    0:00 How
    1:11 Recognizing cases faster
    3:48 Save rotation time
    4:20 Corner in opposite slot
    5:48 Predicting first pair
    Recognizing orientation is not ALWAYS better than matching stickers or any other way. A lot of my recognition comes from "intuition" or "I just know", but the orientation technique is the best way I can explain where that intuition actually comes from.
    For predicting first pair during inspection, this recognition technique is the #1 reason I can do it in under 15 seconds.

      Hey J Perm I am sub 40 and I use 4LLL and take around 5 sec for cross, 25-30 seconds for F2L, and the rest for OLL and PLL(It is my first month of cubing.) I have watched about every video I can find that says how you can improve F2L but still I can never. I am sorry that I have asked this question about 2 times before and you always answer so thank you but I don’t know what to do now. I really like cubing but I might end up quitting because I can never improve.

    • @creepcrafting56
      @creepcrafting56 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What you need to do is to completely stop timing yourself, and just practice F2L, by just doing cross, and finding more efficient algs. LazerMonkey's every F2L case explained intuitively is a great place to go to. Other than that, example solves the only way to go.

      Krish Vijay it takes time to improve. If you've only been cubing for a month thats nothing. Keep practicing and learn full oll, pll. Good f2l comes with time.

    What's funny is that I actually use the top color to recognize a good/bad edge faster. I initially used your method of recognition, but I found myself glancing left and right too often which was somewhat tiring. So now I just look at the top color of the edge & the front center color facing me. They must be the same or opposite, else I rotate! But thanks for your videos anyway...they're super helpful ^_^

    This is immensely helpful, thank you! And it made me realize that this also applies to an edge that is in a slot with the corner on the top (i.e. if doing an R or L move to bring the edge up makes it a bad edge, then a rotation is needed). Brilliant stuff

  • @notusknot3002
    @notusknot3002 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Heres something I found that usually helps to avoid rotations: when you have a 3-move insert but your pair will go into the wrong slot (i.e. your 3 move insert is for the blue-orange pair but the slot in front of you is the blue-red slot), where istead of doing a rotation you can sinply do a wide D or wide D’ to move the slot, and not the pair. However, this may hinder you lookahead depending on how far in to f2l you already are.

    • @ratnakhan
      @ratnakhan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      GCubes but that will require a regrip to do d move then another to execute. only one regrip with rotation

    If you have a bad edge, you can pair them up and then insert using f R' f'. I saw it in Feliks Zemdegs 3.33 solve. Still really helpful! Thanks!

    • @AndyFischer
      @AndyFischer ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah any F move can turn a bad edge into a good edge. Doing a cube rotation with RUL moves is usually considered faster than doing F moves. But you can definitely use F moves if you want

  • @nabranestwistypuzzler7019
    @nabranestwistypuzzler7019 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    2:40 You don’t need to rotate right away. You can pair them up with R’ U2 R & then insert with a hedgeslammer on the left.

    • @JPerm
      @JPerm  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think using corners is very natural, but using edges first also works once you get the hang of this orientation thing, because you never have to re-recognise the edge later on.

  • @ankitsahni7929
    @ankitsahni7929 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sir,to recognise the EO FASTER,YOU CAN LOOK AT THE FRONT CENTER AND TOP COLOUR OF THE EDGE PIECE ON THE TOP .IF IT IS MATCHING ANYWHERE ON TOP EDGE POSITIONS OR JUST THE OPPOSITE COLOUR YOU DON'T HAVE TO ROTATE AS IT IS ORIENTATION AND IT IS EVEN FASTER THAN LOOKING AT THE SIDE AS I THINK SO.

  • @somekid5532
    @somekid5532 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    An easier ish but a little less helpful way of doing this is: if the side color on the edge is opposite of the color of the face you are facing, you will have to rotate to insert or use one of the two rotationless inserts. This is useful for me because for f2l I just focus on pairing the pieces up and then inserting, which may or may not be a bad habit.

    • @asr2009

    Nice! though I think it might be a bit easier to look at the top sticker and see if it matches the front or back centres, so we can know its orientation no matter where it is in the U layer :D

    Very, very interesting video, as most of the stuff you create. I think it could be useful for me and I'm ashamed I never thought of it myself, as I know the basics of ZZ and Petrus. Just two comments. As others have already commented I'd put it as top color of the edge is either front or back --> oriented, instead of side color is side color, for example, if the edge is in UB I cannot see the side color but I can always see the top color. Of course, if the edge is in one of the front slots then it's front color what I need to check against front / back centers. Anyway, if I need to extract the edge from back right I will have to check on side color, which is the one I will be seeing, to know whether it's comming on top oriented or misoriented. And, also, regarding misoriented edge -> cube rotation, there might be cases where a sledge hammer to orient it could be an option as well if it is either inserted in a front slot or in UF. Thanks for your great content!

    • @JPerm
      @JPerm  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Glad you liked it! I personally prefer side color only because the side color can touch the side center as it moves, making recognition easier in many cases; less thinking. It's invisible when the edge is at BU, but the pieces are always moving so I don't think that's a problem.
      And you're right, avoiding rotations is definitely better when possible!

    At 3:42, you say there's no way to insert that case without rotating. But, U2 R'U2R U2 R'UR inserts it without a rotation. Why did you say it's not possible?

    • @JPerm
      @JPerm  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean having it in that position for a 3-move insert. in other words the edge is flipped

    • @pragativarpe9521
      @pragativarpe9521 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JPerm Hey, now I get it. Setting up the corner and edge pair in a not-joint-together case and inserting it requires a rotation. But since the edge is already oriented, no rotation is required i.e., they shouldn't be separate. So instead we join them together and insert them. Phew! I didn't think you'd reply to such an old video but, thanks for making it clear J. You're the best.

  • @contractkiller7634
    @contractkiller7634 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Honestly if you start doing this, you might as well learn. ZZ has entirely pure benefits minus Eo+line being 1 move slower than cross max. Since youre already used to recognizing which edges are good and bad and can learn EO very easily. All it takes is practice for EO+Line. F2L will never have rotations and has less cases. And you can block build pairs and edges in. So F2l is more open, which could be more difficult, but also makes for really efficient f2l(ive done f2l in 17 moves and im not good at solving, my average is like 18, so somebody definitely could do it better, in like ~13/14 moves), then you are guaranteed to get yellow cross which has only 7 cases. Then normal PLL

    • @JPerm
      @JPerm  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I disagree, because it's general consensus that zz is slower than cfop for 2 hands. you definitely don't average 18 for f2l unless you're excluding eoline. cfop cases are generally easier to execute due to fewer regrips, OLL is pretty much the same speed either way, so you need a huge number of LL tricks for ZZ to match CFOP.

    Great video! I'm wondering if something similar exist for good and bad corners, and how to recognize it. So you already know if you have to rotate before seeing the edge.

    • @JPerm
      @JPerm  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      no, because RUL can change the orientation of corners but not for edges. also, corners don't affect whether or not you need to rotate :)

    Great video! Yet I still have a question. In the beginning, you said that a 3 move insert did not require a rotation. What if the edge was not oriented in the 3 move insert, wouldn't you still have to rotate? Same with the second case, where the top colors are the same, you could end up where the edge is oriented, so how exactly does looking at just the edge determine the case?

    • @JPerm
      @JPerm  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      if the edge is bad, you can't do a 3 move insert without rotating unless you use F moves

    Question: how do we deal with an edge which is inserted in a wrong slot?
    Say the edge isn't in the top...

    • @JPerm
      @JPerm  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      same thing for recognition, side color matches side center.
      BUT rotating the cube no longer changes its orientation. those are just special cases which are not covered in this video, so you can check bit.ly/bestf2l for how to solve them efficiently!

    I've been workung on more wide moves to avoid rotation, however sometimes it feels like it would be faster to do a rotation or a d turn to put a slot where I need it?
    Do you feel a d turn is good if it lines up and inserts a pair faster than a wide turn?
    Too many d turns or rotatatins take up time and cause me to have to search harder for f2l pairs, but one when efficient should be worth it, right?

      Put a chart on algorithm Everytime you get the case watch it and move, if you keep on doing it your muscle memory will pick it up and don't need to memorize.
