I think it’s be real fun to play a traditionally very edgy character who really just ended up in this position accidentally and has just kind of been rolling with it since then. Like he doesn’t intentionally cut himself to activate the powers he just slips or something and then people get cursed by him.

This is one of my favorite character concepts lmao. Reminds me of that dnd story I once read where the seemingly edgelord rogue who was sitting in a corner with his hood up, brooding and twirling his knife, turned out to be as sweet and innocent as they come. But the catch was that he had severe social anxiety, thus the hood, corner and general mood. The knife was a gift from someone, maybe his mom, I think they were still alive aswell, and she had wanted him to just be safe out there. The twirling was in reality just him awkwardly fidgeting with it since that is what hands tend to do when you're nervous.
I LIVE for stories like this.

Edit: Actually, a neat way to make this happen is by this- Vampires need to feed on blood in order to keep them sustained and at full power. So, this archetype would make you sacrifice your own blood to temporarily give yourself vampiric abilities, like how a Vampire draws on the blood of others to empower their own abilities. This could mean taking some damage to turn into mist or a bat, or offering your blood to a beast in order to control them, and of course the classic “hurting someone else to heal you” ability. That could be interesting to use. The whole theme of Bloodhunters is “fighting the monster by becoming the monster”, so a vampire hunter with some minor vampiric abilities could work real well.
That is a notable exception. I wonder why it was left out. Seems more in-line with the Blood Hunter's theme than profane soul subclass is.

Matt should go all in if he ever decides to make more bloodhunter subclasses. Im talking Voodoo dolls, mirror magic, vampirism, mummification, maybe some kind of anti-magic inquisitor and all sorts of other weird, fun stuff.

A MAD build that having to get points in both Int and Cha to cast from the Profane Soul, Warlock and Paladin spell lists. On the plus side, more spell slots for more Divine Smites.

I don't understand the "cant use shields" bit you were using. Blood hunters get proficiency with shields and medium Armor

Blood hunters a while back used to not have shield proficiency, might be a reference to that

I love that Matt Mercer's stuff is so good, he's now getting accepted into official 5e stuff this MArch.... I wonder if his stuff like Blood Hunter will become canon too.
The Claret Orders are in the Wildemount Guide, as is an NPC statblock for Bloodhunters, but I don't know if the class itself while ever be.
Don't get me wrong, a lot of his stuff and ideas are definetly amazing, but I don't think that's the main reason why his stuff gets accepted,its because of the huge customer base who will buy anything. :)
Although I'm all for new classes, I don't think we'll be getting one, considering we just had Eberron, and it hasn't gotten a single UA yet.
It’s a class on D&D Beyond, plus Matt said on the latest episode that it’s able to be played as canon now

Just so you know (and maybe you've already been told this), Profane Soul is a 1/3 caster like Arcane Trickster or Eldritch Knight

Playing a Blood Hunter in my game. Order of the Ghost Slayer. And she’s like the most happy go lucky character I’ve ever done.
Having not previously taken a gander at the Blood Hunter before, the 2020 version is my introduction to the homebrew class... your guide summed it up for me in a cool 7+ minutes. Awesome, well done!

One of the favorite concepts that I have with this class is a Monk/Order of the Lycan Blood Hunter. Since in your Hybrid form you can apply your Crimson Rite to your unarmed strikes, you can deal crazy good damage when combined with Flurry of Blows

I've found that order of the mutant is a great way to play a splicer from Bioshock. I'm currently playing a goliath fighter/blood hunter, basically a medieval big daddy
Funny thing, part of my campaign goes into a timeline that is sorta Dark Souls/MtG’s Innistrad inspired, and a group of NPCs is a Lycan Bloodhunter order. Some are your typical edgelords, but others are either new recruits who want to help others, some were cursed with the lycanthropy and joined so they can control it(again to provide aid to others, but also because they like the power it gives them). Then there’s a few that went full beast, perma-hybrid or full beast form at all times that act as scouts, scholars, and occasionally teach or provide aid to the youngest members of the order. They work closely with two churches- That of the afterlife and stars, and that if disease, necromancy, and the Eclipse, so they get steady aid from clerics of both Death and Grave domains.
And now; “Especially the Witcher” will be the new biggest meme. Let it flow.

The answer is yes, as he is not an employee of WoTC, but the class is ballin', so it gets a hall room pass the other homebrew don't.

Minor correction: Profane Soul Blood Hunters are actually considered 1/3 casters, like Eldritch Knights and Arcane Tricksters, rather than Half-Casters like Paladins Rangers and Artificers.
With this, there are now *3* Int-based 1/3 casters if your DM allows Matt’s Blood Hunter!

I had a good idea for me and one other friend to do if their okay with it. I give them a premise character sheet. A blood hunter named Geralt who was specifically made to have stats that match him and then give them a campaign that’s literally the Witcher games. Make them play the Witcher in dnd
If I ever do a D&D campaign I’m 1000% going Blood Hunter because of how much I love Bloodborne

I love the Warlock, Sorcerer and Blood Hunter class. One thing that you "seem to get wrong" (only in your description) is that as a Profane Soul Blood Hunter you do get access to Eldritch Blast (Without the possibility of using the Eldritch Invocation: Agonizing Blast - Which you are unable to access using the current Unearthed Arcana feat "Eldritch Adept", since it is restricted to the Warlock class specifically). That being said Eldritch Blast is still very powerful and using cantrips like Green-Fire Blade, Booming Blade and Eldritch Blast in conjunction with your level 7 Mystic Frenzy - Blood Hunter Feature your will find yourself having a very versatile way of dealing damage. Playing around with Feats like Aberrant Dragonmark and Wizard Ritual casting you really become quite powerful. Also choose the Undying as your patron, so that you gain more health for you blood curses
I made a interesting condition to go with this: mass bleeding:
when the damage type is: piercing, slashing, bludgeoning or force and, a critical hit is rolled, or the damage rolled for that attack was the maximum. The mass bleeding deals 1d8 damage per round until treated with med kit potion or spells, magical items or innate magic abilities will also work.
So 0.07% chance with 1d8 attack dmg, feels totaly posible and useful lol
Triandal Berethryl if it happens too often, low level encounters will be a pain, there are latter abilities to use 19 as a 20 or get advantages on rolls, evoker have ability to maximize damage, there might be more of similar abilities.

Just started a curse of strahd campaign as a blood hunter, so far I really love the abilities. I plan on being an order of the mutant who makes a lot of potions and crazy experiments like a mad scientist

this video helped me finally understand the blood hunter
I play a half elf bloodhunter who joined the organization because he wanted to keep his parents (who he absolutely adores and is like a big kid around them) safe from monsters. He became a lycan because the person who recruited him suggested it. finally his parents fully support him and love that he is doing work that makes him happy. Xeo essentially has all the trappings of an edgy character (gruff voice and all) but is a sweet person who genuinely cares for people if you can get passed the gruff exterior.
I know Davvy does it as a joke But there are some people out there that seriously extremely dislike Homebrew But really people should just be allowed to flex their creative muscles and even though They might make some stupid overpower stuff. There are those out there that make really good Homebrew. That's a very balanced, fun and interesting.
It is known (as far as I know) that the ritual to become a bloodhunter can sometimes claim the life of the one that undertakes it. Mary is (or was, depends on who you ask) one of the people that undertook it and was in turn slain by it. Explosively as a matter of fact. But mama didn't raise no quitter! So she held on to life and clawed her way back and as it turns out, even if the ritual kills you, that doesn't mean it don't still work as intended. And with these new prowess she has taken up the path of hunting undead, what with her now having a.... Uniquely advantageous position to get in the mindset of her chosen quarry.

Zariel tiefling + profane soul of the fiend + green flame blade + flames of pleletegros + rite of the flame, you and your sword are constantly aflame using hellfire and blood Magic, People who hit you take fire damage and you get to reroll bad damage rolls a lot, especially with great weapon fighting. Starting at 7th level casting green flame blade is much better than extra attack dis to your bonus action attack, it is great

So if you want to be a Hunter from Bloodborne, what’s the best then? The Lycan? Or some other combination of stuff. Really want to find a way to incorporate sword and pistol combat. Or Crossbow I guess. I guess Arcane Hunter would work with that caster version I guess.

They still get shield proficiencies. Blood Hunter was my first 5e class and I love this new update version.
Blood Hunter seems more like a blitzer, bushwhacker, duelist, or hit & run specialist. Someone who can do a lot of focused damage really quick, then run (or die). A human(oid) missile.

I will saw that I some folklore, ghosts do have a sort of yellow-ish blood. Not ectoplasm, but European alchemists bf believed the through distillation of human blood, blood of the spirit could be extracted. (Blood basically broke down during the process and caused it to turn yellow.)
It really is just the Hunter from Bloodborne, Solomon Kane, Van Helsing and Geralt of Rivia thrown into a blender.
