I was the lone female working with younger male co-workers at a warehouse in 1993 when I first heard this song. Hearing that young men had issues with self-esteem was a revelation to me. This song made music history in my eyes because it was the first time a man sang about not having self-esteem. That takes guts and it impressed me. I like the edgy music to this day. It's a masterpiece.
Its taken a lot of different forms, time, acceptance, etc...for a lot of people to really not only realize that men are vulnerable with their feelings, but guarded at the same time. They express their self esteem issues with their male friends, but those friends will never let anyone else know what they heard. Women may only learn of their(men) insecurities a long time down the road, once he feels like his insecurities wont be held against him. We do have feelings, we do have emotions. Sometimes so deep it pains us to want to share them with other people because we don't want to burden them with our problems while they have their own stuff going on. Bottom line. Even the most positive man you know, is struggling with something. I dont mean just men, but in this case, we are all fighting something inside we wont share.
I always kinda thought Dexter was being satirical. Trying to highlight to people who do put up with that kinda shizz just how awful a situation it is, when you're the one hearing about it.
Oh yeah.. I was born in '77 and and arrived just at the right time to get the full package of diversity, universal love and equality from all across the globe showered over my because of Mtv during my high-school period. It made me remember the real important stuff and forget what was not useful to me.
The point of the song is definitely to tell people to not let themselves be lead on and humiliated by abusive and manipulative partners. It is pretty satirical, and the "more you suffer, the more it shows, you really care, right?" shows that the protagonist tries to convince himself, but knows that indeed it is NOT right. Offspring had a great ability to write pretty deep lyrics while delivering them on upbeat joyous and catchy music. Great band
