Losing a high percentage of your functioning tanks and fighter jets,
Losing a Naval war to a country without a Navy,
Losing over half a million soldiers and replacing them with untrained forced conscripts,
Having to depend on China, Iran and even North Korea for arms and technology (yikes),
Economic isolation from the civilized world,
Russia being exposed as a paper eagle. One that is of little consequence aside from it's nuclear weapons...
This is what Putin and his cronies have done.

The Anatartic Treaty being a condominium of countries in scientific and environmental agreement in that icy continent, has worked very well for over 60 years. Upsetting this treaty and to undermine the neutrality of Antarctica because of greed (over-fishing and threats of petroluem exploration without treaty agreements, i.e. unilateral actions which China is highly susceptible to) is very ominous and highly applicable to Antarctica.

The artic sea rout will one day become a benefit to all nations.
However it depends on global warming for it to become a year around reality. Which of course come with many downsides.
China may, or may not, one day own some of that coast line. That is an issue between Russia and China not one that the west has a seat. But neither will have control over international sea lanes.
China shows great concern for intl. sea lanes. Ask the Philippines...
