      Not that it really matters but he described himself as hetero sexual - and I think he should know. He dabbled a bit in his younger days and this led him to the conclusion that he was, by and large a straight man. He was wrongly castigated for saying this, certain members of the lgbt community took this as him being anti gay or ashamed of his past - he was of course neither - he was just trying to be honest.

But I had no inclination to hold any banners nor be a representative of any group of people. I knew what I wanted to be, which was a songwriter and a performer, and I felt that bisexuality became my headline over here for so long. I feel the exact same way that people care far too much about sexuality, both those who hate non-straight people and those who love non-straight people.
      I grew up in a pretty religious family in the southwest. I remember thinking “eh, I might kinda like guys” and being fine with myself. But I surrounded myself with these people who care so deeply about these things on the positive.
      I was fine with it myself, and I have a pretty progressive family, but that’s exactly why I didn’t wanna say anything. They’d probably give me special treatment. Instead of treating me like an individual who has qualities and flaws, they’d view me as their “gay friend”, or “gay family member”. They’d treat me better or not make certain jokes around me, maybe avoid certain topics while I’m in the room. It’s bullshit.
      This doesn’t deeply upset me, or make me horribly depressed “oh woe is me” like some people try to pretend, I’m just mildly peeved.
      I like making what’s considered “poor taste” jokes. I like jokingly calling people f*gs and jokingly being called a f*g. It’s funny because it’s absurd. But I feel like I can’t be perfectly honest because everyone would treat me like a child who can’t handle anything.

      @facelessdrone 3 ปีที่แล้ว +182

      @@dogol284 you say that, but its ironic the ammount of privelege you have. You get to joke about those things, you get to only be "mildly peaved" whereas people like me could be killed because of it. Thats why a lot of people care so deeply about turning it into a positive, because you dont realize how lucky you truly have it. If I hear the f word muttered out loud, I freeze because I know I am going to be physically hurt. We need to work on it becoming a positive thing everywhere, not just "normal" in some places.

    • @comicconcarne
      @comicconcarne 3 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      @@dogol284 I sympathize with you, and this is why gay liberation both in the 20th century and now also complains about fetishism. Having you be "the funny soft gay friend" is NOT respecting you.
      We can't forget that in the 80s and 90s, gay pride became more prominent, not to say "look at me, accept me," not even for marriage, but for AIDS awareness. It was a literal struggle for survival. Gay people became vulnerable, and therefore marketable - particularly with straight celebrities who could be their ambassador without having to hear any actual gay people. But that's why this Bowie interview is so good, he's his own voice.
      People like Bowie aren't "neutral" about sexuality just because they're nonchalant and private. Rather, he's the most positive you could possibly be about it. But the fact that others react negatively - not only to him but to anyone like him with less fame - is the only reason it's brought up at all.
      People only wrap themselves in rainbow flags when it's not the backdrop of their society.

    • @kurtfelix1412

      He's so correct. I remember in that movie Saturday Night Fever where one of Travolta's character's friends called Bowie a "f @ g g 0 t" and the lady character had to correct him and say "he's bisexual" or something like that. I thought why even mention that in the film. But I'm sure back then, that was the talk of the town, of the country, in the US. And it probably stood in his way, success wise. He was true to himself.

I.E. engaging in penetrative sex without condoms, as many gay men in the 80s and 90s contracted aids from such activity. +SheWoreLemon83 That's your personal opinion. Since Bowie varied so much on this topic, there is no definite truth. The same goes for his crossdressing and androgynism. If you watch his videos closely, from beginning to the very end, there's always this fluidity that is apparent. Even in Valentine's Day from 2013 there's a lady who plays his younger self, not a man.

    • @GenuineHeather
      @GenuineHeather 8 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      +Joan C It's fine that you are heterosexual. What I mean is that it's perfectly normal and natural for human sexuality to exist in a spectrum, rather than a rigid duality. If you are truly at one extreme end of that spectrum, there's nothing wrong with that. But to be clear, that actually puts you in the minority. Most people have, at various times in their lives, had sexual feelings for someone of the same gender. Not everyone acts on those feelings, but they are there just the same, and they're perfectly natural. But our society--largely due to the pressure of religion--has widely condemned such feelings. It has only been very recently that our culture has grown more accepting and understanding of such natural tendencies. Yet those feelings are actually the source of a great deal of homophobia and transphobia. The "wrongness" of those feelings are so ingrained, that when a supposedly "straight" person experiences them, they become enraged and blame "homosexuality". Sad.

    • @SincerityJ
      @SincerityJ 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Gay, bi, and hetero only sex are all normal. But it's clear what the majority and minority is. I've looked up the stats, as pasted below.
      1. Nearly 13% of women between the ages of 18-44 said that they were attracted to both sexes.
      2. The percentage of men who self-identify as bisexual in the 18-44 age demographic: 1.8%.
      3. When asked about sexual attraction, however, almost 6% of men stated that they were attracted to both men and women.

    That what he said to Blender in 2002 (the question was about his statement in 1983 of being a 'closet heterosexual') : "I don't think it was a mistake in Europe, but it was a lot tougher in America. I had no problem with people knowing I was bisexual. But I had no inclination to hold any banners nor be a representative of any group of people." Bowie said he wanted to be a songwriter and performer rather than a headline for his bisexuality, and in "puritanical" America, "I think it stood in the way of so much I wanted to do".
    So, he said he was straight for marketing, to sell more albums since Americans didn't tolerate bisexuality too much (For example, when Queen dressed in drag for the video of I want to Break Free, even if it was just a parody of a soap opera, in that way they lost the US market.
    So he was bi for FACT
