Is that where my screwdriver went! Fancy that, my screwdriver made it on TH-cam before I did! Well at least it's found a good home, glad to see it doing duty on a classic boombox. I have a real soft spot for the classic boombox. I love their industrial design, the mechanical and electronics that went into them and their sound. Great video, I personally would have gone right through it and checked every resistor, capacitor and lubricant. But that's just me with those things. I'm a lot less fussy when I comes to electronics that I I don't care for like the Boomboxes from the 90's and onwards, some of them were actually nice but the rest just looked like piggs, those things get taken apart and removed from memory! They make good use for spare parts! Although I did take apart a sharp boombox that I wasn't going to put back, a few days later I found myself looking at it's main PCB and noticed that sharp used those beautiful Melf barrel type resistors! And then while looking at the cassette mechanism and noticed that the erase head is the active AC type! Boy! Sharp really went all out on this boombox! Who builds a boombox like this? I feel like putting it back together just to hear how it sounds but it's to late. Now I'm looking out for another one on eBay just to test it's capabilities. Your Sony boombox almost looks like it has the active AC type erase head! Not the cheap permanent magnet type. I believe that the erase head type makes the difference between a good recording and the average boombox type tape recording which always sounded terrible! Unless the other wires I saw were for the other side of the playback head!
Its not that I saved it, I bought it new in the 80s specifically to listen to am stereo. We used to have great music stations in am stereo and it sounded really good. Very close to fm but with a warm sound. If you ever heard am stereo you will know what I mean. You can hear am stereo on line. There js a us station that still broadcasts in am stereo and they use their studio am stereo air check tuner to feed their internet stream so you can listen and hear how good it originally sounded.
i would like to thank you for your channel it has given me hours of enjoyment , it gave me the courage to take apart my broken hitachi lcd tv and repair it, (faulty caps on power supply board)
Nice to see the motor not changed at all from new, dam spot on :-D. Some of the 70's motors had flying weights inside and contacts, they worked, but by the time i got to see them, they were all worn out :-(
Yes they were, recently i helped my frend get an 8 track going, the headstack was frozen on the rod, and one channel was dead. It used odd blue transistors in the finals, my mate had some in his garage in a draw, old but tested perfect :-). It had a quite chunky looking motor, but they had a habit of a double casing the motor in those days, noise screening i think. Apart from dirty pulleys and a very dead belt, the transport worked :-D. The headstack took a while to loosen, wd40 was left on it for a couple of days, then gentle twisting by hand slowly got it off. Worked great once the headstack had been adjusted. im not into 8 tracks but my mate has an old car, its going in that. He also had a cassette to 8 track adapter, you treated it like a cartridge then you put a cassette tape into it. Ive never seen one of those before.
Boiling the belts was a HUGE tip, wow. I bought this model because a station does C-QUAM locally and it matches my SRF-A100." :) Anyway, same deal as yours - great condition but needing TLC inside. I followed the same procedures as yourself, except for reusing the belts in mine. Tapes sound PERFECT after equalizing :D Thank you for sharing the knowledge!
These old radios are great workhorses, those heads are immaculate should last at least 20 years, its also got a great dc bias recording head, which is rare in a boombox
We never had AM stereo here in Great Britain. It would have been handy for the car before stereo FM was perfected. There used to be a beat cancelling switch when recording AM which changed the bias frequency slightly to avoid clashes with the AM frequency selected. FM here has more clarity than digital because of the low bit rate of 128kb on most music channels. I don't know if digital radio in Canada is any better.
Yes this has the beat cancellation switch on the back. 3 position. Digital radio here is broadcast in 2 ways. As a sub carrier on a commercial FM station, and as a phase modulated mono AM station. So HD radio as they call it (Hybrid digital) can be broadcast either way, but here in my local market it is all on the FM sub carriers. The big stations have 3 sub channels. HD 1 carries the program audio with the FM station, HD2 usually carries the AM sister station for the FM stations audio, and HD3 can carry something completely different. Here one station has music on HD1, news on HD3 and sports on HD3. Another one has music on HD1, talk on HD2 and traffic on HD3. Those news, sports and traffic stations are also on AM band.
We had it for a while here in Australia around the mid-80's but it never really took off where I lived. AM was mostly mono. Nowadays it's digital radio with a wide range of FM and AM stereo stations.
That's another cool video, I have the European one of the Sony, I have FM MW and LW. It's also sliver. I have mine on display as it looks very cool. 80s retro! 👍
The common problem I find on Sony boom boxes are Idler tires splitting in half. I use O-rings that I purchase from Harbor Freight as replacements. They outlast the factory original idler tires. No one stocks the replacements on these Sony boom boxes
I got a few different boomboxes sharp sanyo and hitachi the first hitachi 3d8 i gave to my dad i loved it but used it on batterys back in the day and was lucky if i got a couple of hours use out of it with the 3d superwoofer in use it used to eat batterys .One of the sharps i have has an electronicly operated back to back cassette mech quite complicated has two motors two fly wheels belts and 3 or 4 solenoids not sure what sharp was thinking with the back to back mech .
I'd like to thank you because you (along with Techmoan and databits) got me interested in the formats that I remember going out of service back in the day. It certainly isn't a crime to use 'New/Old stock'; isn't it better to use something as it was intended rather than just leave it gathering dust on the shelf?
I was looking for a Sony CFS model but when i saw 120voltvid talk about his, amd i thought this model is awesome, especially because of the very nice quality speakers, so luckley for me i found one locally, and it arrived the other day -The sound quality is great, but through the Left speaker the output is very low volume, i am going to ask Reddit same questions :D
Mark Markofkane Well if you wanted wow and flutter sure. Belts are a natural shock absorber and will reduce micro variations in motor speed as the motor spins. Also when rewinding and the tape hits the end prevents the tape from breaking.
I don't use it. That tape deck has not had any tapes run though it. When I got that radio it was for the am stereo. I have never used cassette tapes much. I bought into dat in the mid 80s and stopped using cassette. I didn't lube it because it has no hours on it and hasn't even been turned on since this video was shot.
Hello I just bought a used Sony CFD-626 mega base boombox everything works but the cassette player. I believe it is probably never been used. Any advice please let me know
Tyler Harris Direct drive is costly. Even my high end teac 850 is a belt drive capstan. My technics rem275 is direct drive. It was a bloody expensive deck though. My technics slm1 turn table also direct drive. This also drives up the complexity as special drive circuits required. Most vcrs were direct drive for drum and capstan. At least vhs was. Many beta and 3/4 were belt drive.
Would actually be nice to have a show of what equipment you own and love. Seems we all have our stuff that we never want to get rig off. I still need to get a 230V to 110V transformer to power up my tape deck to give it some maintenance.
Direct drive means motor / gear / bearing noise is that much more critical. There are some (cheap) direct drive tape decks that exhibit more wow & flutter than belt drive jobs with a decent-sized flywheel! The latter will take out the higher frequencies very well in particular. Hence why good belt drive turntables with heavy platters can still be every bit as quiet as a good direct drive, just arguably more expensive to make nowadays, and precise speed tends to be an issue. Around 1980, some manufacturers (e.g. Philips) also made some quartz controlled belt drives in order to combine the best of both worlds. Direct drive can be cheaper when you need just one motor, but rather not when you need a whole bunch. Belts still are a lot cheaper than decent-quality motors. Unfortunately, things that are soft and flexible always tend to be rather perishable as well. Some tape deck manufacturers used nylon gears back in the 1970s in order to reduce noise (Grundig was quite notorious for that). Guess what, nylon is hygroscopic and has a tendency to become soft and not withstand much force. That said, my parents' Technics SL-BD20 from the early '90s still is on its original belt, knock on wood! (Technics tended to use synthetic rubber belts. Not quite as good as natural rubber when new, but they hold up a lot better.)

The heat charges the molecular level in the rubber and helps it return to elasticity. This does not work with all formulations. I believe it only works with natural rubber. The synthetic belts don't shrink when you heat them. Or is it the other way around. Anyway worth a try if belt is slipping. It either works or it doesn't. More often it does.
I remember when I was a teenager I used to dream of owning a Nakamichi Dragon cassette deck. Never could afford one, but they are still pretty cool. And insanely expensive now, lol. Dumb question ... how did you get the 440Hz test tone into the scope?
Same, I wanted to own a Nakamichi Dragon when I was 16. Though this Sony boombox is almost similar to a Dragon in terms of the multitrack head, but minus automatic azimuth adjustments, but similar in they only record in one direction only and reverse play.

Is there a place to get good quality belts? The ones most get and what I’ve got are very low quality and the consistency is bad. I had to sort through half of 2 sets to find one that had a somewhat even thickness so it wouldn’t have as much wow and flutter.
Where can I buy the capstan belt for the CFS-6000? I bought a belt on ebay but it is the shorter belt. I need the longer one. The ebay listings don't give the lengths of the belts so I can't tell if any of them are the longer belt.
Belts are all sold by length. You need to measure the pulley length. I have demonstrated this with dental floss in the past. Thread it around tie it tight. Cut and measure. Subtract 5% from measurement and you have belt size. Don't ask me, i don't know any sizes off hand. When I need a belt i measure it.
I used cassette (with DBX noise reduction) during the cassette years. Now, if you remember from other demo's a tape recorded in DBX won't play in a non DBX deck, so this was used as a radio. I bought t as an AM stereo collectable radio. I had a Panasonic cassette deck in my car that had DBX. I hate tape hiss. It drives me crazy. I made the jump to DAT as soon as DAT became available and had a DAT deck in my car too for many years. Then Minidisk and recordable CD. I probably had one of the first CD burners on the market. It was a 2x CDR 1x CDRW only burner, and back then bank disks were over 10.00 for 1 and CDRW 20.00.
DBX something I will not use as I always using different decks . DBX is a one off I amusing MiniDisc cus I love the thing , I have the homebase SONY as the Mother , and 2 portables , one is a SONY MZ-N510 TYPE-S still works fine without abuse use as well as a SHARP MD but this one sticks after playing for 10 mins , maybe the LASER is burned down a bit . Portable MDs SONY I never got this to record input for some reason , got the manual with it but no playback , funny that . All better than using CDs for recording with that potective case . Still Mechanical cruelty as charged lol
Cassettes were and always will be "tacky little plastic things" I put up with limited interchangeability for sound quality. I had 3 home decks and a car unit with DBX, and would just dub a tape to a second copy for my old walkman. i used DBX to make my master mix, and then dubbed to dolby for the copy for the walkman, and another DBX for the car copy.

Maybe a dumb question, but why don't they used gears instead of belts?Noisy? They don't last longer than belts? Not feasible?

Is it correct that it can only record in one direction? Cause I only see one erase head on the left side.

Record in one direction. The auto reverse is for playback only. When in record it stops at the end.

Why you didn't clean and lubricate the tape deck mechanism? you should clean and demagnetise the recorder head and gum discs.
I don't use it. That tape deck has not had any tapes run though it. When I got that radio it was for the am stereo. I have never used cassette tapes much. i'm surprised they never made belts like the panasonic g deck plastic toothed belt, i mean i got one and is very reliable compared to rubber belts

Looking at the relatively high voltages the oscilloscope showed, he probably hooked it up to the speaker outputs.
Hook it to the speaker terminal.
The dragon was overrated. I worked on a few of them in my career.

Great Video, i have the same unit but after replacing the belts & cleaning the capstan , it keeps eating tapes. is there an adjustment for the speed?

I amusing MiniDisc cus I love the thing , I have the homebase SONY as the Mother , and 2 portables , one is a SONY MZ-N510 TYPE-S still works fine without abuse use as well as a SHARP MD but this one sticks after playing for 10 mins , maybe the LASER is burned down a bit .
Portable MDs SONY I never got this to record input for some reason , got the manual with it but no playback , funny that .
All better than using CDs for recording with that potective case .

I put up with limited interchangeability for sound quality. I had 3 home decks and a car unit with DBX, and would just dub a tape to a second copy for my old walkman. i used DBX to make my master mix, and then dubbed to dolby for the copy for the walkman, and another DBX for the car copy.
