    I think this really showcases that once you add the HM2 to almost any preamp you can get instant chainsaw since the HM2 EQ is really invasive.

    Basically how I dial in my sound aswell, don't have an actual MT-2 but I use the Behringerclone after my MIJ HM-2, I usually go for a lightcrunch 5150 and cab CelestionV30's. Good video :)

    What a hell of a sound! Great! I would have used less distortion on the mt2 but the result is of course spectacular. The secret to one of the most iconic guitar sound. Great video. Thanx ! It is also possible to try the mt2 before the hm2.
    I want a t-shirt with the image of those two pedals stacked!

    I run the pedals opposite with the hm2 gain off and metal zone gain up and dial in the rest depending on the amp. With the guitar vol rolled down to 4, the Hm2 works great as an eq with the hi color knob all the way down. makes all my effect pedals come to life while adding amp style grit the metal zone can't do on its own. The hm2 as a stamd alone sounds super heavy btw. 👍

    The thing is actually to use the HM-2 in a non-maxed out manner, without the highs and lows not going more than 1 or 2 o'clock, and trying to use it as a "warmer" crunchy foundation preamp/amp drive, and utilizing the MT-2 akin to a "tightener" ala tubescreamer/overdrive.
    I actually managed to nail the SOTS tone by using a tubescreamer (or any similar pedal) boosting the HM-2 (which was dialed in with the level maxed, distortion very minimal, lows and highs around 1 to 2 o'clock-ish, barely just giving a touch of the signature nasal mid-hump) and then running it into a pushed solid state clean channel (somewhat in the early break-up territory akin to blues rock, just a little saturation), I'm going to make a video about it on early to mid-February.
    It's also totally doable with the MT-2 by the way (and yeah, well that's how they did it originally), and one of the tricks to manage the gainstaging (and avoid making it sound like a total stockholm chainsaw) is to keep the "tightening" boost pedal (either the MT-2 or an TS-like overdrive) at unity gain, not letting the signal level of your guitar going more than it should when going into the HM-2. I mean in a nutshell it's for utilizing it for the typical "tighten boosting an amp's lead channel" effect, but not overloading the gainstage of the HM-2 at the same time, and making the HM-2 act like a "crunched amp" stage while it still does a TAD bit of its signature nasal high mid freq bump.
    At that point, it sounds like that "Oh, it sounds like there's a Metal Zone but it's much warmer, not shrill, and a tad bit spongier!" thing we all hear on classic pre-1998 Gothenburg (before the widespread use of the 5150 and ENGL cabs/Savage heads) albums.
    Cheers for the video though. I also suggest trying out the highs and lows ranging from 3 o'clock to 9/10 when trying out different chainsaw voicings/album tones. I think Daniel Ekeroth's "max-max-max-max" video was taken a bit too seriously, and was mistakenly assumed a "gold standard" for having the chainsaw voicing. In many other albums I've listened to, I can definitely hear that it's not TOTALLY maxed out, especially the high knob varying between 7/10 and 10/10, depending on the band, and it even differs between the albums of the same band. It also makes a very big difference whether if the amp has a "modern" gain structure or an "oldschool" gain structure, if it's on the lead channel or the crunch channel. What I've mostly noticed is that, when you run it with the highs and lows maxed out into say, a 5150, ENGL or a Rectifier's high gain lead channel, it becomes instant Fleshcrawl, while others even go far as being like a "not-so-obvious chainsaw" in many other classic Scandinavian/Finnish death/black metal albums we hear. Also try the same with the DS-1 for a filthier rendition of a "tightening" boost, then it sounds dead similar to what you hear on Puteraeon, Bloodbath's Nightmares Made Flesh, Sentenced's Shadows of The Past etc.
    Apologies for the wall of text, really wanted to chime in about this stuff. Keep the videos coming! \m/

    2:22 Why most guitarists don't get semi parametric eq? The little knob is for gain (on the right as normal) or attenuation (on the left as normal) with zero effect in the middle (12 o' clock, as normal). The outer knob is to choose what frequency to gain or attenuate, or in other word where to place the bell or the scoop of the eq and it goes from 200 Hz to 5KHz.

    Gonna try this out tomorrow. I have a Laney IRT Studio that plays very nicely with pedals into the power amp, also just snagged a Bandit Silverstripe 112 for 50 Euro! So will check how that acts with pedals in the FX loop.
    Love the sound of those two stacked.

    I’d love to hear other pedal chains this way, any of the other HM-2 clones and stuff like a Plague Rat into a preamp distortion, or something uniquely interesting. This was definitely a cool demo; very Dismember ‘esque.
    The new In Flames I hated until I listened to it on iTunes. I’ve been told on Spotify it sounds better too. The TH-cam video is way too quiet and compresses the drums and guitars. It’s not bad, but pales compared to the original. Guitars on the new one sound like plugins and lack aggression. That little “breakdown” before the last chorus was stupid too. There’s a few more re-recordings but the original album is also on their untouched (one added instrumental). We’ll see.

    HM-2 into a distorsion (like the MT2) -> Stockholm sound/Buzzsaw tone
    Gothenburg sound like the one on "Slaughter of the Soul", it's the opposite. MT2 into a HM-2 without dist. and used as a boost/EQ

    That awkward Ola clap made me laugh! 😂🤘
    Great video and even better tones, Dominik! I don’t think you could get a better sound with that combination, to be honest. 👍
    You made me curious to your stacked video where you use the Fullbore Metal, instead of the MT-2. 😉
    Use the same digital settings, please. It’s a good enough base.

      It's actually a good way to sync the different video sources easily 😅

  • @Artefracture
    @Artefracture 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I use this setup with a modded MT2 that narrows the eq so it's way more useable and the fizz taken out of the distortion (you can still make it sound like ass if you really try though).
    But yeah, eq's all at noon, have the volume and distortion knobs facing eachother and use more gain off of the HM2. Amp, I just go everything on noon except crank the bass (Teal Stripe Bandit, pull the mids down too if I use mu Studio Pro 40).
    Clayman was the last great In Flames record. I appreciate what they're going for, but the new one just doesn't sound as good.

  • @Silaan
    @Silaan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    And now we know where the screeching feedback at the end of The Flames Of The End come from... j/k
    As for Clayman... since I never really cared much for In Flames I actually had to look both versions up. I prefer the instrumentation (so, the guitar tone, and the WAY more prominent electronics) and the harsher screams in the original recording, but actually prefer the (semi-)clean vocals, and that the vocals are less drowned in the instrumental overall, in the re-record. So, a bit of a mixed bag on my end...
    but, when it just comes to guitar tone, definitely the original recording.

      @@goatsurgeon If the Boss is like the Behringer clone, it's a noise reducer, not a hard gate. It's like having your own personal roadie roll down the volume ALMOST all the way.

    I probably would've tweaked the EQ on the HM-2, this sounds like straight up Stockholm tone. It's not too obvious AtG used an HM-2 in the chain just by listening to it & if I had to guess they probably didn't dime the L & H knobs. In the case of In Flames they definitely may have, but it's not too noticeable since the the HM-2 signal was recorded separately & mixed lower than the main distorted tone.

  • @deimosanomaly2579

    How about the lead guitar tone on Subterranean and The Jester Race? I've always thought it sounded great and I think it might have been these two pedals.
    And re-recording Clayman was so unnecessary...

  • @Makron220

    Well, this is still the more of the Stockholm sound rather Gothenburg.
    Speaking of Clayman 2020, I think the issue with it is rather production than the song itself.

    I feel like you need to turn the drive on the MT-2 down. Try to let the HM-2 provide the majority of the gain for the At the Gates tone anyways. The chainsaw is in there though. That's the winning signal chain 👍

    What I did to get close to the Gothenburg sound was run one amp with a hm2 and the other with the metal zone....boosting the metal zone with the hm2 was just too much considering that the metal zone is so hard already to get a good tone as it is

    Sounds more like the early Swedish death metal / Sunlight Studios sound rather than Gothenburg, which I much prefer, so no complaints from me. 😂 BTW, a Metal Zone can sound good in an amp's clean channel, it depends on how you dial in the pedal (which many people do not do well) and the amp used. 🤘
