I know someone who had a pet bullshark..
Before you think it was cruel, he is the top fish expert in Australia, has 30 5+ million litre ponds, used by governments, universities and public aquariums to design equipment and catch large fish.

I love the idea that this film is going to make us all think deeply about our effect on the planet ...
... and then blowing up an incredibly rare, endangered shark for the big finale! Not sure Lucas's character really, truly redeemed himself at all then, lol

The black demon being a completely different level of shark (by mythology at least) that is more spiritual than living animal... I wouldn't be against peopme blowing it up to settle their own inner demons while the actual manifestation waits for the next group that has their own skeletons in the closet

Nacho is actually a fairly common nickname, short for Ignacio. The cheesy chips are named after the cook
cook who supposedly invented the dish

I had heard there was a guy named Ignacio, who would frequent a restaurant and order broken tacos with everything on it, did it so often, they decided to name the dish after him.
But, I guess it’s a game of telephone now.

So my take on this film (and I'm not sure if it was intentional or just my own creative brain) was way more spiritual/mythic. El Rey (the rough gruff leader), his name literally means they kind, but also a play on rey/ray being similar to sharks, was actually Tlaloc Himself. He was all for the wrathful vengeance upon eveyone until he realized the kid had left an offering of candy (which to him, esp in that situation was a high value offering). That was when he relented and allowed the rescue. But the dad had to sacrified his life in atonement for the damage he had caused, there was no way around it. The explosion destroyed the real "black demon" the rig, as well as the one who was responsible for it. But that was my take

You say you're "a little bit lost" on the human side of the plot, but you're actually describing it pretty perfectly. The oil company has been threatening Josh Lucas's character not only with the loss of his job if he didn't follow their orders, but also potentially hiring someone to hurt and/or kill his family as well. And they intended to kill him with the bomb planted at the oil rig to hid the evidence he'd discovered and make his death look like an accident. But his family escaped with the evidence intact and now the oil company can be held accountable for their actions by the law.

So I waited to watch your commentary until I saw the movie, so I’m late here. You nailed it, it was less about the demon shark and more a commentary on Big Oil. They could have done both and so much better. The script and dialogue were pathetic. I hated most of the characters, and hoped they’d die, except the nice man that rescues the family, of course he gets obliterated… ugh. Love your content. Thank you. ( can’t wait for your Meg 2, it wasn’t as good as the first, but it was good for different reasons even though there are some obvious plot holes. it’s still a fun movie and I loved it.)
PS- you videos are tempting to use as a drinking game, each time you say literally or actually. I counted 7 I think in this one, I might have missed some, though - and no I haven’t been drinking. ;)

I haven't watched the video yet , I wanted to ask you a question before I forget Kristian. I was wondering how a shark would do if it were to go blind . I know about the Greenland sharks going blind , their lives are lived in slow motion though and they are primarily scavengers from what I understand. I'm curious about sharks that live at normal speed and have to hunt for a living for the most part. Let's use a Lemon Shark for example. Could they survive without vision ?

Professional graphic designer here so the shirt does appear to be maroon; however, there are some shots which is does also appear to be burdangy. Burgandy has a purple undertone to it vs maroon which has a brown undertone. I took some screen shots and eyedropperd the shirt multiple times, it seems to change based on not only the lighting but also the saturation or effect they put on the scene. The Mexican standoff it looked maroon, the car ride was burgandy, meanwhile the oil rig where the guy is shooting the flare its maroon again. Now in the scene where they are debating the color of the shirt it is burgandy but we may never know the truth.

Yeah I had the exact same thoughts as you. Bad dialogue, not enough shark, and was just a very meh film; not good enough to be entertaining and not bad enough to be amusing.
Also the fact that Josh Lucas admits to falsifying reports on oil rigs for years despite the fact that he could have easily walked away, and probably done some whistle-blowing in the process, makes him a completely unredeemable character for me. Especially since his supposed redemption involved him sacrificing himself to save his family and not actually dealing with any of the real consequences of his actions.

I know this is a late as hell comment, but ngl I feel like one of the most realistic things about this movie is that a white man with a Mexican wife and two kids with said wife doesn't speak a lick of Spanish... so many people in America and Canada just don't bother to learn a spouse's language in spite of often expecting said spouse to learn English at frankly ridiculous speeds

I refuse to understand why these movies insist on spending time developing their uninteresting characters instead of focusing on the sharks; do they think people watch these films for any other reason but to see a massive shark eat people?

It can work- I think Crawl is a great example of characters-vs-monsters done right (even though it's alligators instead of a shark). But 99.9999% of the time, it ends up being trash like this

Loved your commentary! You pointed out some things I wouldn’t have noticed and the info about the oil was great. Don’t have any interest in seeing the show now, 😂

considering it is a movie about a supernatural demon shark, i was hoping it would be good enough for a rewatch. cause that is a pretty cool setup, but no, its pretty bad.

Open Water coming at some point soon hopefully, and we’ve done the reef, I’m replying while walking at the moment - but if you search Shark Bytes The Reef it should come up!
