Throwing Wheels and Aerobatics at my Newly Adopted Sig Kadet Senior - March 23, 2019

  • David was gracious enough to join LuAnn and me and to capture some of my more recent stunts that I've been throwing at the Sig manufacturing Kadet Senior ARF that I adopted from him this past winter. Now that we've had some time to throw custom DIY navigation lights, super-sized motor/ESC/prop, wild control surface throws via performance servo actuators and some fancy flaperon mixing, Now I put his old 5" foamy wheels back on my Eflite Beast 60E landing gear with the new tail dragger setup.
    Not only do I throw some hovers, harriers, knife edge, inverted flight, half-cubans, reverse half-cubans, upright flat spins and low-speed fly-bys, but I then take the old girl out into the rough, swampy field to practice some touch-and-goes as an STOL bush plane.
    It was after this video that I decided to purchase some 6" soft pneumatic tires to complete the bush plane look and performance.
    It won't be long and I'll need to re-install the floats that were supplied with this aircraft so we can resume our float plane activities from Benton Lake.
    Thank you for watching and stay tuned!

    I expect this is a gasoline engine rc plane, but it's okay.. cause i love this model. Awesome 👍

    The color scheme looks great against the blue sky with wispy white clouds. Great flying.

      I don't know if you noticed, but that Sig Kadet Senior is also sporting a custom navigation light controller that I engineered and programmed myself. It looks like that Arduino project might be up your alley.

      Thank you for sharing the adventure and for the kind comments, BALAZSER1. We usually fly from the lake over here but spring leaves us in an awkward situation, leaving us "forced" to fly from a hard surface. lol
      Here I'm just beginning to explore the flight envelope of this newly adopted, classic "trainer".
      May all of your landings be "gear down".

    Great video and thanks for sharing it with us. I really missing the four stroke nitro sound watching this but the plane and your flying was still great. I should have mine broke in this weekend and flying shortly after. Though it will take me a good long while to get comfy tossing mine around like that.

      Careful how you say, "break-in". With the reduced events of this past year, it's been a year-and-a-half since I've had my big two strokes fired up. I don't miss the noise or the mess, but I miss the "smoke shows".

    How do you like using flaperons? I’m getting ready to test fly mine and contemplated mixing the ailerons to include flap functions.

    • @mnragnar
      @mnragnar  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      heeder777...
      I love the flaperon mix! On calm days and evenings, I will often fly entire 10-minute flights with them fully deployed. This gentle-giant will get insanely slow with them deployed and the light wing-loading of this craft hasn't gotten me into a tip-stall... yet. The flaperons will also give an insanely sharp cornering capability at slow speeds. Float slowly by, bank hard while giving healthy rudder and power and you''ll find it pointing back you in no-time-flat. The roll-outs are also insanely short with the flaperons deployed. With sufficient power and flaperons, you won't need much runway (or lake) for take-offs and landings.
      Yes, this one flies from land, snow and water with wheels, skies and floats.
      With the addition of my DIY navigation light set, this also flies night and day in addition to year-round.

    what was the purpose of changing it to a tail dragger from tri?

    • @mnragnar
      @mnragnar  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Greetings again, Kevin M.
      That's a great question!
      If you've viewed some of my other videos, I have a small collection of tricycle geared aircraft in my collection and a whole lot of tail-draggers. I started with tricycle gear on my first "trainer" aircraft as recommended for the novice. It didn't take me long to find that maintaining nose gear on an RC aircraft wasn't fun. They are heavy, weak, and perform poorly at high speed and with any cross wind. My first non-trainer was my Ace Cloud Dancer 60 and I quickly found that the tail-dragger was more "sporty", accommodated cross-winds better, was less maintenance, and less weight. The tail-dragger performs superior on rough surfaces and allows the pilot to start "flying" the aircraft while the main gear is still on the ground. It also converts to snow-skis very well.
      th-cam.com/video/Cr8-86x6Zdo/w-d-xo.html
      Watch the tricycle geared aircraft zig-zag down the runway on take-offs and landings. You'll see them tipping over on turns all the time. The tail-draggers have a very large foot print and are very stable on the ground and the tail-gear never over-steers the craft as the nose gear will. In-fact, you can either let the tail-gear simply caster behind the aircraft or do away with the tail-wheel altogether and simply install a "skid". You can then taxi the plane with the only the rudder on an aerobatic plane as I've done in THIS video.
      Fly from a grass field with tricycle gear and you'll see the difference from how this one handles a REALLY rough field.

      Thank you for asking, Kevin M!

      @@mnragnar Thanks for the answer, I just remember chipping props like crazy on tail draggers. Although I do remember the pro's at the flying fields all had them. I think the tail dragger i had may have had wheels too far back:)

    • @mnragnar
      @mnragnar  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup! I've already forgotten about those days.
      My Cloud Dancer 60 has wire main gear that tend to fold rearward on each landing, making the plane nose over on successive landings. You'll see that I have a lot more aluminum and nylon main gear that aren't so susceptible to that, but instead rip out the lower fuselage on rough landings. Additionally... if the tail-dragger is landed on the main gear only at higher speed, they will bounce indefinitely on landings as it's tough to prevent them from relaunching at ground contact. You'll see that I get my tail-draggers into a pretty good flare before touching down for those three-point landings and they settle out immediately. Tip-stall prone tail-draggers need to be brought in with a very shallow approach angle so they can be flared inches above the runway within ground-effect so they can also achieve a safe three-point landing without tip-stalling.
      I too used to go through a lot of props on landings as well!
      Thank you for the humble reminder, Kevin M.
