  • What do Ponce De Leon, Alexander The Great and Jason Giambi all have in common?
    Superstitions.
What are superstitions? Why do we believe them?
Although there are a lot of weird superstitions out there, there may be psychological benefits to believing them.
    Let's find out why.

Many of the ‘techniques’ that help overcome the algorithm, like clickbait titles, dramatic often angry or fearful facial expressions in the thumbnail, and making videos about the biggest drama of the day, ie Will Smith slap, Gabby Perdito etc, may help channels grow fast, but for all the wrong reasons. What I like about this channel are many of the qualities the algorithm does not seem to promote. Great production and content, interesting topics, honest video titles that are actually relevant to the video, and two awesome hosts. If it weren’t for channels like WF, I’d likely leave TH-cam all together.

Amazing comment, Jack. I CAN'T STAND the "new coolness" of video/article titles like: "You won't believe what Trump said" or "Do this one thing every day to look younger". I really hate it. I don't want this channel to do that. Sure we would get more clicks on a video like this if it was "People believe this one crazy thing makes them smarter" -- only to learn that it's crossing their fingers for luck?? I CAN'T STAND IT. I won't do it. Not ever. I don't care about subscriber numbers enough to compromise my integrity like that. But what's really great is: YOU NOTICED. You are appreciated.

Yeah it's like meditation. I played baseball most of my life. When I was playing in college and going to classes.... sometimes. This was brought up in Psychology by a professor that was talking about smokers smoking when anxious, stressed or whatever. He claimed going out having a smoke was basically meditation because you're silent taking deep breaths and getting recentered. I had some questions and he pointed out me being a athlete probably had a form of meditation and didn't realize it. So he filmed our next game(i didn't know or even see him there). So he plays it in class and pointed out when I was at bat I made the exact movements down to the tiniest at each time...if the situation got tense or a do or die situation. I would still repeat those same things but would take an extra moment to step aside and breathe in extremely deep and become so still I looked frozen. Of course we (Baseball players) have wild superstition that we are aware of and ritualistic almost too but the "meditation" subconscious stuff was cool...oh wow just got to the part about baseball in the video lol.Have a good weekend!

@@Scarethelocals, your baseball example is an excellent example of why absolutely everyone needs a, "therapist." We all do things that we're not conscious of. "The easiest person to lie to is yourself." When we 'lie' to ourselves we have an obvious desire to believe the liar. Lying to ourselves is often nearly impossible for us to spot and come to grips with. Without an outside observer we'll never see the things we're lying to ourselves about. We don't want to. Without some outside observer, some kind of therapist, we're not going to be aware of even the most objectively ridiculous lies we tell ourselves. We don't want to know. That, "therapist" doesn't need to be someone collecting hundreds of dollars an hour from you. In fact, you're probably better off if they aren't. A good friend that never lies to you is probably the best kind of therapist.
This is one of the reasons I always say that if you want an honest answer to something you should explain the problem to a small child and ask them their opinion. Small children haven't had decades of experience with lying to themselves. They're not very good at it. A small child doesn't have all of an adult's decades of self-lies to cloud their judgement.
I don't think your psych teacher did you any favors by forcing you to face the harmless self-lies you were telling yourself when you were playing baseball. While it's true that lying to yourself isn't a perfect solution there are definitely times when it can be useful. If your unconscious rituals helped your game then they helped. I rather doubt that they were causing you any harm in your life. Forcing you to see them made them conscious rituals. Which would tend to make them much less effective and more performative. It would definitely make you self-conscious about those 'rituals' and probably make you feel foolish about them. Your psych teach was probably aware of this fact. There is certainly no excuse for him to not be aware of the effect of pointing it out to you.
I could go on for a week about clever people being valuable until they are petty and self-serving and college professors are often some of the most petty and self-serving people on the planet.

Never rock an empty rocking chair.
Never place a hat on a bed.
Never have a dinner party with 13 people.
And lastly-I admit to doing this one--
If you leave the house, but have to come back for something you forgot---you must sit down & wait for several minutes before leaving the house again.

Also knocking on wood was done to check the ships timbers were sound. If they didn't make noise when knocked on then they would drill small holes in the surface looking for gribble worms if in cold waters or toledo worms in warmer waters.
