing homelander from his perspective
Homelander could’ve held him there no matter how hard he shook, but he held him there with as little effort needed for hughie to be able to move his arms by shaking. This is homelander before he snapped completely, still only fantasizing about brutalizing people openly. He’s basically teetering on the line of doing that now.
I hated their '' Next season is gonna be more gory '' like we gave a fuck about blood. We like character moments like these more than the gory fest. This was a great episode, well written and with a lot of character developement.
Heres the thing though, the blood and gore goes well with the silly shit happening in this show. I for one didn't know I had a need to see a whale get rammed to death by a speedboat, in an explosion of gore - until I saw it. At the same time, the overt use of blood and gore, reminds us that its a comedy show we're watching. If you have supes like Homelander not doing anything but just being terrifying, its a horror show. The Senate hearing scene doesn't work as well either, if people just fall over dead like if they suffered a stroke. It would however, be much more fitting in a horrow show, as only the doctor would need to die. However blood and gore is an integral part of the source material as well. Theres a scene in the comics, where Hugie and Starlight is alone in his appartment, and he goes down on her. They are interrupted by Butcher at the door, who only sees Hughie but starts laughing his arse off. Hughie is confused, until he see himself in the mirror and realize that Starlight was having her period - and it was not just a couple of drops.
I always found this scene to be disturbing. It's like they turned this superhero thing into a cult by claiming they were chosen by God when in reality they are all pretty much glorified lab rats in costumes.
