While I really liked this book, I don't think it was as good as the first. It may be because when I read the first one I really needed it at the time and it has a special place in my heart. Both books are still amazing though.

i loved this book so much. i loved both of them so much that i don’t think i can really say that i liked one over the other. i’ve never been a reader and i’ve never liked reading but these 2 books have changed my life. i see both books more as just ari. i love ari with my whole heart and so that spreads into my love for each of the books. i related to ari more in the first book, but the second book also gave me lots of hope and both books gave me so much comfort and i felt understood and accepted while learning more and more about ari. i love all of the characters as well ofc. it makes it hard to differ which is my favorite when i just love aristotle mendoza so much.

The sequel was so phenomenal! Yes, we loved the first but actually reading about how Ari and Dante grow and mature as people and as a couple is refreshing. Ari opening up and making so many friends. Their love and intimacy being explored, because we all know sex will happen. I enjoyed the 2nd so much.

Also this book made me cry so much more than the previous one, even though I wish if the first book was just a stand alone, I'm still happy to witness the characters growth. I enjoyed the family dynamics and the healthy relationships they had with their friends more than anything else, and I appreciated the important topics it touched on. The way they dealt with grief was also admirable.

I was surprised to hear that some goodread comments mention a controversy about transphobia in this book. IMO it’s exactly the other way around. First of all, transgenderism was not a thing in the 1980s - not one that teenagers would have ever heard about, and whatever they might have known would have come straight from a heavily heteronormative environment.
Ari totally condemns his brother’s action, going so far as looking up for the murdered transgender to find her grave, where he lays flowers and leaves a letter in which he apologizes for his brother’s action, and renames her Camila (because of course she had been interred as a man). I found that very nice. So… transphobia ???
In any case, while I agree that the first book was slightly better, that’s just because it was so groundbreaking and heartwarming. I don’t think book II is a letdown. It simply follows the progression of Ari and Dante’s relationship. Basicaly book I is about falling in love while book II is about staying in love against all odds - and there are so many.

I enjoyed your video and I agree with a lot of what you said. I always wonder if Ari went to Paris to stay for the whole summer and if that meant that they'll manage to have a long distance relationship or if it was simply a short visit to end things in a proper way ( which is as you said, realistic but also bitter sweet, so bitter actually lol, but yeah it's real), it still bothered me not knowing for sure whether they stayed together or those last pages were their last moments. Dante was definitely dramatic and I hated how he didn't understand why Ari refused to stand in the way of his academic progress, yeah some teens are definitely like that ,but as someone who's still a teen to an extent (19) I feel like I'd appreciate it if my partner was that selfless regardless of whether I actually stayed or went after my future. Seeing Ari's care for him and how he doesn't want to take away such opportunities from him as "not wanting to spend time with him" is very dramatic and it caused an unnecessary scene imo. When Ari said that he doesn't care what happens to him and Dante in the future cause the future isn't theirs, the moment is what they have. That made me wonder if it meant that they're together again and they'll try to stay with each other and they won't fear the future, just focus on what they have right now, or if he was just saying that he'll live and enjoy every moment in Paris knowing that they're ending for good when he leaves, but that won'tstop him for loving Dante in the present , what do you think it meant exactly?

currently in the middle of this one (having read the first one in middle school about 9 years ago. this one is just nottttt good. the writing is horrible imo, the characters cry every 5 seconds and the dialogue is so elementary. 2/5 stars for me
