Subaru 2016 Outback sunroof leak fix

  • Not difficult to clean out the forward drain lines that start inside the sunroof subframe. There appears to be no access to the other end (the drain line outlets) which may block up too. Hence a long wire or trimmer line is good, and then a short blast of air to clear any rubbish out. Good to test afterwards with a little water in the top to see that it is all cleared or not. Main thing is to keep the sunroof shut when parked under trees etc to minimize the build up of crap in the first place. Not a bad idea either to check the drains regularly. Nothing worse that a carpet soaked floor that could take weeks to dry out!!

    Thank you for this video. I had the same problem with my 2019 Outback. Passenger side drain was clogged. I also thought it could be the windshield since it had been replaced about one year ago. Glad it was a simple fix.

    Great video…the trimmer line didnt work for me, but I was able to move the aft part of the fender liner out of the way and get a few light bursts of air into the outlet. Worked like a charm and now drains freely. Thanks for the help!
    edit: the outlet on my 2014 Outback is a white plastic rectangle fitting in the sheet metal on the back part of the fender-well, sits vertically

    My 2010 sunroof leaks like a seive since about 1 year old or less. Dealer supposedly clears with air hose, and denies that there is a problem, but this process is really ineffective. I have had several cars before this with sunroofs and never a problem. This series of vehicles seem to be very prone to this problem.

      Yes it is a common problem. The dealer may not have removed the wheel arch lining where the front drains come out. There may be a build up of water there from tree leaves etc. Try parking the car with it facing uphill and run some water over the entire sunroof for a minute or two. Check for any leaking. If not then face it down hill and do the same. Sometimes the leakage won't be as evident on the flat. You could also try running electrical tape around the closed sunroof rubber seal all the way around and then wash the car or run the hose all over the roof. Leave it for 20minutes and then check for leaks again. I know one customer did this and there was still water coming in, which suggests it was coming from somewhere else... Eg along the top of the door window seals or down the A pillar beside the windscreen.

      It’s a defective design. Subaru’s aren’t meant for the outdoors. It’s false advertising. They require heated garages and to be cleaned immediately after use. “Share the leak” should be the motto, not “share the love.”

    the end of the drain line is all the way down in the fender under the black plastic liner.

    Best thing to do use take a shop vaccume and suck the crud out instead of shoving it farther down the tube. There are rubber tubes in the A-pillar that can come lose if you shove something down it, and they can leak inside the A-pillar if disconnected.

      Sure. That's another method.

    Loved the video JMY - Thank you very much. I have a 2016 Outback. The sunroof rattles a fair bit on uneven surface and leaks only slightly. I would love to replace the seal around the glass but cannot find any information on how to go about fixing it (specifically my model). Are you able to point me in the right direction where I can find such info about how to go about it? Cheers

    2013 Outback with this problem. I can get about 5 feet of trimmer line down each side before it stops. Any idea as to how far I have to go to clear it? “Farther”, I guess.

    • @jmy6050
      @jmy6050  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nope that should do it. Test with water. Maybe some low air pressure if still blocked.

  • @firebir11

    No Air hose....use small wet vac .....otherwise you risk blowing out the drain line.

    I can only get about 400-500mm down both front drains using nylon 2mm whipper snipper line. Same going up from the bottom. Should I be able to get it to come all the way out at the other end?

    • @jmy6050
      @jmy6050  ปีที่แล้ว

      Run some water down the drains to see if it is freely flowing out the bottom. Your snipper line may be running into a natural bend in the drain line. Let me know what you find.
