25 acres by 25 acres, so it's a cube then or is it a tesseract?
4:00 I'm not sure that's true. If you brake in the merc hard enough (without assistance) then the hazards automatically come on. I know because I drive these vehicles. The automatic hazards are caused by rapid deceleration.
Actually that is true, hazards do come when you brake hard. However, if the ABA 5 has not kicked in then the hazards will not stay on they will switch on and then go away.
"slightly off to the left" He's just making up excuses for the bad design at Mercedes lmao, if you guys drive a Mercedes, before you crash you'll have to make sure you are exactly dead on with vehicle.
Hi Daniel I have watched your channel for a long time, although I'm in the east midlands and you are no where near me I still enjoy your channel. Anyway I worked for a main dealer for 16 years and its annoying that although I understand it does what you described, I never got any training regarding these systems. For me the technician should know about this so when a customer asks we could answer them. Glad to see Mercedes have given you a chance to test out their systems! Keep up the good content 👌
And when you go up certain slip roads with a wet road surface it can pick up the reflection and go into the emergency mode. Always happened when coming off the A46 onto the A45 mid afternoon with the sun behind you. when it happens to you twice with a fully loaded double deck trailer on you have to change your pants. I always turned it off when approaching that junction after it did it too me twice.
But what happens when the truck is not coming straight at the obstacle? Things are rarely in a convenient place? I have a huge problem with these driver assist mechanisms. it dumbs down the skill it takes to drive a wagon like this, or indeed any other vehicle, That said, this was fascinating!!! Also, when towing a fully laden trailer, there are a whole other set of problems
I think the problem is the inflatable car not being a large solid object. That’s why the instructor said “Aim for the yellow cube”. I may be wrong but that’s the only reason I can think why it didn’t work
I disagree, it doesn't dumb down the skill at all but in fact makes incompetent drivers that shouldn't even be on the road in the first place more lazy behind the wheel. These sort of assistive technologies are sort of catch 22 in that regard, and perhaps highlight a bigger problem with drivers today.
so basically to sum it up, merc dont want to use a fully loaded trailer asif thats what trucks on the road are like (ignoring the fact most fun fully loaded at 44tons), their system wont work in real life situations, sounds to me like its a bad product all over which is no suprise after working on merc hooklift lorries and i can tell you they are build of papermache and are slow as lava. always breaking down and i wouldnt even go near attempting any sort of offroading in them... id take a man, volvo, daf & scania any day of the week

You showed a clip on the screen too but not in the video. If you approach a roundabout on cruise control on the brand new trucks, it detects teh roundabout and slows you down appropriately. Often going around the roundabout at 15mph or so, then accellearates on the other side back up to speed. But likewise I have had the sensors detect a vehicle that was in the next lane over turning right, where the system has applied the emergency breaking unnecessarily. However, that was the older system on the 2017 trucks so probably there are updates now.
That was really interesting Dan. It’s a really good system. I feel sorry for the instructor 😆. Your really good at this stuff. I believe Hollywood is calling 😎.

@@markussavolainen Ty, the acres part was making it confusing. As 25 is a bit different to 625. In regards to the driver having an accident. Sure I would blame the driver for it as long as he is in charge of the vehicle. If he were not I would call him a passenger. But to say that a system only works if he does everything the rigth way and not to call it a limitation of the system does not work for me. If someone would have to do that much correct and focus on it, should he not have used that attention to stop on his own?
@@user-kl3il9mw8i it is a limited system for sure and so are really all the systems that aren’t full self driving. The purpose of it is to be just an extra level of safety after all. Can anybody tell me why there has to be a box under the rear of the car, presumably to provide a bigger target for the radar to recognise the object. What do you all think?
My Volvo passenger car has had this tech for years (it's a 2018) and as far as I know it works even when you go 'slightly left'. Is it more difficult on a truck? Or is Mercedes tech just not as good?
I can't help but feel it was giving alot of room, like ALOT. Would it beep if you got within 5 car lengths whilst driving regularly? Wouldn't like that!
I've driven trucks with these features and they are great but there is an emphasis that these are not designed to stop collisions but designed as an Aid. No system is perfect yet but they will get better and better. These things are better to have than not to have in a truck. The ABA has saved me once and once was more than enough. These systems are more of a safety net that is better to have than not to have. There are many limitations but they will become the future and the standard.
There's something wrong with the braking system on that Merc truck, 1st they tried blaming YOU , apparently you weren't in line with the stationary car and then on the 2nd attempt, if you look at the overhead drone shot, the dummy car is slightly offset ? Now if your a truck driver careering towards the rear of a car, your obviously going to deviate your steering to either the left or right to try and AVOID hitting that vehicle , it's human nature , so inherently there's a fault in the working design of this object avoidance system, so mercedes, fix it !
I have a 70 plate Mercedes Sprinter with this on and has camera in front screen and i'm not keen, in slow moving traffic it can slam the brakes on it's embarrassing, If someone pulling out on you either from a side road or even worse on motorway it's bleeps its head off and can try braking, Id have thought it be worse for a truck travelling on motorway in slow lane and someone merges on to motorway the truck be slamming brakes on, The system on my van seems to work when it wants because sometimes it would let you hit the vehicle in front, me personally would prefer not to have it on my van
Would Active Braking Assist not be more beneficial in 'Real World' environments if it wasn't designed to stop in a safe distance (eg lots of chance the radar misses as shown and potentially removing driver awareness) but instead designed with a wider radar but only activating braking when the system computer detects the maximum braking distance is 100% passed? I get that this would result in potential impacts albeit at a much slower (survivable) speed but also mean that the driver still retains all the control unless in extreme circumstances. Basically a system that only activates in a real emergency situation rather than another system trying to take over some of the driving.
That's already pretty much what it does. Narrowing the field of view of the assistant also means less false alarms, it was really a problem in the previous generations where it detected stationary signs etc. along the road and triggered the alarm. Also, reducing the efficiency of the assistant for "more control" makes no sense at all since the driver always retains complete control anyway, even during the emergency braking, by activating kickdown.
And when you are in a perfect condition for this system to work in real life. What about the truck driving behind you? It'll probably won't have enough time to react on you making a emergency break and will probably push you into the car in front of you anyways. The only thing gained then is a collision with reduced speeds which will probably cause less damage than without these systems...
So I have been in a scania when the auto braking kicks in we was on a slight bend and the van with trailer pulled out of a side road it was early morning I December so not light but it worked perfectly and was I the only one to see the guy with his hand up the top during the second test where it pulled up an I the only one thinking that he might have been adjusting something
The problem with this is when the driver depends on it when they are tired. Like the auto pilot on a Tesla that people use to rest their legs an arms on long journeys. With all new rules for drivers, why are more vehicles being designed in a way that the driver has to be interacting with the dashboard console. It’s great having the new tech. But not good if it’s going to cause you to get a fine for trying to use it.

It's an assistance system like Daniel said. Basically a last ditch effort if the driver somehow fails to stop themselves.
So basicly this Mercedes stop system won’t work in a real life scenario
If you're going to crash make sure you're going perfectly straight 😆
The comment i was looking for lol
So basically the ststem can detect if you're off to one side and might navigate around something instead of stopping you
I don't know why he said that but definitely don't need to be lined up car can be sideways and it will still work.
It honestly will work, ABA 5 is very very good, in addition is the PPC which will slow down and accelerate all by itself
