I love this especially when Betty (Rosemary Clooney) comes on stage acting like they were doing the number like any other time. That was so good and the look on Bing's face was adorable!!!!
Much of this movie's charm, for me, is how the actors sell their roles throughout. I watch White Christmas at least three dozen times beginning November 1st through the season's final snowfall; even if it is a spring squall.
This number, along with their drag "Sisters", are the high points of the movie for me--and I watch it over and over (just as I did as a kid) every Christmas. There's something to be said for seasonal sentiment!
Don't know much in that era, but it looks like the time when we all looked out for our own and supported when they needed it most. United we Stand, Divided we Fall!
Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemarry Clooney, Vera Ellen... back when "celebrity" meant something. take a good look at 'em. you will never see these types of performers in Hollywood again.
You also make an incredible point. I know it is talking about music, but when I watch these old movies and shows I always think about the song "Who's gonna fill their shoes".
I have watched this film since my grandmother said it was brilliant when I was 10. I always idolised Rosemary Clooney and can see why now I am 47. This film is warm and classy for this time of year.
This is my mom's (and now my) favorite Christmas movie and this is my favorite part! I love the guys' faces when the girls come in. It's so sweet. The song is pretty funny, too.
I used to listen to this when I was in the army. After a tough week with technically no sleep at all Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, Danny Kaye and Vera Ellen would cheer me up. And now... Gee, I wish I was back in the army. It wasn't really bad at all.
A million handsome guys, with longing in their eyes, and all you had to do was pick the age the weight and size OH GEE I wish I was back in the arrrmmyyy
i love the harmonies in the music and the quality of the show!!! you just don't find that kind of thing in today's media anymore. it's kind of tragic :(
I just gotta see this movie again...have it somewhere on VHS...I love it! Bing Crosby is such a fabolous singer and Danny Kaye is...well Danny Kaye! :-D
Its about not knowing what to do with yourself after you leave the Army. The Army supplied clothing, told you when and where to eat, when to sleep, and when and where to discharge your weapon. You didn't have to make any of your own decisions. In "tough civilian life" you have to make all of your own decisions.
if you mean at 0:20, the "up-di-doo hey" after they sing "but after months and months of tough civilian life", it's rock-step, kick-ball-change. It starts at count 5 in the music. With counts - 5-6 (Rock step, right-left), 7-n-8 (kick w/right foot on 7, lend right foot on "n", step forward w/left foot on 8. By weight change is R - L,L (kick/R), R - L (forward). Common jazz steps they all. Go learn swing dancing if you are interested to learn those vernacular jazz steps.
lolz love this movie. when we sang this song in chorus i got picked to march to it and i already knew the song. my favorite part of the movie is "sisters" :D
I love this film, and I don't care, but I will watch it all year round! I just love it, me and my sister, snuggle up and watch it on Christmas eve ever year! Love it!
This is just a wonderfully up-lifting scene from some very talented people in a movie that is a must see each time at Christmas. Thanks for doing this.
I didn't know. You would never know it from the final product, which is where it finally counts. But I'm not so sure about Bing and Rosemary--they kept in touch for years and she was on his final concert tour. He really respected her artistry--he was a very private man and hard to get to know--
if you are in the army then big big ups to you and your fellows. This vid would make anyone join but maybe not in this day. Watch the whole film but with a tissue. Anyway keep your very very good work Love lesley from Margate England
Drpepper is correct. Vera Ellen is dancing next to Danny Kaye (most of the song) and Rosemary Clooney is next to Bing, in the grey slacks and officer's uniform.
When Kaye & Crosby refer to Jolson, Benny, and Hope in the latter-portion of the song, as a kid, I wouldn't've had a clue who they were. I knew who Hope & Benny were but doubt I picked-up on their names when mentioned in the song. Jolson's name would've meant nothing to me at all as a child. It's fun to hear the references to 3 such giants as these now.
Nobody’s walking out on this old fashioned family Christmas. No, NO! We’re all in this together! This a full blown four alarm family emergency here. We’re gonna press on, and we’re gonna have the hap-hap-HAPPIEST Christmas since Bing Crosby tap danced with Danny FUCKIN Kaye!
I _could_ watch it year 'round too but for me that would remove some of the specialty of this fine movie. As it is I do watch White Christmas from November 1st on until the final snowfall of the season; even if it's a spring squall in April. That happened this year, April 2019. By the time the movie was over the snow had stopped around 4 PM and there was a fresh coating of snow on everything that sparked like diamonds. A week later I was cutting the grass.
Interesting note...I have the score, and it lists the original lyrics by Irving Berlin as "Crosby, Hope and Jolson all for free." I'm sure it was a funny situation for Bing -- singing, as a character, about himself! Not surprising that they switched out his name for Jack Benny's.
Anyone know the name of the dance they do when they sing, "but after months and months of tough civilian life"? I can never seem to get those steps right!!
One wonders if the part that Danny Kaye played was done by the one that the studio had picked but Donald O'Connor got Mule Flu from being with that Mule so much .
If I was old enough I would love to get back in the Army
I love this especially when Betty (Rosemary Clooney) comes on stage acting like they were doing the number like any other time. That was so good and the look on Bing's face was adorable!!!!
Much of this movie's charm, for me, is how the actors sell their roles throughout. I watch White Christmas at least three dozen times beginning November 1st through the season's final snowfall; even if it is a spring squall.
I served in the Army in 1974-1978 and I also served in the New Jersey Army National Guard and I also served in the Air National Guard
Love Bing Crosby. What a great friendship Bing and Rosemary had.
This number, along with their drag "Sisters", are the high points of the movie for me--and I watch it over and over (just as I did as a kid) every Christmas. There's something to be said for seasonal sentiment!
Super film, great great cast, they don't make them like this anymore.
Don't know much in that era, but it looks like the time when we all looked out for our own and supported when they needed it most. United we Stand, Divided we Fall!
Keep dreaming, they were racist as fuck in that era. Love the movies and music but I would never want to live in that era.
Delightful. Love the expression on Bing's face when he realizes His Girl Has Returned.
Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemarry Clooney, Vera Ellen... back when "celebrity" meant something. take a good look at 'em. you will never see these types of performers in Hollywood again.
Your profile picture is great.
You also make an incredible point. I know it is talking about music, but when I watch these old movies and shows I always think about the song "Who's gonna fill their shoes".

I love listing to this song
This is my mom's (and now my) favorite Christmas movie and this is my favorite part! I love the guys' faces when the girls come in. It's so sweet. The song is pretty funny, too.
The look on Bing's face when Rosemary comes on stage..he's like sea back!!! This is my all time favorite movie!!!!
I used to listen to this when I was in the army. After a tough week with technically no sleep at all Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, Danny Kaye and Vera Ellen would cheer me up. And now... Gee, I wish I was back in the army. It wasn't really bad at all.
This song gets stuck in my head EVERY single time I watch this movie. Not that I'm complaining. Haha.
I rember when I was in the Army and and I was station at Fort McNair and I was also station at Fort Belvoir
"A million handsome guys, with longing in their eyes and all you had to do was pick the age, the weight, the size!
I could watch this stuff ALL day
Merry Christmas 2021!🎄🎄🎅🎅🎁🎁
A million handsome guys, with longing in their eyes, and all you had to do was pick the age the weight and size OH GEE
I wish I was back in the arrrmmyyy
This was real performance
My dad and aunt loved this movie when they were kids, now me and my brother love it too. :)
i love the harmonies in the music and the quality of the show!!! you just don't find that kind of thing in today's media anymore. it's kind of tragic :(
Haha, whenever my mom has a busy day where she is cleaning and making beds, she would sing this song. Made my day
I will be singing this song in my head the rest of the month!
I just gotta see this movie again...have it somewhere on VHS...I love it! Bing Crosby is such a fabolous singer and Danny Kaye is...well Danny Kaye! :-D
I love the girls verse. I always sing it whenever I hear someone say something about the Army :)
I love the way Danny Kaye holds Rosemary Clooney's hand at 1:31. So cute !!!
Its about not knowing what to do with yourself after you leave the Army. The Army supplied clothing, told you when and where to eat, when to sleep, and when and where to discharge your weapon. You didn't have to make any of your own decisions. In "tough civilian life" you have to make all of your own decisions.
This looks like it was a very fun scene to film. It's funny and cheerful and silly but silly in a good way.

I love watching this movie
Dancing cheek to cheek and pants to pants!
Grandpa Melvin Frank(Producer and director) worked with actors Danny Kaye and Bing Crosby-- So cool seeing these vids
This is just a wonderfully up-lifting scene from some very talented people in a movie that is a must see each time at Christmas. Thanks for doing this.
Ich liiiiebe diesen Weihnachtsfilm. White Christmas..
Wundervolle Schauspieler❤
I finally caught up with the times and bought a large, flat screen TV. It made this movie even better ! Merry Christmas !
I didn't know. You would never know it from the final product, which is where it finally counts. But I'm not so sure about Bing and Rosemary--they kept in touch for years and she was on his final concert tour. He really respected her artistry--he was a very private man and hard to get to know--

I can't choose my favorite song/scene from this movie! They're all so fun and good!
I'm a huge Danny Kaye fan! :-)
real talent, unlike people today
Haha! Same here. After watching the movie before going to bed, I wake up in the morning singing this is my head. I'm not complaining either. : )

My favorite actor. Can't get most of his films now.
yes--he must have been great fun to make a movie with!!
Drpepper is correct. Vera Ellen is dancing next to Danny Kaye (most of the song) and Rosemary Clooney is next to Bing, in the grey slacks and officer's uniform.
I’ve been in the military reserves for almost twenty years, so I guess it’s alright!

Jack )

All around was the star of the whole show.

Rosemary Clooney is pretty much life

The happiest Christmas since bing Crosby tap danced with Danny fucking Kaye
I wish we had girls that looked like that when I was in the Army.
YOU SHALL NOT PASS!
My thoughts after I got out... 😂
Don't forget Rosemary Clooney and Vera Ellen.
Remember, Tom "Thumb" 👍
And,

they should use this for army recruitment lol
the one person who disliked this is obviously mental.
@bexbeckyxx - True! How different the movie would have been with Donald O'Connor! Not better, but so different.
Thumbs up if Clark Griswold brought you here.
Full movie Hans cristian anderson
SINCE BING CROSBY TAPPED DANCE WITH DANNY FUCKIN' K.
Are you sure that one of the girls isn't Doris Day? That's who I thought I saw. I could be wrong though. hehe
One wonders if the part that Danny Kaye played was done by the one that the studio had picked but Donald O'Connor got Mule Flu from being with that Mule so much .
