Well.. everyone doubted Tesla's ability to reach profitability and now it's getting the laggards of the much larger auto industry to innovate to catch up on the EV front. I think it's lazy reporting on FT's part to get a robotics company supplying trade fair and amusement parks to chime in advanced robotics. Yes, Elon tends to oversell his timelines but dude's execution is mostly on point. Plus he has a hugely cash flow positive business and the world's best engineers at his disposal.
I seriously don't reckon having a small Cornwall based company giving insight on what is fast becoming the biggest most innovative company in the world (hint: Tesla). So much pessimism tsk tsk. You can't do it doesn't mean others cannot.....

You seem to miss the point. Previously humans did most of the tedious tasks but instead of literally build a automatic human we instead just built entire automated factories that are way better than any humanoid robot could ever be, they are purpose built. The humans are mostly there for tasks with large varieties or for supervision, you would still want those even if you had a humanoid robot.

The correct approach is to have them Look like robots, without faces.
Because we need them for labor.. Nothing else.. If we want a thinking robot or a classroom aid, we should instead focus on something similar to SIRI, CORTANA or BIGSBY .. simply a voice, maybe even something you would see on a screen..
The idea is to not waste time and resource on something unnessesary. Or give a Robot designed to be amongst children the risk of malfunctioning and using its mechanical physical strength to harm kids.
But also limiting OpenAI thinking machines to a limited actions that it can perform in the real world. For example being unable to communicate with or command Physical robots. So its not able to become skynet :)

@Jonathan Loeppky yeah exactly that could fit easily. Tesla has AI specialty in the bag, and manufacturing so scaling wouldn't be an issue. The only thing we need to really see improved in these early days is how they get on with 1 walking as they haven't done this before (although this problem has been solved by other companies so easily possible) and 2 the dexterity of the movement in terms of manipulating the world around it.
With this in mind I see the Tesla bot happening very easily at least at a basic level. Maybe pick up item X and place it over at place Y. That alone would have a ton of use and the platform can be improved to be more capable over the next 10, 20, 30+ years just like our smart phones develop over time.

In the home should not be the target market. Think businesses even small businesses where this easily could replace receptionists, go-fers, and I'm thinking security services, especially overnight security. That alone, night watchman, would be huge and actually BETTER than the two humans each position now requires. This robot won't fall asleep on the job, won't drink on the job, won't do drugs on the job - that alone is huge. It has better hearing, sight (infrared?), and doesn't need a potty break or want to go on vacation.

Did you know that when one Tesla Bot learns something, it uploads the learned information to the A.I. mind cloud AKA SkyNet so that all Tesla Bots can access the new, learned information? That’s how Tesla’s A.I. works. For example, if you’re fighting back against a Tesla Bot attacking you and you’re lucky enough to destroy it, it would have uploaded information about who you are to SkyNet by the time that it’s destroyed and dozens of other Tesla Bots, which are all being operated by the same A.I. mind via SkyNet, will find you and destroy you.
