Nice to see you got the whole set! Not easy these days. To be frank, this was the first set I did not buy a case of (and I have not done that since until Ravnica). The minis in it are nice, but after the promising start of Tyranny of Dragons, we got a set that had a lot of the same Dragons again (some even the same size as before), and a lot of PC and elemental cult figures I really had no interest in. So instead I just bought one of each Common, Uncommon and most Rares that were easily affordable, though I did get most of the Rare dragons via Attack Wing instead. Today, I am only missing the Medium Black Dragon.
The Ogre and Ettin are really nice (I like the more Orc-ish look of the Ettin), and the Chimera is one of my favourite Chimera minis ever. The Owlbear is cute and chubby, if not as impressive as the PFB one. The Griffin is oddly small - I like to pretend it is a youngling. Same for the scrawny Troglodyte. And strangely, the Salamander and two of the Elementals are Mediums, while they are Larges in the 5E Monster Manual. The Wolf Spider does not have much detail, but at this time, the DMs desperately wanted a Medium spider mini (you should have seen for how much the Spider of Lolth and the Deathjump Spider minis were going for...)
My favourites are two monsters that oddly, are in this set, despite to this day, not receiving 5E entries. The Hieracosphinx takes us one step closer to finally having all Sphinx types as minis. They are the weakest and dumbest of their family, and also are evil -instead of riddles they just like to eat people and rob their treasure. The only thing that might make them spare you is if you can point them to a Gynosphinx (and she won't be happy for the attention, they refuse to mate with these guys).
The Darkenbeast is another old classic. By appearance, nothing special, some weird Pterodactyl-like monster, but they are favored insta-minions of evil wizards since they are created from any household animal by an evil spell. So yeah, basically what is a cow or goat by day, might become this monster by night and sent on some dastardly errand by its master, though they turn back once the sun comes up.
I appreciate what you guys have to do to get a full set. I know I could just look up what a set has but it’s so much more nice to get a full review and you guys do such a good job, especially on rarer sets like this. Thanks!

Some pretty solid miniatures in this set. Not all of them look great, but I could definitely see picking up the Gnoll Fighter, Griffon, Solar Angel, and Owlbear. The dragons look decent. The chimera looks awesome.
Some eu retailers had said a Reprint was due in may but I suspect it will have been pushed back given covid19

You cast the wolf spider as almost completely worse than a giant spider, but it is a popular druid form as it has a whopping +7 to stealth. Of course, I can see why you would want to leave that info out. :P
This one is my bad. I researched this one and didn’t notice the stealth when looking at the stat blocks. The parties I’ve played with have not taken (good) advantage of stealth. Thanks for letting us know! -Grady

I rly like The Cult miniatures and this whole set is awsome would love to get one of those wizkids outdid them selfs this time.
Nice set! The minis with translucent fire effects look particularly cool (or hot in their case!). My only complaint is a minor one, some of the dragons seemed to have a base too small for their size. Once again excellent set review with tons of interesting lore and trivia. You had a nice added touch of humor in this one! The Peryton joke made me snort ginger ale from my nose! And I've always liked the fun-sounding name of "svirfneblin" as well!
Yeah, I really dig that magmin mini. Agreed about the dragons. At least now (5 years later) we have a large assortment of dragons of various sizes to choose from! Heh, glad you enjoyed the video! :-P -Theo
Heh I see you like pronouncing Svirfneblin too, LOL! I first learned of them from the Drizzt do Urden books, so I was glad the first 2 Icons sets gave us one male and one female Deep Gnome - they only ever had one mini before in the WotC line, the Deep Legionnaire. In older editions they also had magic powers - they could cast Nondetection at will (useful when hiding from the Drow) and I think 4 Svirfneblin together can summon an Earth Elemental with a short ritual once per day for a few hours.
That's wonderfully thematic and fun! I need to bring them into an adventure sometime. Even if just to have an opportunity to say their name some more. -Theo
@@TheGallantGoblin I recommend reading the Salvatore Dark Elf trilogy (Homeland, Exile, Sojourn) if you like Underdark stories. Especially the second one deals with Svirfneblin a lot when Drizzt gets accepted to one of their cities. Also might give you ideas for an adventure. Honestly I think they are much better books than Crystal Shard was where Drizzt first appeared.
Brass dragons for the win. Love love love Brass dragons. I’ve tried to get just about every print I can find of Brass Dragons, but have to gotten around to getting this one. I love sets about elementals because our group has a few science teachers (surprise surprise the science teachers play D&D) and the chemist always gets irked by the term “elements” but he’s good natured about it. I’d love to see this set reprinted with proper bases and what not.

One correction I'd like to point out is that the Air cultist miniature is based on the art of page 252 in P.o.t.A. in the concept art.

The translucency of a couple of the minis are great! I would love to do a homebrew around all the elemental...one being good and the rest evil set in an island nation.
I'm hoping for a reprint of this set at some point soon! Wondering why it hasn't been done yet.

This set I really feel has a good variety of monsters that will see use regardless of the campaign, the problem I find so much in other sets are commons I just will never use.
More than anything I want a Ravenloft set, it's my favorite setting and deserves it's own run full of Darklords !
There's rumblings of a return to Ravenloft... maybe we'll hear more later in the year. -Theo

I would love to see you do a review of the Pathfinder Battles Crown of Fangs set. Any plans to do so? I appreciate how you discuss how to use them in D&D since I don't play Pathfinder but love their minis.
We do plan on reviewing the older Pathfinder Battles sets the way we’ve been filling out the old Icons of the Realms sets but there are several sets that are out of print and prohibitively difficult to get a full set for. Unfortunately, Crown of Fangs is one of them (the other cases we’re missing are Wrath of the Righteous, Dungeons Deep, Reign of Winter, and Heroes & Monsters). We continue to monitor when they return in stock and will grab them as soon as they do, but so far those 5 sets are the ones we don’t have. -Grady
Hey guys, when you say "on the aftermarket" what do you mean? Is there a specific website you use to get the minis or is it just a general term for buying them on the internet individually?
Miniaturemarket, Troll&Toad, CoolStuffINC, and ebay, in general. Aftermarket is a term used for something that has been released a while ago and its new value compared to the original release price.
What Shockwave said. We use the term as a catch all for buying single figures rather than buying a booster box. The FAQ on our website (linked in the video description) has a list of merchants online that we’ve bought from-the list is by no means definitive but it’s a start if you’re new to it. Some local game stores will also break open boxes to sell singles and we consider that the aftermarket too. -Grady

Thanks! I think the reprints happened earlier in the year. Every Icons of the Realms set is getting reprinted except Ravnica (it's possible they just had enough in stock of that one still) so the shortages will hopefully be a thing of the past or very short-lived going forward. -Grady
The "Temple of Elemental Evil" board game is still widely available, I think. So, if you don't mind painting your yourself, this is a way to get your hands on many of this set's minis.

Are the chromatic dragons in this set about the same size as the Tyranny of Dragons set? You mentioned they’re better suited as “young” - so they should be using 50mm bases?
Yes the dragons in Tyranny, Elemental Evil, and Rage of Demons all have similar sizes next to each other and are notably smaller than the new “correctly sized” dragons that have been releasing starting in 2020.

I just opened a box and had gotten a green dragon. Is this considered a wyrmling? It's awfully small for a 'green dragon' unless its a baby.
Dragon mini sizing has changed so much over the years that I would say just to use it for what makes sense in your collection. But on a medium base, a wyrmling would certainly make the most sense according to 5e rules. -Theo

La Myrmidon, Magmin and the fire bat look very good together, they can form a warband with the fire cultist as leader. BUT I'd like 2 or 3 mymidons and they are EXPENSIVE!!! 30 dollars or so. they should sell those minis as a group! and make warbands for the other 3 elements.

Which new single releases do you mean? I believe there's an Ettin in wave 11 of the Nolzur's unpainted line, but it's a different sculpt than this fellow. Or is there another Ettin release that I'm not thinking of? -Theo

You guys say that these dragons are young but the bases are wyrmling size 🤔
The dragons had very inconsistent base size and sculpt size in the early day of the line. Elemental Evil was only the second Icons of the Realms set to be released, way back in 2015. We always go by whatever the name WizKids assigns to their minis, but WizKids has clarified that only dragons released starting last year are correctly sized, thanks to Wizards of the Coast finally releasing guidance on standard dimensions for 5e dragons. However, those dimensions are actually too big for the assigned base size, so WizKids is having to release them on larger bases with the "correct" threat circle drawn on the base.

Old sets are being reprinted???
To our understanding, yes for WizKids sets. There's never an announcement about it but you'll notice certain sets being sold out everywhere and then suddenly every retailer getting 20+ in stock. Some bricks or cases you'll also notice variations in the miniature bases, like the way the names are stamped are different, indicating they came from different production runs that got packaged together. We've noticed this especially with Tyranny of Dragons, Rage of Demons, and Tomb of Annihilation. There was a big wave of Tiamats and Bahamuts around the time we released our videos for those as well, so we assume that was a reprint too. -Grady

the art sculpting of these mini are the worst, its like they gave it to a 5 year old child to create them.. worst ever paint jobs to boot.
