This recording, put together by collecting material filmed during ordinary classes at Bunbukan Dojo, represents a unique occasion to learn from Nishioka Tsuneo Sensei some of the fundamental elements of the methods (gijutsu), tradition (densho) and spirit (seishin) characteristic of Shinto Muso-ryu. I like it when at around 3:50 he admits he has no idea why the uchidachi turns the blade. Sometimes I get the feeling that many sensei pretend to be all-knowing and if some information has been lost they try to come up with their own explanation. I really respect if a Japanese sensei has the guts to say "I don't know".

@Addokichi I couldn't agree more about the humility issue. For reference, the reason is you've lost your balance and you are now going to threaten the neck. When scooped properly the tachi goes horizontal, and the neck is the next logical target. This is the Fukuoka perspective...

Yes, it is not common to find that in a teacher, but he of course has some ideas. At about 4:20 he gives a possible explanation as to why... It's not subtitled in the preview but one possibility is that if Uchidachi doesn't turn the blade then Shidachi could lock the sword and throw it over his head.
