Your old school man. I love how you seem to enjoy working and completing a task or repair with pride. Your a dying breed! Unless it's a simple Holley or edelbrock/Carter AFB. I usually forget something every darn time and have to go back once or twice if it's a carb I dont do very often. Like the little ball bearing with spring etc.
The carburetor lesson was actually very informative. To the point and explaining how it does what it does and why it does what it does. EDIT: I used to think I wanted a flock of chickens with a rooster. After this video, if I had a rooster, I would turn him into soup after a day of crowing like that.
Hardly anybody works on old stuff anymore, let alone the factory carburetor. Looking forward to seeing you sort the rest of the fuel system. Thanks for sharing!
OMG, this is the greatest tutorial I have ever seen. I don't know what profession you chose in life, but i really hope it was a shop teacher. Many people know the ins and outs of a carb, but few have the patience, vocabulary, and delivery that you do. Add in the random cow mooing, rooster crowing, and your commentary, and you have internet gold. Your bent screwdriver is a bonus!
On the 2100 and 4100 carbs I have run into warped power valve and accelerator pump covers. They should be checked before installing as they will cause havoc when trying to get the engine to run smoothly. Tidbit: the early 300, 240 and 302 heads are notorious for have excessively worn random valve guides that will create a miss and vacuum leak. Great job on the video
MATHING...... As I was typing, you explained how I did the figuring out near what adjustment it was going to be. I just added the 1 more 32nd which ended up being 32/6th same as a half. So 1/32 less than 1/2. Exellent teaching.
Rebuilt so many of these on fords and amc. The trick was getting them to work in cold weather that they didn’t stall out when dropping them in gear. Took some fine tuning with very very small drill bits.
Jeff, new sub here. I really enjoy your videos and narration. It is so satisfying to see these old relics brought back from the dead. You are so the man! Regards, Billy
I used to have a set of jet installation wrenches that held the jet to the wrench when you put them in. I can't remember if they were Mac, Proto or Snap On. Lost or stolen years ago. Lots of memories of carburetor rebuilds I did over the years. I was the shop "Carburetor Guru," back in the day. 31/64" is just a tad under a half inch. :D
When I worked at the Chevy dealer, they'd always send me the Chevettes. I used to drive into the bay, singing "I love a Chevette" to the tune of "I Love A Parade".
@@ElderlyIron I was a tad earlier than that. Working on Early to late 60's cars at various dealerships. I was happy to stay at one, but the owner kept moving me around. Scared the heck out of me each time. I would arrive at work to find my tool chest outside of the bay, only to find out I was to go to another dealership the guy owned. Got to work on everything from Ramblers to Mercedes Benz. The Last my favorite because same work, but twice the commission pay. (Back then $20 per hour labor of Domestic and $40 per hour for foreign cars.) The few times I got to work on Japanese cars, I hated them. They had the most complicated and hard to adjust carburetors I ever saw. Made the Rochester 4 Barrel carbs look simple.
Excellent tutorial on carb theory, and a nice job on the rebuild as well. This sort of thing is a great video for young guys just getting into the hobby and have an interest in carburetion and old engines. Happy New Year, looking forward to more great Elderly Iron in 2020. Hey Jeff you working on tat old autolite 2100 is like old home week for me, I know you blew out all the passages with air first, obw use to be able to buy Berryman in 5 gal cans .
Adam's got a lot two2 do with carburetors with all this adamaztion stuff. Pressure differential sucks I mean pushes the fuel out. Air, fuel, whatever it all mixes together down in the stomach or manifold. Nose, mouth, larynx , diaphragm. If your the federal mechanic show us your venturis. Venturis? Venturis? We don't need no sucking venturis. Oops I mean pressure differential venturis. Good video Jeff.
Great video! One question - wouldn't that selection on the accelerator pump be the most aggressive ie squirt the most fuel? I thought the accelerator pump was mechanical connection not vacuum?
Jeff Use a drill bit guage for 64th measures great help , PS Did you happen to check the butterfly loop anvil in the middle of the venturi horns for play Most Motocraft carbs have a horrible loosness from hammering on the peddle the linkage stops but the force spreads the loop anvil dead center of the metering shaft so far there`s incredible play you can loose 1/8 movement .I have mega carbs here like these I can show you or anyone if you`d like .
I don't know if we can get that carby cleaner stuff here Oz or an equivalent but it sure did a nice job. Should work like a charm now. No rooster today ?
@@mescko Damn it, you're right. Got used to that rooster interrupting every sentence followed the the cow mooing. But I didn't hear the rooster in this one, I thought maybe they'd had him over for dinner.
Acttually when the throttle plates open the vacuum moves up to the ventures drawing out the fuel with some air. There is manafold vacuum and venture vacuum. Venture vacuum is where the vacuum advance is usually connected.
My girlfriend left town for a few days, she walked in early and saw me rebuilding a carb on the coffee table. She said why are you rebuilding a carb in the house, none of our cars use carbs anymore.I said it's Jeff's fault, he showed me how to do it, now I need to find a car for it.
I didn’t think a 68 carb had the ledges on PV cover for idle mixture screw limiter caps. Is 68 the first year? The bowl vent levers do have that bend on most.
I did catch the gasket error but you didn’t hear me ! I think that fuel/air metering devise isn’t there best by far ! But Ford never had a great one in my opinion ! I believe that’s why those 390’s sucked so much fuel . Of course it’s just my opinion !

Wish I had a nickel for each carb I rebuilt since 1968 to present , I would be a few dollars shy of being a Bill Gates. Only since 2000 they have been small engine carb's.
My dad taught me to always start all screws before tightening. Good lesson to learn!

@ 10:43 I did. Also noticed the PV cover is backward. Since you don't have the mixture limiting caps it does not matter.
Another fine instructional video of classic restoration.👍👍😀🏁

After the carb information you gave to us I was afraid you were going to say, Get ready for your test!! Great video!

your carburetor operation description is exactly correct. vacuum enrichment(power valve) operates on intake manifold vacuum.
My first carb rebuild a few months ago was the 2100. Love doing it.
Here in the Owyhees, we have a couple good pick'n'pull yards.
Good video and info Jeff , have not worked on one of them carbs in a long time.
I like your videos and I like you as a good cuz you're a good person thank you for sharing what you do
Well well well, carburettor jets etc.. cleaned the old fashioned way.👍🙌

The orange stopper you refer to is called an elastomer valve.
I don't know how those motorcraft two barrels work either but they work. Had one on my Jeep before I upgraded to a four barrel.

Jeff did you replace the spring clip on the float after adjusting the float level?
Next time you have a bigger than the can level issue...place a couple of rags over the piece to wick the cleaner over the part...
Good thought

now that i got carbs figured out, the butt faces switched to fuel injection, Dang!

Can you use never cease on the screw threads?
No need to, really.

Bowl vent lever bend is stock! I cringed when you ''tweaked'' it! Did my first Quadra Jet at 14.......Mikuni and Keihin at 10!
Hey ,what about the ID tag .
you should just make a road trip and build the one on that 78 , I hate the motorcraft 4bbls LOL
shorter lever position on accelerator pump arm is MORE fuel.

Use a drill bit of the correct size as a gauge.
