I just had a coworker send me a picture of self-heal and linden flowers asking what they were.
I immediately jumped on the motorcycle and headed to his place and harvested a bunch of both.
Tonight is the first time ever having self-heal tea and interestingly to me it tastes and smells similar to a very mild aroma of canned cooked spinach.
I been waiting a long time to find some and was considering buying seeds this year.
I dug a bunch up at my coworkers and planted it at my place, hoping it will take off and thrive.

going to give this a try on one of my goats. he was attacked by a dog a week ago. very disappointed in our vet for not doing more to help him. As far as injuries go, he got off easy. just very minor injuries, but they are on his head... his ear, jaw and under his tongue where his beard is located. he also developed a limp a few days later. the vet scratched her head, walked around him in a circle and kinda shrugged. claimed he didn't have an infection because it didn't smell..... nevermind the pus leaking from the bite on his ear or the swelling around his jaw. she gave me some pain meds for him and sent us on our way.
she did everything i did but SHE got paid for it!
anyway... he isn't getting worse but he isn't getting better either. he wants to eat but the injury under his tongue seems to be preventing him from getting the food to the back of his throat to be swallowed. and yet he can drink water just fine! (yes i am now giving him a liquid diet via syringe) he's being a very good patient in spite of being wild and untouchable...which just shows how badly injured he is. on a normal day you can't get closer than a hundred yards.
lately he has this inner conflict where he wants to hop away...... but he knows i am his only source of food so he kinda hops a few feet then looks back at me like "oh all right...let's get it over with!"
so i found this herb last week in an herbal shop on etsy. i was in search of oregano because i have witnessed that tincture perform miracles. but i simply couldn't pass up the name "self heal!" so i got a vial of that as well. it arrived in the mail today - still waiting for my oregano.
now it's just wait and see.... i KNOW oregano can karate kick infection right out the door. it's helped prevent illnesses while shortening the duration of viruses that must run their course.
It has helped revive goats that were hanging on by a thread and speed up the recovery of injured chickens. the only reason i went to the vet at all was because i'd run out of my magic potion.
but now i am wondering if self heal has the same power. i gave him the first dose two hours ago with his mush. i don't know if i should administer another this evening or just wait for the morning. like i said, he's not getting worse or better, but i will take that as a positive.

Very cool. I've had huge patches of this stuff growing in my yard (or "garden" for you Brits) for years and even knew what it was but never took the time to clip any and use it. Just went out and got about 2 baking trays full. You ever notice any little bugs crawling out of them when you spread them out on the tin foil? I saw a few but I figure they won't hurt anything once they're dunked in the hot water.

Oh my word I wish I’d seen this video a few days ago. I have just literally emptied my garden of this herb not knowing what it was. I’ve recently got an allotment and have neglected my own back garden and this has sprung up everywhere. I thought it was a weed so I pulled it all out! I just hope now that I didn’t manage to get the roots and it will come back. I’m really interested in making the salve as I’ve had a problem with the palm of my hand (just the left for some reason) and it splits open and is very painful, I’ve tried so many over the counter products for this and nothing ever helps so I’m definitely going to try this one. I’ll be in the garden now looking for the plant with interest. Thank you for this video.

  • @Hayley-sl9lm

I originally sowed this (the subspecies native to the Western US, var lanceolata) for bumble bees, in a wildflower seed mix and it's one of the only things that's coming up. Good to know that I can use some of it for other purposes as well, thanks for the video! I have a plant that I started inside, and I ate one of the leaves and was surprised at how mild it was, like milder than spinach almost. I don't think I would use it as a base for a salad but I could definitely see myself eating it fresh mixed with lettuce or like spring mix & carrots as like a dressing or garnish (kind of like you would use parsley). Weirdly the slugs in my yard, which have eaten whole plants with a stronger taste than this do not eat it, maybe it tastes stronger to them.

Very nice, thank you! I have it growing in my garden now, so I can’t wait to work with it!
Just two things… I would never let the sun help dry my plant matter, because ‘the sun is your worst enemy if you’re a dead plant’. And second, I would only use dried plant matter in oils, for shelflife. 🤷‍♀️

    I missed the flowering 🙁
Can I use the seed heads for anything? Really wanted to make a tincture this year!
