  • A how-to video on removing oxidation and polishing the gel coat on 2001 Champion 203 Bass Boat. This method will work on any boat with a gel coat finish. REMINDER: You may have to repeat each step more than once as needed to get the look you may be trying to achieve. Below are the products i used and are in the order i use them.
    1. Meguiar's Mirror Glaze: Ultra Cut Compound - Repeat if needed
    2. Meguiar's Mirror Glaze: Show Car Glaze - Repeat if needed
    3. Meguiar's Mirror Glaze: Fine Cut Cleaner - Repeat if needed
    4. Meguiar's Gold Class Carnauba Wax - 3+ coats

    Use the Fine Cut BEFORE the Glaze. Using it afterwards just takes off the glaze you applied. Ultra-Cut then Fine Cut then Polish(Glaze) then Wax

    With that Harbor Fright polisher, keep in mind you don't want to press too hard otherwise it will just vibrate and add to the buffing time. Also, with hard oxidation an orange pad is the way to get a good cut.

    Thank you for sharing this. Looks great.
    Do you care to elaborate why you apply the glaze and then the fine cut and not the other way around?
    Also,I didn't see you working on the area where the Champion sticker was at except for the glass, I'm assuming that if you apply the rest of the compounds the sticker will get damage, is that correct?

      I was able to get more of shine with the fine cut because of the amount of oxidation on the boat. I did apply more glaze off camera though. And yes I did not want to damage the champion decal. I did that area by hand off camera.

    I have a 1990 Cajun. It’s VERY oxidised. I’m 16 so it’s all I could afford lol. Would this work?

    • @CraftOutdoors_est2014
      @CraftOutdoors_est2014  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it will work. You may have to wet sand first to get a lot of the oxidation off depending on how bad it is.

    So did you put the glaze on top of what was already there I didn't see you rub anything off or take anything off between the first coat of stuff and second coat stuff ??

  • @CraftOutdoors_est2014
    @CraftOutdoors_est2014  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just so everyone is clear those swirl marks are from when the owner attempted to wet sand the boat and did it incorrectly!

  • @mmthug

    Good vid but when you apply the cut cleaner you never want to do circles that mars the clear coat.

    Can you do this every year or would it mess the gel coat up?

    • @CraftOutdoors_est2014
      @CraftOutdoors_est2014  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you do it every year, you'll actually not have to do as much, so it shouldn't hurt at all.

    Is that a buffer pad?

    • @codyedwards1473
      @codyedwards1473 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know this is old. Just want to give a couple tips. Go buy you a 200$ dewalt or makita rotary buffer. You’ll get better results in 1/8 of the time... your using a orbital polisher which is why it moves slow and stops when pressure isn’t even.. you need more speed and forced rotation on a boat. Those swirl marks are from you. Not wet sanding. Wet sanding has absolutely no way or creating swirl marks. Your cutting through some of the oxidation but not all and that orbital polisher is just moving the oxidation around making swirls. Hope this helps, post up a vid if you try this.

    How long would this typically last on a boat before having to repeat the process?

    • @CraftOutdoors_est2014
      @CraftOutdoors_est2014  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scott Gary depending on how well you can keep the boat clean, it'll last pretty much all year.

    Car product on a boat? Gel coat is a total different animal than a car finish.

  • @williamriley2528

    The only way to restore gelcoat is to re-spray it...!

    • @stumpbumpers
      @stumpbumpers 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s not “restoring”. Re-spraying is reapplying and would be new gel coat. Restoring is working with the existing gel coat, to bring back the original shine. What a ignorant statement🤣
