    I remember a novel I read as a kid about a family of Mexican shark fisherman, that talked about how whale sharks were a nuisance because they tore the nets. It was fiction, but it was at least partially based on reality. I wonder if the original story was something like that; a big shark causing problems with nets got embellished to sinking boats and spiraled from there. Or a couple of guys in a rowboat checking their nets got capsized, etc. Maybe they just exaggerated the story to get free drinks from tourists

      Dude ive gone fishing in the Sea of Cortez with the locals not once did they mentioned the Black Demon nobody is monetizing on this myth and nobody is trying to scare away tourist with the black demon. The locals that i went fishing with werent ignorant to marine biology they literally been fishing all their life and took us to a spot where we caught like 20 fish in less than an hour. Again not once was the Black Demon mentioned i just found about it this week here on youtube.

    I feel like a lot of these stories comes down to "humans are not great at estimating length" and also "humans tell tall tales because humans generally like telling stories".
    I think the whale shark thing is pretty likely, if it's anything, but I'd also suggest that humans in a panic (say, if they saw a massive great big fish near their boat) are crap at remembering details. My brother played a robber to teach some kids about it, and he was described as both dark skinned, light skinned, quite short and pretty tall. Someone panicking about a shark might easily misremember a great white (especially underwater) as being darker than it actually was. Add in conflicting stories from different people with different memories and hey ho, you've got a massive black shark that attacks ships!
    Makes for a cool story though!

    I love this series. It's so hilarious. XD
    The black demon shark is real!
    Jk. 😂 I had to say it since you dared us. My thoughts:
    1) interesting how after the Meg aired, so many more "sightings" of the black demon shark popped up. But yet no video footage, or quotes from fisherman are around. Hmmm... highly suspect. 🤔
    2) I'm getting to the point where hearing the Meg annoys me. I can't imagine how much more frustrating it is for you.
    3) I think a whale shark is probably the best match based on size. And there is some video out there where a juvenile whale shark was curious about a boat and was nudging it to see what it was. Someone not knowing any better might think the whale shark was attacking it. 🤷🏼‍♀️
    4) once again. When the black demon movie comes out, I will rely on you to watch it so I don't have to. Hahaha

    There's plenty of Badass critters down in the depths of that Sea of Cortez. Those sizable Humboldt squid give me the creeps.
    Way they communicate with each other, using "internal" light shows. Saw a documentary back along where a scuba diver, covered in chain mail, dived down in the Cortez at night.
    Immediately surrounded by the things, like something out of Riddick's next movie. Even when caught, they remain aggressive, spraying ink etc.

    Fun episode! Def glad I watched it.
    Quick question; I was taught as a child that whale sharks were whales and not sharks, but considering you’re a shark scientist, it’s looking like you consider them sharks. Was there some sort of classification change or was I just being told a myth?
    -also when fight?-

    • @stevietubing
      @stevietubing 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      As I’ve understood they’ve always been classified as shark, it’s a fish, whereas whales are mammals and need to breath air

    • @trouttoucher
      @trouttoucher 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      yeah, you were taught wrong. the whale shark is a shark that just happens to feed on plankton (like whales) and is also large (like certain whales). that’s basically where the similarities end

    I recall seeing some video years ago on YT, maybe it was taken down, where they did have a documentary allegedly featuring locals from Mexico talking about it. In my opinion, I believe some fishermen really did see the black demon and it probably did knock over a small boat killing someone but it was probably a long time ago and the black demon is probably long been dead. I think it was definitely the skin melanin thing you described making it jet black but now people are probably muddying the story by confusing all these recent sightings of whale sharks and people are getting caught up in the hype of it, when the real thing from the original story has most likely died awhile ago. The game of telephone really exposes how bad humans are at relaying data through word of mouth. LOL

    I think my favourite aspect of the "megalodon lives" theory is that people never seem to mention HOW MANY there would need to be to sustain a population of them over the millions of years post-extinction. There's always talk of one rogue giant, and even in "Megalodon: The New Evidence" (another Discovery sit down style doco with the lead character from the meg doco) it's noted there are two megs. Just two. And the host was like "that's a pretty big claim". Do these meg conspiracy theorists seriously believe that there's just one multi-millenia aged shark plodding around?

    Dude, just because you haven't seen a quote online, doesn't mean that there is not a fisherman who would tell you what he has experienced...It is pretty easy to sit at a desk and study your laptop and pompously admit what YOU don't want to believe because YOU can't see it from your position...The fisherman always warn people stay as close to shore as possible, and not to ever drive down the middle section of the open sea, the reason being that this particular breed of shark will bump the boat, seizing the engine or just completely destroying the vessel all together. Keep in mind that they use row boat styled vessels, which are very close to the water and can be flipped over by quite a few species of marine life just swimming around, but most marine species don't bother to flip over boats, which is a very specific predatorial/territorial type of reaction to a motor driven vessel...That documentary that you watched, actually has a part where the yacht was hit, the engine was seized, and they were pretty much in the middle of the ocean, without any rock formations directly underneath the boat to have done that... How about getting a team together that is willing to go to the Sea of Cortez and use a Drone(sky), Remote controlled Row boat with an engine and 360° cameras (below & on top), and a submersible vessel with cameras (360° viewpoint) and find a place per the fisherman where you would be most likely to bump into this creature, be sure to go back and forth with the boat, so you are sure to upset it enough to get its attention(it doesn't like the noise from the engine, apparently...). Most residents of Mexico are very poor, so they don't always have the technology that we can take for granted, such as, a Cell Phone, with the most advanced camera in order to get the ground breaking footage you require in your order to believe what they have been saying...And just so you know, a 20 ft Shark can seem like it's 100 ft to the shocked/traumatized victim who lived to tell everyone what they saw, because they do not have a measuring mechanism in their brain that will correct them, even though they were 80 ft off, they just understand that it was a big fish, bigger and meaner than anything they have ever saw, so... Bottom line create a team that you will lead in person or that you will direct from abroad and use all the surveillance strategies already discussed and then make the video about happened 🐈😃😊

  • @tatianasafi4458
    @tatianasafi4458 ปีที่แล้ว

    As I was watching this and based on the info shared here:
    1. It was black
    2. Measured between 20-60ft in length (lol they might as well have said that it measures anywhere above 20ft haha)
    3. Whale carcass on the beaches.
    I immediately thought of Orcas. However, i highly doubt that orcas ever killed and ate people in the wild. But they do eat other whales.
    Also, orcas can go up to 30 ft i think. They also work in groups to takes down their prey and they have been able to cause damage to boats by eating off propellers (probably just to play around lol)
    Perhaps these people never noticed that there were more than 1 of them around so they assumed them to be 1 big giant demon 😂
    Please note that I am not a marine biologist i am just a marine science lover so I apologize if i’m mistaken with my data here!

    Color wise the same logic of the Whale Shark appearing darker can apply to the Great White since they're usually dark on top and white on bottom but size sise yeah it makes sense for it to be the larger sharks like Whale Sharks since the longest one is 20 feet Great White compared to 50 to 60 feet of Black Demon

    It’s most likely a classic case of folklore and legend leading to modern day claims made off of false identification. It’s probably a story that’s been passed down for generations, and in that case it certainly could’ve existed at one point even if it was still exaggerated in the stories, but would be long gone by now.
