Compound timing with compound learning points, this has truly opened the lid on the nature of the more complicated rhythms and also the subtleties of notation: dotted, single and double bar. As a player of Metallica songs it also reveals what is technically behind the musical interpretation rather just developing a ‘feel’ for a drumming style.
Thank you sir. I've been learning the drums for several months now. I haven't tried playing a song yet tho. I don't want to play just any random song. I want to play something I really like. This song was one of my favorite songs growing up. A couple weeks ago I saw a video of someone drumming to this and thought "this is going to be the 1st song I learn". I printed off the sheet music and right away noticed the timing. I don't understand this at all so I gave up on it. This video definitely helps but I'm still confused. On my sheet music these parts you're showing are labeled 12/8. It always jumping back and forth between 6/8 to 12/8. Another song I'd love to be my first is Sad but True. However it's pretty difficult imo. Any chance you'll do a detailed video on that? Edit: I think I just figured out the 12/8 haha. I'd have to count to 6 two times in that measure, right?
Thank you sir for all your free lessons, you have guided me from a total beginner to playing al Jackson jr grooves , bonham drum parts , Carlton barrett reggae grooves , all i thought impossible two years ago , until i found your fantastic channel , thank you again sir , if you ever want free martial arts lessons , let me know , Thank you and blessings from Wales 🏴 . P s any chance of a joe morello lesson ?
Haha nice vid. This was the first song I ever learnt and played, I always thought it was a good one for a beginner due to the slow tempo, it lends itself well to repeating parts over and over then piecing it together
We had tracks with 3,5,6, 7 and an 11... I had to count a lot before 7 became natural!.. I'm not sure whether 7 beats to the bar would be 7/8? Or whether 5.. Is 5/4?, it was a bit like mission impossible timing.
Hey Mike, great video... great explanation. Have had a couple of loooong conversations with students about this! Unrelated but have dropped you a dm on Instagram.. just wanted to drop you comment in case you hadn't seen it.
I love the way you teach, man. Helps a lot! I'm mostly an ear drummer, but sometimes it needs to be broken down like this.

Definitely useful! Thanks Mike!

Yay! I was hoping you had covered this song! Thank you thank you thank you!
Not really a cover of the song! But glad if you've found it useful.
Thank you😊
I always go to a count when the track becomes confusing, worked a treat with Start Me Up, great stuff again Mike
