    Things like this are why game preservation is so important. Companies don't want us to retain the culture of the games they themselves made. I'm glad that the modern internet realized that and started working against it.

    There is a Carbon Cabinet (I do not know however if it is GT Cabinet that got Upgraded or a Dedicated Carbon, sorry) down in Dorset, but its nearly dead I am afraid, the Manual Shifter has packed up completely on the Left Side Cabinet and the Right Side Cabinet is Dead Dead, so that could be one for the Scrapheap soon, I had no Idea Global VR's Arcade Cabinets were so cheap and nasty and were basically just cut down PC Games running on a Cheap and badly made PC! There used to be an NFS GT Cabinet up in Lancashire, but that was some years ago now so I doubt it still works. There was also an Underground Cabinet in Yorkshire that I remember from a few years ago, don't know if it still works however.

    • @robthemodYT
      @robthemodYT 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I am almost certain that Ferrybridge Services had a NFS GT cabinet in the 2000's, as did the Hollywood Bowling alley in Stockton. One of the arcades in Redcar had Underground (and also Thrill Drive 3 which played in English but the cabinet was Japanese - it seems Konami trialled a english version of game in the UK) but those are both long gone. The funfair in South Shields also had a Underground machine that still worked last time I went there (but that was before COVID) and even then the force feedback in player 2's wheel was broken. One arcade in Scarborough had Carbon and also GRID.

    • @simeonyves5940
      @simeonyves5940 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@robthemodYT The last Time I was in the Arcade with GRiD in Scarborough (which was pre Lurgi) the NFS Cabinet was an Underground Game, sounds like it has been upgraded to Carbon Since. Never been to South Shields, Stockton or Redcar, I have only really been to Scarborough on Holidays, I did go to York once on a City Break, but I did not Enjoy York much, I am more Familiar with Lancashire (Fylde, the whole Lytham Saint Annes to Fleetwood stretch!), Dorset and Hampshire as I have been to those counties a lot more often.
      Sadly, the Global VR Cabinets use a Cheap Belt Driven Force Feedback System on the wheel, and as we know the Drive Belts are forever coming off the Pully or Snapping in Twain on those wheels, Geared and Direct Drive are better, but Probably a bit too expensive for an Arcade Cabinet...I don't know though, Midway used to use the Latest 3DFX Voodoo Chips in their Games back in the 1990's and the Voodoo was a very Expensive Piece of Kit, I know, I used to have one! Yup, I am getting on a bit for a Gamer!
      I have never seen a Thrill Drive 3 Cabinet, but there used to be a Thrill Drive 1 in Mr. J's in Blackpool (IIRC it got moved to North Pier after a while) and a Thrill Drive 2 in the Big Indoor Market on the Corner near what used to be the Big Woolworths, so Konami did indeed bring Thrill Drive to the UK (IIRC it was a massive Inspiration for the original "Burnout", I have still got the PS2 Version of that one... Point of Impact and Paradise were best however IMO) but this is going back nearly 20 years ago so I imagine they are long gone as Thrill Drive is supposed to be a very Rare Game indeed now!
      It is a Shame just how many of the Old Cabinets we grew up Playing are gone, either Scrapped or Upgraded into other Games, still, there are People out there who Restore, Rebuild and preserve old Cabinets (Heard about the Guys doing the worlds only Surviving "Ridge Racer: Full Scale" Unit which got Recovered from Blackpool Pleasure Beach? that Mk1 MX5 at the Core of the Unit being a JDM Eunos is going to make parts hard to find, as sadly, the Car is a bit of a Wreck :( still, the Game itself is booting and Running on the Original PCB's now they have gotten the Damp out of them and done some soldering!) , Sega Cabinets are said to be the Easiest to Restore as they built their Cabinets Tough and there is a huge stock of NOS Parts for them, but hopefully someone will take the Plunge and Save, Preserve and Restore some of the old Global VR NFS GT/Underground/Carbon Cabinets, as, well, as Cheap and as Nasty as the Global VR Cabinets are, they sure are Great Fun to Play when they are working Properly!

    I remember seeing a twincab of this in an arcade in Seaside, Oregon back in high school. Funnily enough, the time share we were staying at had an Underground cab in it, but was not working. I put somewhere between 5 and 10 bucks in the cab over the course of our trip to Seaside, which is funny considering there was also an F-Zero AX cabinet with a motion seat as well in the same arcade. Was a fun time to experience, and if ever given the chance, go play it if you find an arcade cab of it.

Despite the issues you mentioned, there are efforts to preserve these cabs and to sometimes preserve them with the likes of SSD upgrades and the like. I believe the community is doing a great job to save these games as I'm a big advocate for Arcade history. I reckon the games would run a lot better on a more era-appropriate OS like XP or 2K.

    Oh boy where to even begin. The whole "frontend ui" you speak of that runs the attract and service modes was very common with GlobalVR games (any 'Vortek' multigame, Nascar, PGA Tour, Madden, Six Gun Select, Twisted Nitro Stunt Racing, Redline Rampage). Furthermore, they all have the "normal copy" of the game files installed much like with NFS (maybe except for Six Gun Select). Because installing this involves messing with system and registry files, playing these games are best done on a virtual machine so the arcade game specific registry and system files are installed there (after all, GlobalVR did not design those computers for consumer usage).
    If anything, emulation of the USB I/O boards would also be preferred to so nobody would have to do ridiculous configurations just to play what's seemingly a watered down port on the outside but something unique on the inside (except Nascar because that game is still boring regardless).
    P.S. Long live Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 2

    fucking EA seeing profit in the dying arcade market of 2003 is so funny to me. like yeah it's fair enough that japanese companies like arcsys or capcom still released stuff for arcades even after home consoles reigned supreme but EA?
    edit: on another note, the Underground arcade port seems different from the one most of the larger community knows about. Were there really 2 ports or am I stupid?

    • @Kaceydotme
      @Kaceydotme  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In fairness, there was still a small market for amusement machines in America, especially driving and sports games. You still find Golden Tee in sports bars, and the Raw Thrills driving games are still going pretty strong. It makes sense from EA's standpoint IMO. GlobalVR did all the additional development and distribution-- all EA had to do was provide a license and dev tools, and collect a check.
