Raag Shukla Bilawal is a morning raga that belongs to the Bilawal thaat. It is a variant of the more common raga Bilawal, with the difference that it uses both shuddha and komal nishad in aroha and avroha respectively. The vadi swara is shuddha madhyam and the samvadi swara is shuddha gandhar. The aroha is S R G M P N S’ and the avroha is S’ n D P M G R S.
Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur was a renowned vocalist of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana, who had mastered many rare and complex ragas. He was known for his deep and powerful voice, his intricate taans, and his expressive gayaki. He had learnt Raag Shukla Bilawal from his guru Ustad Bhurji Khan, the son of Ustad Alladiya Khan, the founder of the gharana. He had performed this raga in several concerts, including a live mehfil in Bhopal in 19811. He had also recorded this raga for the Thaat-Bilawal album in 20072. His rendition of Raag Shukla Bilawal is considered to be one of the finest examples of his musical genius and creativity.
