    Year back i started Kenpo but life got in the way. I’m retired now and hope this TH-cam course will help me start from the beginning until I learn what I need to learn. Thanks for the training. Note: hopefully, this training will complement my Judo Brown Belt. Thanks again.

    Thank you!!!!. I am a new Dojo Mom and have NO clue what my 6 year old is talking about when he comes home from class, he is so excited and wanting to share his new techniques and positions. By Explaining the terms and stances you have helped me to understand what he is learning and given me the ability to help him practice!!

    Amazing instruction to the reason of KENPO.
    I am Bob, my instructor is a Guy you all know- PAUL OBRAY.
    This is a very basic understanding of how KENPO is taught, however it is very well instructed.
    Basic moves and with the basics shown here , you can defend yourself.
    I want more of this.
    Makes the white belt understand yet the brown or Black belt remember why!
    Epic and very well done , thank you !

    Great video Sifu. I haven't studied Kenpo since the late 80's mainly under Mr. Bob Lyles tutelage. I was honored to be parts numerous seminars by Professor Parker, Tatum, Sepulveda, Potts and others. Now at 55, I am feeling the need to get back into American Kenpo. You inspired me even more.

  • @AJRprods

    The fist formation is an old Karate style thumb positioning, but has since evolved to having the thumb curled in over the forefinger of the index. This evolved version which since has been long implemented is what Senior Grandmaster Ed Parker used in Father art of American Kenpo.
    It would be acceptable to say that this version of Kenpo with 'American Kenpo derivative' uses this thumb position, but to say it is the be-all way would be misrepresenting Kenpo's original (and still in use) fist formulation. In addition, it would be misinforming viewers who are curious about the art. Also, it makes Kenpo art as a whole more susceptible to uncredibility, critique, and skepticism if viewers constantly find inconsistencies in holders of the art across many different variances.
    Watching any videos of Ed Parker--aside from his early footage beginning in his progression in spreading American Karate before establishing his completed system of American Kenpo--you will not find him formulating his fist in this way or in the teaching of any of the techniques, block, forms, or sets.
    As I understand and DO believe we all intend for the viewers to be spread the love and beauty of the art in the same way it was shown to us... I would like it to be apparent that we must be more cognizant of Kenpo origin and separate our personal system's interpretations from the original principles. This way we may educate the public of Kenpo's constant evolution and many variances, practical ones at that as well.
    This can be accepted, since we practitioners commonly know, Mr. Parker always said Kenpo must always be evolving. I hope my comment comes off less as like hate mail as it does a proposed positive critique... We can hopefully both agree our goals are in alignment to educate students about the wonders and glory of the form we are so passionate about.

      Are you a black belt it's a good question because he is an 8th degree and maybe I missed it I didn't hear him say it's the beyond pissed I heard him say for him it gives him more power more support and trying it myself I tend to agree it's awkward but it's definitely more support and a lot of people wind up in a fight with broken fingers for punching

  • @codydagutis4431
    @codydagutis4431 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Just because I'm curious...I took Kenpo growing up and we were taught that punching with your thumb on the top like you suggest is the absolute best way to break your thumb which I have seen happen during sparring matches. Can you expand on your thought process behind this?

    • @tedthornton7791
      @tedthornton7791 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I took Chinese Kenpo n obtained black belt in early 80s. We taught tuck in the thumb also. If sticking out itll get caught by a kick, punch, or otherwise snagged and broken. The partial open and or bent fingers , seen in alota movies, was also prohibited. Due to getting broken.

    • @Docinaplane
      @Docinaplane 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Think how with the thumb on top when you punch palm up you will not catch and break your thumb as easily on body punches. The weakest fist is with the thumb over the middle finger. If it is only partially on the first finger, it's still strong because it compresses all the hand and wrist bones together. It's not a big difference visually, but it can keep you from breaking your hand. If you train with gloves all the time, it's also a good idea to do some bare-knuckle practice on a bag because large gloves prevent proper fists.

  • @CharlesHepburn2
    @CharlesHepburn2 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is there any scientific evidence you can reference for your claim that the “unbreakable fist” technique, with your thumb aligned as instructed, makes your wrist more resilient to hyper-flexing? I’m skeptical that a very minor change in thumb alignment (as instructed) would make a significant improvement on wrist strength while striking… and I’m not looking for anecdotal evidence or explanations. Thank you.

    Hahahaha... that 'salute' (12:08) is BS; it reminds me of one of those ridiculous team poses in Dragon Ball or the transformation sequence in Sailor Moon. Take it from this old guy; here are the rules. There is no slapping of the hands on the sides (by the thighs), there is a simple bow before entering and at exiting the dojo. A simple bow, looking at the floor, to the sensei (it shows trust and respect), unless the sensei is sparring with you, in which case one would bow while looking at the sensei. A simple vow looking at the person during practice and to people who are not known to you, looking at the floor to your friends (people who you trust). That is it!

      Those bows he is teaching is that Kenpo style bow required by his style in thier schools and thier fella styles competions and expeditions against each other. I am a older Chinese Kenpo student from late 70s early 80s and the bows are not BS. In public kata , expeditions, demos, or kumite competitions by various styles/associations competing a simple bow with or without hands slapping sides may be allowed. Each opposing style usually , as a habit, do not refer to each others way of practicing a bow, technique, or teaching as b s . My sensei wouldnt have tolerated his students doing it then. No martial art is a waste of time, but I understand your point, most of the stuff here is far too complicated or unrealistic to pull off in the street, personally I think krav maga is the best for self defence in the street and to truly be a bad ass then the best to train in would be mma,there are some useful techniques in this though..
