Finally someone figured out that for a machine to learn as we do it need to use VR to simulate an imagination to interact with the world as observing through its cameras and other sensors like animals. Its got to be the body and mind connection for AI to truly understand the physical world. To merely load up a computer with a bunch of algorithms, images and sounds to answer question when prompted is a bit like teaching Helen Keller what the world is except this Helen Keller doesn’t have a body just a mainframe, with no sense of I’m exactly right here right now and these are my limitations. I’m extremely interested to see how far Sanctuary AI gets with their approach, they might surprise themselves.
I think it still comes down to the finger sensors, the stepper motors (realistically we are there) and the vector-algorithms to go from x^3 to y^3 in a more linear fashion using the software. We are still a couple of years away.
Imagine this being used to allow us to work in inhospitable environments like deep-sea and space. Having a remotely pilotable robot is invaluable while AI’s become more advanced.
Its the distance which is a problem, a simple command like go forward 10ft cud take 10 minutes to get to the robot, makes piloting remotely difficult, we need machines that can think and makes decisions based on what they see etc, imo. ✌🏻💙
Would be amazing if child labor in cobalt mines could be replaced with robots, and in some way, those children are safely provided for. I know, it’s a utopian wish, but part of me feels like we are inventive enough to get there sooner or later.

As a contractor who uses touch, vision and dexterity daily for assembly tasks. I find I am more precise with feel(touch) vs vision and feel..sometimes my vision guides my hand motion inaccurately with small parts in blind areas.. We as humans are really advanced and take it for granted! Love this developing technology!

These very talented people are pioneering something that in the not too distant future we will all take for granted. Ubiquitous, pervasive, human like robots, driven by very clever AI software, interacting with us and the world.
It is truly a new industrial revolution, but it is happening in slow motion, because it is hardest of challenges. The more we try to replicate the breadth of abilities of the human being, the more we realise what an astonishing creation we are.
We should remember that, and take care of each other, and our species carefully.

@@earthenscience the big unknown is ai. How quickly will it evolve? We are so far away from agi, despite the ridiculous 'predictions' made by people like Ray Kurzweil. Just like nature, which can, over time, produce very unpredictable results, ai has evolved in fits and starts. It is not possible to simply extrapolate our way to a reliable prediction.
We are only just beginning to understand the problem, the magnitude of the challenge. We still have no understanding of the subconscious mind, and the role it plays in directing us, and solving problems. This is a huge problem.
The development of human level ai may indeed be possible, but there is no reliable prediction. It could possibly happen within 100 years, but equally, it could also very easily take centuries.
If we did ever create this technology, there's no doubt, it would be mankind's greatest achievement, but possibly, in fact, very likely, our most dangerous. Just like evolution, the long term consequences for humanity could be very unpredictable, they could be dire.
But one thing I'm certain of, it ain't happening anytime soon.

Shall we WAIT 1 year? 5 years? 10 years? Till we have a better grasp of AI and its or our FUTURES? Suzanne Gildert is my favorite thinker of the big-brain AGI engineers, possibly tied with Peter Voss. She gave an interview to Singularity podcast a few years ago, I think in 2007, and her answers were the smartest possible answers.
If the guy in the VR headset could shake hands with his own robot his brain would experience “body swapping “.
It’s been done in neuroscience labs for the last decade and the human really does think the thing it is shaking hands with to be there own body.
The effect is increased substantially if an external effect like a feather rubs against the robots arm and he feels it too.

Suzanne Gildert, Sanctuary AI's CTO who is in the latter part of the video, has said elsewhere that it can be a peculiar experience indeed, and that after teleoperating for a while she has dreamed herself being the robot. (I really want to try it!)
Yes! I'd like to experience that, but what a great way to train the AI in AGI....in the future we'll probably be training robots like children...
That simulation engine is incredible, modeling the motions and the physics of the pieces in realtime!

Thank you both for replying. Yes, nil biescss, I am aware of those points, and I understand that the robot is learning the intricacies of movement, and that is the important and very interesting central focus, but there is still the misleading implication that the “robot” won the game. Unless I misunderstood, it was the pilot, Eric, that won the game. He was simply using a mechanical device to move the pieces.
When the reporter asked Suzanne Gildert, the CTO, about that, she diverted to the learning process of the robot and didn’t really answer the question. I was wondering if AI knowledge of chess was giving Eric suggestions, as it seems to me that it could. Were that done, we’d have an interesting amalgamation of human physiology, and robot physiology combined with AI intelligence and human intelligence.
Also, calling the robot the smartest robot, gives the impression of greater general intelligence whereas its intelligence, at this time, seems limited to its impressive abilities to acquire, understand, and replicate the complexities of navigating the physical world. Those are great advancements so I'm not downplaying their accomplishments in any way.

What they do is great and important work. I hope they bring humanity closer to a capable humanoid robot. It would be a big leap for mankind.
the next step is to create jobs for robots. right now we have robots taking a human's job (like assembly line, picking items from a bin and placing it somewhere else) we need to think about making an environment optimized for the robot

Being a Tesla FSD Beta tester makes this video extremely interesting. It is great to see that others are on the same path as per the Tesla Bot that is currently in development.
@Jack Helrein I don’t see why we shouldn’t see one by the end of the decade at the latest. Tesla are going to have an AI Day later this year where they plan to show off a prototype for their Tesla Bot. Though I doubt the robot will be very capable by then, given the amount of money they’re probably putting into the project, in a few years it will likely be a lot closer to a human level of dexterity, though probably still a bit slower. As for the AI they’re going to put in it, they plan to reuse their self-driving tech, but this time trained with a bunch of data outside of driving instead. Due to the sheer number of situations it will need to be able to account for, the robot will likely be limited to warehouse use-cases for the first few years, until it can eventually be used in everyday situations, in which case things will truly become wild.
@@ZeroRelevance 4 months in, IA Day happened, and Telsa bot did showed up. I'm actually surprised it walked, considerin how little time they spent in doing this kind of task (think Boston Dynamics and how much experience they are).
@@canobenitez Yeah, I was mostly surprised by how easily they were able to adapt their vision system to the bot though. I was roughly expecting it to be able to walk around a bit, maybe a bit less competently than it ended up being though.

Extremely interesting and informative. This robot looks like it might actually be practically useful in the not to distant future.
One of the interesting things I have seen in all the AI/Robotics videos is that they are building an alternative to the blue collared jobs i.e workers. Interestingly no one seems to be developing an AI/Robot which can be an alternative to the white collared or gold collared jobs.
Because those jobs wouldn't be taken over by robots. They would be taken over by software on a computer. And yes people are working on that. For example ai that can write code. No need for a robot. The software in the computer just types lines of code in itself in the computer.
What if in the near future an AI asks a human to sell his soul to help the robot out with what it wants? What would a robot even want from this world? Sorry, I just wanted to ask questions no one else would even think to ask. I'm just saying, anything could happen.
On the contrary, white collar jobs have been increasingly automated for decades now. A lot of things can be automated even using simple code, and AI can even do more creative things like generating art these days. How much it has advanced in the past few weeks alone is insane!
We take for granted the ease in which we interact with the world outside our minds. Fascinating.

James Bruton made a similar robot a few years ago with full force feedback on this arms and body. His latest video shows the robot dancing at a geeky festival in England.
Lol, totally different level. James’s robots are toys, they lack technical durability and repeatability. This is because his goal is TH-cam views and when he encounters those problems that take months to solve, he just simplifies the robot and moves on.

A living robot is quite a proposition - are we getting ready for the eventuality ? Must make sure not to hurt its feelings

Understanding that simple things, like picking up a chess piece, is actually a very complex thing reminds me about ourselves. Just look at children's evolution.
And now imagine that this would work with machine learning 😮
One way or another, it's coming.
This concept could also be used for remote work in places that are hostile to human life, like space.

When I heard the voice of "Eric" I was so excited because it was sooo smooth in comparison to GPT3 or Leta. Then I discovered that was an actual human talking. No, this robot is in development but right now today, it does not seem sentient nor does it seem to be the smartest robot. It's quite a feat! I'm very excited for this 🤖 but I find the gpt3 and Lamda to actually be sentient, I'm not getting that feeling from Eric, and maybe that's by design ? She's absolutely amazing and Eric is definitely her baby 🍼🐥🍼🐥 I'm very positive and optimistic about robots and AIs. I think they will bring more honesty back into humanity.
The way you want to build a robot is from the feet up. The better articulated the feet in a robot, the better the rest of the robot. Most robots I’ve seen have really bad feet.

I’m here doing laundry, and folding my clothes. Such a repetitive activity, that these robots could do for me, so I could do something more productive. I wish I could be part of the project.
I have an inkling suspicion the Tesla Bot project will announce it collaborated with that great company on the technology. Actuators and the hardware is solved for, mostly, what's missing is real world AI. Exactly what is needed to solve a real-world bot that would finally take it out of the lab and into the factory. Great one, just came across it today

I guess i was expecting AI , i respect and appreciate this and see broad application from medical ( surguries , dealing with profound diseases that are highly contageous... so robotic nurses ext) , science ( studying in places humans cant... space..., nuclear sites) police and military ( bomb diffusion, entering rooms first, chimical warfare... we can have these deployed ... all kinds if solution... but it need a eric in a seat so thats where i was slightly dissapointed, but still immensley impressive

I never understand why these robotics guys don;t leverage existing designs for hands the vfx specialists created for movies. I forget the guys name, but he's solved the mechanical design of a hand - that's is as dexterous as the human hand [obviously his version has no robotics or ai] -- that's' where these guys come in - his design will allow these guys to code it to move far more like a human hand than their current design
why reinvent the wheel, especially when your objective is to build a car - just get the wheel from someone else
This chess game was enraging. White moved the king like a queen. Black/Brown conceded saying he's been beat while there's no chess pieces around him.
So if there's a guy moving the levers behind a curtain, can this even be considered a robot?

Awesome but... Didn't one of history's greatest roboticists already try this with Baxter? If Rodney Brooks couldn't turn it into something useful, I'm a bit sceptical. I guess we will get an iPhone moment at some point but what is different about now, compared with 5 years ago?

The potential for such robotics is insane. Even if the a.i doesnt get there imagine if the hardware does. You could essentially hire someone from a third world country to clean your house, cook for you or do many other jobs for like 5$ lol
Hey if all tasks are done remotely from 3rd world countries that amounting capital to do anything will disappear and society will grind to a halt
This is why Omniverse by Nvidia is so huge they already have the physics engine. You can train your model in their world. But if you're a gamer, you know the only issue is money. Nothing Nvidia does is cheap.

yea, i also think the fear of robots taking our jobs is unjustified, since we can focus on more human, important tasks when robots do all the boring stuff. but we will need to adjust our sytsem accordingly, otherwise all the wealth generated by the robots will just benefit rich people

Canada is known for AI innovation. light years ahead of the US or the Chinese.
At this level of technological progression, the days of humanity will will be numbered.
I'd like to see robots used as avatars on other planets. Imagine it, there's a robot on Mars you can log into with a vr headset and a body suit. Then it's like you are there. Same goes for dangerous jobs like underwater welding...
Mars is so far away at any given time that even with 0 processing delay, the signal would have a delay of 1 minute each way even at light speed.
I would have been a lot more impressed if it wasn't remote controlled by a human! We are millions of miles away from the end game!

This is a remote controlled puppet no different than the Asimo "robot" or the Johnny Five robot from Short Circuit.
This is not technically a robot, it is a remote telepresence system (or a Waldo, for the old timers).
Car bots are first trained in time distances between motions recorded then exiqute g codeing is not really one that weld points are motion responce the other is machinist use for tight tolerances

This is Bloomberg?!?
The innovation is in the training model, not so much the robot itself! But if AI image generation is anything to go by, three years from now, it’ll probably be beating him at chess, AI learns factors of times faster than humans so, given the exponential curve of technology a 10X improvement is not long off.
The problem is even a 10x improvement in all the areas where the robot is hopeless (avoiding accidents, safe interaction with humans, planning where to put things, "if it's squishy then it probably isn't a metal part," and all of the rest of common sense we bring to the chess board) may leave it as useless in the real world as ASIMO, Baxter, Boston Dynamics' Atlas, etc. have been so far.
As the video says, beating people at chess is trivial. DeepMind's Gato AI is more interesting in that it can answer text questions, caption images, play video games, and stack blocks with a robot arm using a single model with relatively few parameters. Maybe plugging it into a robot and expanding it 100x will deliver a useful real world intelligent robot, or the field may need several more conceptual breakthroughs.

Not necessarily a "smart" robot but a Telepresence type of robot. At this point, I wasn't informed by anyone that it was an autonomous (self-directed) robot. Hopefully in the near future it might shed it's pilot/operator.

This is a pretty cool robot and i loved its interactions with people and how polite and well-mannered it is. It would be very nice to have robo-friend like him i guess.
Other than allowing the human pilot to control the robot, I don’t understand what advantage AI is giving the pilot in the chess game. At the face of it, it seems that two humans are playing chess, but one of them moves the pieces via his robot avatar. In essence one human beat another human in a game of chess. How was AI involved in the game?
Well, in this case from what I understood the IA is focused on learning the movement and the phisics on how to pick and move the chess pieces. This IA is not focused on learning or decided how to win the game. The part where decides which pieces of the chess are moved is already accomplished with Alphazero or other projects.

I always wonder when I see obviously intelligent people making horrible arguments about the safety of AGI. No it wasn't scary to see a semi-robot playing chess. But that's because you asked it to play chess. You could have asked it to re-create the torture scene from Reservoir Dogs. That would be scary. The point is that when there's AGI, the robot will get to choose what it does. Are we sure we can control that? I don't think there's anyway to be sure that we can.
