Thank you for sharing the comparison. I don't have either in my collection but it is a beautiful deck. I think the chocolate borders of the indie really complement the art and make it pop compared to the white borders. It's nice that the mass market version comes with a chunky book - always a plus. Thank you 🙂
Why they chose white borders for vintage card images instead of the darker brown is perplexing to me. I collect cabinet cards & purchased a few lots on eBay and I can state that most-if any really-don’t have crisp white borders. It’s nothing a little modding with vintage photo distress ink can’t fix but the gold gilding…I loved it in the past but I’m getting a bit over it, plus I don’t think it flows well. The imagery is gorgeous though and it’s a nice little change up, so points for that also. Great video! Love the editing
Thank You for the comparison. I love this deck. I appreciate the mass market edition more. It is on way to me. This will be the first collage type deck. I am waiting it impatiently. Ps: The deck has arrived, and I love it. I am a beginner, but this is my favorite deck now. I love the borders and the back of the mass market edition. And the whole deck indeed.
I like the chocolate border best, but I agree some cards are more flattered by the cream border. The influence of Halloween is making me grin at your stone in the bowl with a bun and a big grin. She is happy to see the stone across the way. lol 33:14
So Halloween 🎃 is making you punchy, is it, Dana? It is a time for deep reflection and….some giggles 🤭! You know what would have been awesome? If they put some antique bronze in the printed motif and edges!
This is such a gorgeous deck and I was all set to get the mass market-- but , as a queer woman, I was so, so excited for the two female presenting figures in the two of cups and I am definitely disappointed by the choice to keep the straight couple in the mass market. I also prefer the moon card you had chosen in the indie, and prefer the chocolate borders and edging as well, though that wouldn't be a deal breaker. I don't know. I'll let it sit on my wish list for a while and think about it. I know more decks are starting to be queer friendly but not so many are that losing one doesn't hurt me a bit. You know that video about representation you put up? Well...I am white, but I'm also queer, living with disability, and fat bodied. So some part of myself being in there mattered. But it is so, so lovely. So lovely. I am going to be patient with myself. Thank you so much for your video, as always
Bethany, I hear you. It’s pure speculation here, but from what I’ve heard, once a creator signs on the dotted line with a mass market publisher, they have little or no say in the production of the deck. You basically hand your child over and hope for the best. Case in point: The card stock in the mass market Antique Anatomy deck. It was very interesting hearing Claire Goodchild talk about her experience on the Wildly Tarot Podcast. Thank goodness the publishers listened to the complaints and upgraded the card stock. I’m speculating again, but I don’t think I’m too off the mark when I say that if she had her way, Carrie would have wanted to include all of the extra cards in the mm deck. I don’t know if the decision to not include them was a cost thing, but at least there are 3 options for the Lovers card. I believe that the addition of all those card options in the original indie deck was truly groundbreaking. The option to customize the deck for yourself and then again for anyone else you may read for was truly unique. Mass Market publishers are definitely being called to up the ante by the excellence of indie decks. We’ve seen it mostly in the upgraded production values. More slow in coming is representation. Hopefully, that will pick up speed. Thank you, Bethany for sharing your experience and thoughts. You definitely should choose to bring a deck into your life that will be a joy for you to work with and that enhances the reading experience for you!
Can't wait to watch this! Will probably watch it here shortly while I feed & water all the tarantulas, which usually takes between 1.5 to 2 hours 🙄 Anywho, watched a random walk through of this deck that came up on my feed last week, ordered it immediately. Least contemplated deck purchase in a while. Lol. Just something about it. The book was one of the things I was really looking fwd too. Love the deck, don't regret getting it one bit. 🧡
Omg! That’s quite a time commitment to feed your tarantulas! I think it’s awesome and so rewarding to care for creatures of our natural world. This deck is a treasured workhorse for me. I’m tickled that you felt compelled to bring the deck into your life!
@@oldsoulmermaid1543 lol. I take my critter care very seriously, probably ocd level on the tarantulas. Some of them are still really small so they require a little more monitoring and upkeep. I have about 27 I think, comprised of 23 different species. Once I got more than a few I could see why it was called a hobby. Lol. Can be a lot of work it someone does it right.
The book does not go into who the photos are of or where they came from. I do know that there are a number of historical figures in the deck and I point a number of them out in my original unboxing of the indie deck. You can see that video here: th-cam.com/video/SejSBbJePwI/w-d-xo.html. Some of those featured are Harriet Tubman, George Armstrong Custer, Theda Bara, Nicholas II and Alexandra…the last Tsar and Tsarina of Russia. I believe all of these photos can be obtained in the public domain or some other avenue like The Library of Congress…but I’m speculating. Her Spirit Oracle that I featured in the video contains some family photos sent to her from backers of the original Kickstarter deck. I hope this helps! You could message Carrie on Instagram and I’m sure she would respond 😁.
I prefer borderless but, between these I like the cream better. At least this would be a great one for you mod. Since you don't like the guilding, the larger size, and that it would look good borderless....trimming it and doing an inked distressed edging would be amazing. Would also make it more of a manageable size for you. 🧡 Too bad they didn't include the alternate cards in the mm, I liked all the ones in the indie version better. I think another good oracle to pair it with would be Divine Muses Oracle 🤔
I’m sure the creator would have loved to include all the extra cards, but I’ve heard once a deck is signed to a mass market publisher, the creator has little or no say about the production. It is very nice to have all those extra cards because you can customize the deck for yourself and then again if you read for other people. I think the indie version was truly groundbreaking in that sense. Sadly, I don’t trust myself with a paper trimmer 😆. I think I will wait until the gilding naturally sloughs off with use and time and then use some distress ink on the edges! Oh…I love your suggestion of using the Divine Muses Oracle with this deck. That would be a perfect fit for this version of this deck! I wish I had through this of it 😉
Hi, Bonnie! I love your channel! Love your reviews and deck comparisons. I got a reply from Carrie regarding the oracle deck to go along with the RT. Here's what she said, "There is talk of producing a new version of the Spirit Oracle though nothing of the first edition of the RT. I would love to see both sold together, but the deck is now in the hands of a publisher so I'm limited on what I can do. For now, I am pushing for a new Spirit Oracle to complement the Weiser edition of the RT." I regret the fact that I did not purchase the indie version. I had been fairly new to tarot at that time. I would love to have this one-of-a-kind version. Thank you for your honest opinions and deep walk-throughs. Oh, your choice of music is amazing too!
Oh, Irene…thank you so much for the information! It would be wonderful to have a Spirit Oracle deck that complemented this version of the Relative Tarot! In the meantime, there are 2 Oracle decks I think would work beautifully: the Divine Muses Oracle by Maree Bento and the Vintage Wisdom Oracle by Victoria Mosely. When I backed the original Kickstarter Relative Tarot deck, I too was very early on in my work with the Tarot! I wasn’t sure if I would be able to read with it, but the concept and images really spoke to me. I’m glad you enjoyed the music. I really enjoy trying to find the right selections to set the mood and tone!
@@oldsoulmermaid1543 thank you ! Will definitely do the suggested pairings. Two of my tarot study groups decided to study ancestry with help of the book Ancestral Tarot by Nancy Hendrickson. I immediately thought of the Relative Tarot as the best companion in our studies. Great book for the RT!
Who's oeaking underneath? I love it! I've never seen rwvuews on this deck and wondwred about ut. Personally I love the brown natte. Its different and leas distracting.. Thanjs for sharing. Samhain blessings to you. I agree. Tea stain for sure. I'm over guilding too. To me its a cheap way to finish a deck to attract customers, like an all purpose slap it on. "We've got gold edgibg!" But didn't take time to do somethibg creatuve to fit the deck's arsthetic!
Thank you! You know, I asked myself if I would buy this deck if I had not known about the original and the answer is that I definitely would! Though the indie version was truly groundbreaking with all that it offered. I really do think this edition stand up straight on its own and is beautiful in its own right. At least now it is available to everyone who wants a copy and that’s a good thing 😉!
There is a time stamp in the video for the unboxing of the mass market deck and I measure the card up with a standard RWS card…it is slightly larger than standard tarot size.
I ordered the Indie deck.It came with a flawed card. It took about 8 months for a response and then I was sent the wrong card!! Think that I will pick up the MM too.
Oh, yes…the 10 of pentacles was labeled the 10 of Wands! I did get the right card, by yes it did take a long time. Did you reach out to Carrie about the mistake?
How frustrating. Sounds like an issue I'm having with a HP deck from the UK. One of the most expensive decks I've bought, about $100. Had 2 flawed cards when I got it, minor flaws that I usually wouldn't bother with but with that kind of price tag I contacted them. They said they would send the replacements right away....that was over a month ago 🙄. It only took 2 weeks for the deck itself to get here so pretty sure they didn't bother sending them.
I don't have neither of those but I'd say that I prefer the indie version. One of the cards I always look is the Death card so I prefer the Indie version in that way (a lot of alternatives on the indie are a lot of better options to choose than the mass market), such a let down... I'd loved to have this one but I will pass on both versions because my wallet is waiting for other decks, hahahaha. The mass market seems to be a little brighter (I don't know if it's the effect of the white borders) and I like the below writing better in the mass market in the minors, it's less distractive for my eyes. At least the mass market had the alternative options for the Lovers Card, I appreciate that. Overall, asides the variant options... Indie version is better. It has a better more vintage feeling to it with that color of the borders, otherwise I'd paint the borders, maybe a little bit, of the mass market with coffee liquid 🤣. Borders and backs... Indie is better.
You know, I think it would have been awesome if they brought out more antique bronze in the borders and edged the deck in a darker antique bronze! Yes, having all those choices in the indie deck is really rare and wonderful. Also…I know how hard it is to make choices as to which decks to buy. So many wonderful choices!
Me too! In the meantime, I think I will pair it with Maree Bento’s Divine Muses Oracle and the Vintage Wisdom Oracle by Virginia Moseley. I think those two would work great!
Oh, yes…those chocolate borders and edges are a delight! I wish that they would have edged this deck in an antiqued bronze. But…then again…that would be an indie feature!
How many famous historical figures did you recognize in this deck?
Marie Curie, Harry Houdini, Tsar Nicholas II. perhaps. Sitting Bull Chief
Thank you for sharing the comparison. I don't have either in my collection but it is a beautiful deck.
