I still don't understand why people throw these cars into a barn and don't do anything to them for decades. Now after rotting away for 30+ years they want to bring it back out and restore it. Had they put the car in a garage and monthly started the car and/or washed it, pumped up the tires, etc., the car would still be flawless. I have a 2019 Golf R that I bought brand new in 2019. It's my play car so it doesn't see rain. Once a month I wax and detail it out and after 3 years with only 1000 miles, the car looks better than it did when I bought it. The battery is on a tender so it's fully charged. When I do drive it, I warm it up slowly and try to drive it at least 10 miles so everything stays lubed. If you are going to park it and do nothing to it for 50 years, then just sell the car...get rid of it.
For the engine question. I would put an electric motor with around 400hp and around the same number of pound-feet of torque. Reinforced suspension, and around 90kWh battery pack. perfect for some fun and weekend rides.
First and worst, when you get the new brake drum you will find that the hub is permanently attached. The drum is supposed to be removed by taking off the nut in the center and using a special heavy duty puller designed for this type of brake. This error is not entirely your fault as the wheels on the LEFT side of the car are supposed to have left hand threaded studs. Somehow, the brake drums were installed incorrectly. If the new drum you ordered has right hand threads install it with the correct lug nuts. To make a 100% correct repair replace the remaining left hand wheel studs in the front hub with right hand threaded studs and nuts. This type of wheel stud arrangement was discontinued in later model years and the car will operate with all right hand threaded lugs. Since you have broken all of the wheel studs you must remove them from the hub and mount the puller with 1/2 inch bolts. The hub mounts to the axle shaft with a tapered fit and a key and requires much force to remove. As to the "radiator" under the front seat, that is actually the heater core. You will find the blower fan inside the right front fender. This is normally connected to the heater core box by a 4" flexible hose. This was probably removed by whoever removed the engine. There were also water hoses which connected the heater core to the engine cooling system. What engine to put in the car depends on whether you wish to do a complete restoration or make the car more dependable for every day driving. A restoration would require the original engine be put back in the car. Many Studebakers have had Chevrolet engines installed. This is quite easy as Studebaker used Chevrolet engines in 1965 and 1966. You can use factory original components such as engine mounts, transmissions, exhaust systems, radiators Etc for 1965 and 1966 model cars to install a Chevrolet engine in nearly any Studebaker built after 1951 without having to make major changes to the chassis or body. For further information contact the Studebaker Drivers Club.
In case everyone else hasn’t told you already, that “radiator” under the seat is part of the “Climatizer”. That’s the main heater core for the cabin. There should be another small core up under the dash for the defrost and the blower assembly is behind the passenger side front wheel. The little “doors” on the front fenders lets fresh air into the heater or directly into the cabin.
I'd like to add that the water valve to regulate the amount of hot water going to the heater core is under the hood on the fire wall about where the glovebox is.
Interesting! My (nearly identical) 1955 coupe didn't have the "Climatizer" option, apparently. Mine has an after market heater core that bolts to the inside of the firewall. I wonder if the Climatizer heaters were limited to the hardtops? Does anybody know? I've sure seen similar under-seat heaters. My London Taxi has a similar sort of heater - under the passenger seat in the back! (No comforts for the poor sap driving the taxi! )
Studebaker engineers were pretty sharp, locating the Climatizer under the seat. Even heat front and back and for Southern cars that did not need a heater, all the cars came with a small defrost under the dash.
I think the reaction alone puts this video in the top 5. Nothing like seeing an old man relive memories and become a child again. You know he's gonna have the biggest smile on his face when he can take it out driving for the first time. Great job fellas!

I had the wagon version of this while I was in the Army in ’62. That radiator under the seat was the heater. I was too young to fix it and had many very cold trips back to Fort Bragg. Thank you for the great memories.

This brings some great memories to this 83 year old gear head. As a teeager my girlfriend's father owned a Studebaker very similar to this one. He allowed me to use it for dates with his daughter. He even asked me to teach his wife to drive in this car. Some memories never die.
Watching the owners reaction was truly heartwarming! You guys should be commended! When I was a kid during the early to mid 60's, my parents had a 57 Ford Fairlane Custom sedan !! We moved to L.A. in 60 and kept the Ford but my Mom got a 63 T-Bird that had been Repo'd, so she got a good deal!! But in 65, we moved back to Ohio, sold the T-Bird, and drove the Ford home! When I was a Junior in High School, I worked part time for a Buick dealer which is where I got my first car which a customer traded in on a new Buick. That was a 67 Olds Cutlass convertible and I LOVED it, and wish I still owned it!!!
The mistake is so minor compared to the reaction and emotion you were able to give that man. It sucks because if that lug issue didn't happen it would have been a perfect job! I love these videos!I'm 65 and south African and my dad was a backyard macanic and I grew up with a Hudson hornet 1950s .I loved my dad's Hudson and he sold it and bought a Pontiac ..amazing memories.
On the wheel studs, first try drilling a hole in the center of the bolt. The bit should bind and spin the bolt out. If that doesn’t work try a self tapping bolt and that will definitely bind and give you something to use to turn the bolt. Hope that helps.
I always like to see the before/after shots of the car. Also the owner’s reactions. You asked about cars our parents had owned. My parents had some nice cars when I was a little boy-Austin-Healey 3000, ‘65 Thunderbird. About 1970 my parents bought a ‘65 Mustang. I fell in love with the car the moment I saw it. I drove it some in high school and college in the 1980s. My parents kept it for me while I was in grad school and getting established. I was finally able to pick it up when my father passed away about 10 years ago and haul it a couple of states away. It needed work. My mother was able to come to visit and see it running; she got to ride in it one last time. She passed about seven years ago. Since that time I have gotten it about 95% restored. It’s won trophies in car shows. I’ve driven it in parades. I often wish I could show it to my parents.
Joyce Richardson: My wife has remarked that she wishes my dad had kept the Austin-Healey instead of the Mustang. Don't get me wrong; she likes the Mustang, too. But she thinks the AH would be a lot of fun to tool around in.

In 1955 my parents brought me home from the hospital in their 1952 Studebaker. Because my Mom worked for Western airlines they flew back east a few times when they went to pick up a new car and then drove it back to California. I have a picture of my Mom sitting on the front fender of the Studebaker on their trip back home.

Great work! So awesome to see the joy you brought to the owners. Don’t beat yourself up about the rear drum. Everybody that works on these classic cars has similar stories/experiences. You breathed a lot of new life into that Studebaker and learned some new things in the process.
This was wonderful and it was great seeing the owner's happiness at the end! Our family was a Buick one. We just always ended up with Buicks - we did have other makes but the Buicks dominated. We had a 72-73 Riviera when I was very young, 82 Century Custom 2 door, also an 81 Skylark 4 door, 83 (?) Skylark 2 door, 84 LeSabre 4 door.. Good cars! My first car was a Sea Blue 66 Beetle.
My dad had a '71 Chevelle station wagon from '86-'92. I LOVED that car. He was the second owner and we lost track of it 3 owners later. After 15 years of searching, I have found his old car sitting in Kentucky. I'm in the process of buying it back, once I work out how to ship it.

Absolutely beautiful. I have a 1955 President coupe, virtually identical but for having a V8 and B pillars and flip out rear windows. Love what you are doing.
My dad had a 1955 Studebaker President Speedster. The Speedsters were easily identified by a circular medallion on the side trim just behind the door opening. There were only 15,000 of these made and they were intended to be owned by the dealers themselves. It cost my dad $3800. It had a tri-tone paint scheme of a white top, Pimlico gray hood, fender tops and deck lid, and Congo ivory lower sides. The seats were upholstered in Congo ivory leather. The front bench seat had an asymmetric back where the driver's portion was approximately 1/3 of the whole. The reason for this was to make it easier for passengers to enter the rear seating from the curb since this car was a two-door coupe. The carpeting was red horse hair. The inside door panels were also leather, this time in Pimlico gray. I believe the headliner was white leather. All of the leather interior was cross stitched in a diamond pattern. The instrument panel was made of machine turned aluminum and supported an array of Stewart Warner gauges with a tachometer. The speedometer ranged up to 160 MPH. The engine was basically a Cadillac engine with smaller bores in the cylinders to give a displacement of 289 cubic inches. It was topped off with a Rochester 4-BBL carburetor. The automatic transmission was a Borg Warner 3 SPD of the same type as used in the Mark X Jaguar sedan. This model had more chrome and stainless steel trim than any of the line. My dad's car had the optional stainless steel wire wheel covers.
My family had a 1954 Studebaker Champion 2-door sedan (maroon over a cream white) that we bought new. My mom and I on a Easter weekend in 1956 totaled it in Vinita, OK. I still have the 3-legged pop-out rear arm rest (we had left it at home for the trip). We had owned a 1948 Studebaker Landcruiser, a 1951 V-8 Landcruiser, a 1952 Champion 2-dr hardtop, and the 1954 Champion 2-dr sedan. Fond memories.

My folks owned a lot of cars over the years. 1964 Cadillac Sedan Deville with Fire mist saddle poly coat exterior paint color. 1958 Buick Special Turquoise and white exterior color. Later on Dad drove a 1978 Mercury Cougar White exterior with Red/White interior. My dad would wheel and deal for cars never buy new. The 64 Caddie he paid 200.00 for it. Lots of memories of riding in those cars and a few others the folks owned. Great job on this old studebaker.

My Parents drove a 1957 Chevy, then a 1965 Oldsmobile wagon. All eight of us would pile in the wagon, which had a third seat that faced backwards, and go see some movies at the Drive-In. We would make popcorn on the stove and put it in paper grocery bags and brew a large jug of ice tea. What fun!
My mother had a black on black convertible when I was about 9 or 10. Great memories of sitting on top of the back seat and watching "The 7 Faces of Dr Loo" at the Drive-in.
Here is a bit of help from a 75 year old who had a 56 Studebaker Golden Hawk. The rear axels are held in by the brake backing plate, unbolt then and a couple of raps in the axel will work the bearing race out. I broke a few as a teenager of 16 in 1965...and replaced them on the road. looking back I am so glad they were not held in by "C" clips as todays cars are.
I know nothing about cars, except. '' that's a nice shape'' or '' that's a lovely colour''. But I loved watching this transformation, you all worked so hard, and boy was it worth it. Then you blew me away and saved the wee mouse.Big YAY for all the good guys.Well done.
Great video! The right side wheel lugs have left-hand threads so if one lug bolt loosens, its tendency is to tighten while the car is traveling forward instead of loosening and spinning off. Also the locking gas cap will ensure that no one can siphon gas out of the tank. But I gotta say, you did a fabulous job on that Studebaker.
My best memories of a vehicle that my parents had was a 1985 Monte Carlo SS that they ordered and had to wait to be delivered from the Chevy factory in Texas to Foster Chevrolet in Sandusky, Ohio. We got to the dealership when the car hauler arrived and watched them unload it. My mom cried. The car has sat in a barn for nearly 19 years now and I'd LOVE for your crew to detail it!
Too bad you aren't closer to us. My husband has a 1960 Starliner that has been garaged for 33 years and I would love to see it detailed the way you do. We hope to get it back on the road this year. Many times through the years we thought we would be ready to go, and the money was just never there. It only has 59000 miles on the engine and just needs new gaskets and wiring from sitting so long. We also plan to have the seats reupholstered. They are fabric and not in the best shape..
Hi, really appreciate your videos My dad, when he retired he bought a black studebaker champion (a automatic with the gears select buttons situated on the dashboard, righthand side of the steering wheel Every weekend on Sunday, it was my job to detail clean that car A lot of chrome that had to shine,rubber floor mats and tyres were polished with shoe polish, it shined Oh it came with a standard car radio, but the previous owner had a seven single record player installed below the radio attached to the dashboard Oh it was a beautiful car, it really turned heads, it was such a pleasure doing the detail on that car, that was 52 years ago Oh and my brother had a Studebaker detona and the Studebaker lark was a racing stock car Ja when my father passed on, they sold all the cars, yes I did get to take the champion, for a quick spin around the block Really good cars, now at my age 66, I would like to have one of them as a project car
I was 6 years old and my Dad showed up in Tuskeegee, Ok. with a beauitful creamy yellow and white Studebaker...it was beautiful...when i saw this car in the trailor i recognized it immediately. I think ours was fourdoor though. 😊
Dad loved Studebaker, and we had three growing up, 53 Champion 6, 53 Commander V8, and 56 Golden Hawk. I learned to drive on the '53 Commander V/8, three on the tree. Dad let me put 3in lowering blocks and spun aluminum lake hub caps and dual glass packs on her. That Loewy Coupe design was way ahead of its time. Our last was a '56 Golden Hawk. A Muscle Car before the Muscle Cars. I was king of the Pack in '58. Ahh the memories. Keep 'em alive. 14:14...Back in the day it was a Studillac. The 331-cubic-inch Cadillac Rocket OHV V/8 was the Kat's PG's. Today the Chevy LS is probably the engine of choice.

For old chrome I use 0000 wire wool. It removes the rust and polishes the chrome with no scratches.

@@tedpreston4155 Climatizers we’re available from 1939 on. They weren’t standard equipment though so many cars were produced with heaters like yours.

Austin-Healey 3000s are my favorite!!! Such a great car and a good motor. They fetch a terrific price now.

That radiator looking thing is and underseat heater Studebaker and Packard used them as optional equipment - other companies used them too.

Great work! So awesome to see the joy you brought to the owners. Don’t beat yourself up about the rear drum. Everybody that works on these classic cars has similar stories/experiences. You breathed a lot of new life into that Studebaker and learned some new things in the process.

This was wonderful and it was great seeing the owner's happiness at the end! Our family was a Buick one. We just always ended up with Buicks - we did have other makes but the Buicks dominated. We had a 72-73 Riviera when I was very young, 82 Century Custom 2 door, also an 81 Skylark 4 door, 83 (?) Skylark 2 door, 84 LeSabre 4 door.. Good cars! My first car was a Sea Blue 66 Beetle.
BTW....don't worry about breaking things like where studs. This is how you learn. You are honest and hard working with your customers needs at heart.
I commend you for doing such honest work and doing right by your customer.
My dad had a '71 Chevelle station wagon from '86-'92. I LOVED that car. He was the second owner and we lost track of it 3 owners later. After 15 years of searching, I have found his old car sitting in Kentucky. I'm in the process of buying it back, once I work out how to ship it.

My dad had a 1955 Studebaker President Speedster. The Speedsters were easily identified by a circular medallion on the side trim just behind the door opening. There were only 15,000 of these made and they were intended to be owned by the dealers themselves. It cost my dad $3800. It had a tri-tone paint scheme of a white top, Pimlico gray hood, fender tops and deck lid, and Congo ivory lower sides. The seats were upholstered in Congo ivory leather. The front bench seat had an asymmetric back where the driver's portion was approximately 1/3 of the whole. The reason for this was to make it easier for passengers to enter the rear seating from the curb since this car was a two-door coupe. The carpeting was red horse hair. The inside door panels were also leather, this time in Pimlico gray. I believe the headliner was white leather. All of the leather interior was cross stitched in a diamond pattern. The instrument panel was made of machine turned aluminum and supported an array of Stewart Warner gauges with a tachometer. The speedometer ranged up to 160 MPH. The engine was basically a Cadillac engine with smaller bores in the cylinders to give a displacement of 289 cubic inches. It was topped off with a Rochester 4-BBL carburetor. The automatic transmission was a Borg Warner 3 SPD of the same type as used in the Mark X Jaguar sedan. This model had more chrome and stainless steel trim than any of the line. My dad's car had the optional stainless steel wire wheel covers.

My family had a 1954 Studebaker Champion 2-door sedan (maroon over a cream white) that we bought new. My mom and I on a Easter weekend in 1956 totaled it in Vinita, OK. I still have the 3-legged pop-out rear arm rest (we had left it at home for the trip). We had owned a 1948 Studebaker Landcruiser, a 1951 V-8 Landcruiser, a 1952 Champion 2-dr hardtop, and the 1954 Champion 2-dr sedan. Fond memories.

My dad and grandfather drove an 81 Buick Park Ave and a Pontiac Bonneville respectively. I enjoyed driving either one of those cars back and forth during high school. Such great memories.

As for my memories of what my folks drove. My folks owned a lot of cars over the years. 1964 Cadillac Sedan Deville with Fire mist saddle poly coat exterior paint color. 1958 Buick Special Turquoise and white exterior color. Later on Dad drove a 1978 Mercury Cougar White exterior with Red/White interior. My dad would wheel and deal for cars never buy new. The 64 Caddie he paid 200.00 for it. Lots of memories of riding in those cars and a few others the folks owned. Great job on this old studebaker.

My dad bought a 1960 Hawk 2 door. it was black with red interior. My 3 brothers and I were crammed in the back on long trips. Great lines and colour.
It is absolutely amazing how the old cars clean up. The quality was much better back then.

My Parents drove a 1957 Chevy, then a 1965 Oldsmobile wagon. All eight of us would pile in the wagon, which had a third seat that faced backwards, and go see some movies at the Drive-In. We would make popcorn on the stove and put it in paper grocery bags and brew a large jug of ice tea. What fun!
My mother had a black on black convertible when I was about 9 or 10. Great memories of sitting on top of the back seat and watching "The 7 Faces of Dr Loo" at the Drive-in.
Here is a bit of help from a 75 year old who had a 56 Studebaker Golden Hawk. The rear axels are held in by the brake backing plate, unbolt then and a couple of raps in the axel will work the bearing race out. I broke a few as a teenager of 16 in 1965...and replaced them on the road. looking back I am so glad they were not held in by "C" clips as todays cars are.
I know nothing about cars, except. '' that's a nice shape'' or '' that's a lovely colour''. But I loved watching this transformation, you all worked so hard, and boy was it worth it. Then you blew me away and saved the wee mouse.Big YAY for all the good guys.Well done.

Great video! The right side wheel lugs have left-hand threads so if one lug bolt loosens, its tendency is to tighten while the car is traveling forward instead of loosening and spinning off. Also the locking gas cap will ensure that no one can siphon gas out of the tank. But I gotta say, you did a fabulous job on that Studebaker.
I was raised to “stand up and be accountable” when you make a mistake. And you did that very thing. Very impressed.

My best memories of a vehicle that my parents had was a 1985 Monte Carlo SS that they ordered and had to wait to be delivered from the Chevy factory in Texas to Foster Chevrolet in Sandusky, Ohio. We got to the dealership when the car hauler arrived and watched them unload it. My mom cried. The car has sat in a barn for nearly 19 years now and I'd LOVE for your crew to detail it!

Too bad you aren't closer to us. My husband has a 1960 Starliner that has been garaged for 33 years and I would love to see it detailed the way you do. We hope to get it back on the road this year. Many times through the years we thought we would be ready to go, and the money was just never there. It only has 59000 miles on the engine and just needs new gaskets and wiring from sitting so long. We also plan to have the seats reupholstered. They are fabric and not in the best shape..

Every weekend on Sunday, it was my job to detail clean that car
A lot of chrome that had to shine,rubber floor mats and tyres were polished with shoe polish, it shined
Oh it came with a standard car radio, but the previous owner had a seven single record player installed below the radio attached to the dashboard
Oh it was a beautiful car, it really turned heads, it was such a pleasure doing the detail on that car, that was 52 years ago
Oh and my brother had a Studebaker detona and the Studebaker lark was a racing stock car
Ja when my father passed on, they sold all the cars, yes I did get to take the champion, for a quick spin around the block

I was 6 years old and my Dad showed up in Tuskeegee, Ok. with a beauitful creamy yellow and white Studebaker...it was beautiful...when i saw this car in the trailor i recognized it immediately. I think ours was fourdoor though. 😊

Dad loved Studebaker, and we had three growing up, 53 Champion 6, 53 Commander V8, and 56 Golden Hawk.
I learned to drive on the '53 Commander V/8, three on the tree. Dad let me put 3in lowering blocks and spun aluminum lake hub caps and dual glass packs on her. That Loewy Coupe design was way ahead of its time. Our last was a '56 Golden Hawk. A Muscle Car before the Muscle Cars. I was king of the Pack in '58. Ahh the memories. Keep 'em alive.
14:14...Back in the day it was a Studillac. The 331-cubic-inch Cadillac Rocket OHV V/8 was the Kat's PG's. Today the Chevy LS is probably the engine of choice.
