I find it insane how clear and coherent your thoughts are only days after the release. I'm still trying to collect all of my brain after Villeneuve shattered it.
There's actually so much to process that I felt half-witted after my first viewing. I understood so much of the film but expected myself to take this much away from it. Instead I was just left dumbstruck.
Lol same here guys. I had to go back and see it one more time, i chose 4DX for the extra thrill on that one. And now my brain was way more relaxed, and the movie was so good, soo incredibly good. I'm going back to see it one more time, might have still missed something ^^.. Quite possibly actually
Okay, but what mystery is left to ponder from the story after the ending? Idk but for me I still think about the themes of the original decades later but I've mostly forgotten 2049 since I watched it. Could be I'm and old jaded cinema fan, or that fresh and unique ideas in Hollywood have run dry that even an average movie like 2049 gets so much praise by comparison to all the garbage reboots and sequels and franchises.
it annoys me that such a great film did such poorly in the box office while mindless films like transformers rake in all the cash, what is wrong with people? but I do think the marketing can be put to some blame as the trailer for 2049 makes it look like a typical action movie lol im glad i watched it anyway though

There were several walk-outs at my screening, unfortunately. In fact, someone left when there was obviously five minutes left in the film. I think that all of us who liked it should see it a few times in the theater to cover the gap! The industry has been one-sided for far too long. We need more directors like Villeneuve and Nolan who can take a huge budget and find a great balance between entertainment and heavy themes/unique approaches to form. If only audiences would allow that...
Denis has literally lived my dream. I think he handled it perfectly. His involvement of Syd Mead, and that quote on wanting him to have his direct influence on a scene that was his own, man... amazing.
This is rapidly becoming my favorite channel on TH-cam. 2049 is a masterpiece in every sense of the word, the direction, performances, cinematography, production design, score, literally every cog was perfectly in sync. And although I love the first one immensely, this film made me excited about filmmaking again.
This film is an absolute crock. I'm gutted that I spent my £10 on it at cinema. A lot of positive reviews tho... So what is it? You boys don't want a sequel...... You're just fanboys who want another chance to see the China Town from a different angle.. or flying automobiles, or Decca mooching. That's why you think it's good Lol! It's not a sequel!! God, I love this masterpiece. Whenever someone said: "longueurs!" I was most impressed with the creation of the world. I had so much time to contemplate the environment, the takes, the colors, the delicate acting in a brutal storyline. Director made it so well that question on comparison to the first story disappeared. Vanished, like it was never existing. The poem, as an approach to AI coding - perfection. The very sterile, almost serial model of Joi - how can you not love it. The snow looked more like thick dust of pollution. In real such delicate, powder-like snow occurs seldom. Josef K., as the main character K., Loved this idea.
One of the best films EVER and up there with 2001 A space Odyssey and the original Blade Runner in my opinion. A deeply thought provoking existential journey. You know a movie is truly great when you leave the cinema feeling....changed.
Nautilus1972 Ok I LOVE 2001, that being said it is entirely possible that one day another science fiction film will come along and outclass it. Is BR:2049 that film? No, but it deserves to be on the same shelf with it. Along with 2001, The Original BD, and many other titans of Science Fiction Cinema. I just hate when people think that something old can’t be outclassed by something new. It’s possible. I look forward to it.
I watched Blade Runner 2049. I watched Blade Runner 200 times. Different movies from different directors from different periods, but Denis was a good choice for this sequel ... Both are masterpieces. It is without a doubt the best Villeneuve's movie ...oh, and this video is superb ...
It tried too hard to look like blade runner. Like what start war force awakening does to new hope. Maybe because Ford is also in both of them... It's a shame it doesn't like like 30 years has passed. The clothing, the car, the street, the building… the only things is they removed all the Chinese character graffiti. Replaced Chinese's vendor with Indian. Coherent is one thing but lazy with little imagination is another, taking awful old plot line and putting into new movie saying it's paying tribute is just stupid. Like street vendor doing DNA test on your wood… wearing transparent rain coats... Zoom in and out with voice is so future in the 80s, but you know we can track eye balls now right? Adding a drone on to your car is also reapply lame. Your AI girl friend is no match with my siri… Where is our light sabor iphone XXXX? You know with your prosthetic eyes~ you probably can control everything without even think about it and it become nature as part of you. Sequel shouldn't pay too much tribute or it become really annoying.

Ridley Scott did Gladiator, Alien, Blade Runner, Thelma § Louise, Body of lies, Black Hawk Down, Prometheus, The Martian (etc..), now just produced Blade Runner 2049. Denis Villeneuve did Sicario, Arrival § Blade Runner 2049. Blade Runner 2049 gets 8,2/10 on rotten tomatoes, § 8,6 on imdb, so apparently I'm not the only one liking this movie ... Show me your movies, show us the brilliance of YOUR imagination and how you transform YOUR vision into a masterpiece of cinema, and let's talk after ....
astralseeker I thing is I liked the original a lot. I watched it before I went to the movie thus i felt it's too similar. It's not saying it's not a great movie. It's just I was hoping for a new take on the cyberpunk than the 80s cyberpunk. We hasn't got any new take on the future for quiet a while. With all the new advanced technology we have in the 2017, apart from the flying cars and the funnel from gundam most of the things are just not impressive. Also I really don't like all the Vegas part. I know many people think that's impressive but from zoom in, the bee, the entering, the attitude, the fight, the fall, the really bad stage, the drink, the blowing up of the wheel, the death of AI. I really don't like much of it... The part I like is the farm, the apartment, AI at home, the snow, the street, the rain, at least he removed those neon lights. The dark street vendor and the crazy hooker. The hate on Skinner is there but not strong enough. Also the big city view looks way too simple… not enough variety compare the original. However I do appreciate their hard work, it's still pretty epic.
I don't think 2049 was his best film, I think I like Prisoners a little more and Arrival was also fantastic, but 2049 was incredible. The only beef I had with the film was (Spoilers) They dedicated so much screentime into convincing us (the audience) that K was the replicant offspring. They devoted almost two hours to that, built up the tension, had an amazing time getting there, and then it was "oh... no you're not the offspring.. but we will reveal her at the perfect time!!!" and then not only is she never revealed to the world but the ramifications are never felt. Other than that, it was downright awesome.
Production design is one aspect of the movie making process I constantly, and mistakenly, overlook. Thank you for for crafting such an insightful view into why I am so wrong in not examining such an integral part of films.
I hear you. At the same time great production design should be just absorbed and not garishly slap you in the face like 'look how spectacular I am'. BR 2049 succeeded having stunning art & settings without imposing.
God, I never realized how much yellow there was outside of the Vegas shots. Even the embryonic sludge on the barren and therefore short lived replicant. All in all, it had a beautiful, but unnatural look. Almost sulfurous. As if the world was chemically sick. It worked. I was blown away by the film. I went to see it on a cold December or January night by myself, because I didn't want to share my intimate connection to it and the original with anyone else. And I knew it might rip me up a little. And after, when I emerged into the late night, it began to snow. I sat in my car and cried for a few minutes, then left the abandoned mall feeling stunned and a little grieving. I cannot completely express how much I love the original, it is a touchstone from my youth, but the sequel left me feeling that Villaneuve was a genius. His film wasn't just fan service, it was a true continuation of a masterwork. I cannot wait for Rendezvous With Rama. It just may be Denis Villeneuve's 2001 A Space Odyssey.
When I saw the sequel for the first time, I recognised the script, which I had read, from the original movie, for the scene they never used. In that, Decard (not Kay) removes the replicant’s jaw, rather than scanning his eye, but it’s otherwise the same. I knew then that this was respecting the source material and that it was going to be good. I just didn’t yet know that it was going to be the best sequel I’d ever seen. This guy really knows his stuff and, as you say, it’s a pleasure to learn new things about the crafting of this masterpiece. The director should run classes on how to make the perfect sequel. 👍

As someone who has just shot his first short film it is so inspiring to me to witness an established filmmaker such as Denis yet again put so much passion and creativity into a film.... in this day and age of reboots, cinematic stagnant universes....here we have a legitimate, epic, creative sequel that has invigorated, inspired me in ways I did not imagine to push myself as a visual artist...thanks you cinema tyler and thank you Denis.
These little things make you think about how bleak the world is going to be without such a unique star in the sky. This man really pushed the most ceiling breaking, obscure projects. From Outside to Hours / Omikron and even Twin Peaks...

I don't agree. Bowie would "take you out of" the film.. like Sting did in Dune.. Every time you see Sting in Dune you say to yourself "oh look, there's Sting!" and now I'm out of the film and not immersed like I should be..
The way your intro transitions into the actual video just makes me so happy. Phenomenal job on the video, too. Really informative and entertaining! I really love how Blade Runner 2049 doesn't just maintain the status quo and keep the universe roughly the same as the original, like The Force Awakens did. It really takes into account how 30 years have passed and many advancements/events have occurred since.

Look at the orange surroundings outside the 'casino'. This past weekend this was what people in Napa Valley, etc saw. So, it's not futuristic, it is NOW!
I was so skeptical of this film when I first heard about it but it ended up as one of the best sequels of all time, right up there with Empire Strikes back. It completely captured the tone of the first film while expanding on the world, themes and story in a sensible fashion without going overboard. You can't really ask for much more than that. Bring on DUNE!
The script, the performances, the look and feel, the soundtrack, the story, the world building, the meditations and the fast and slow of it, the ambiguities, the story, just everything about it respected the source material whilst offering something new, to come out flawless. It’s a masterpiece. Now, the two movies sit together as a perfect collection for a whole day of cinema joy.
If this movie fails, yes that might be bad for DUNE, as it signals that people aren't ready for huge epic and deep sci-fi's, And DUNE cannot be made on a 50 million dollar budget, i'm thinking it needs to cost at least around 200 million. The sand worms alone should be 50 million xD
I am somewhat relieved to all the response I have heard for Blade Runner 2049. It is my favorite film of all time! And like many others, I was sceptical and worried that a sequel would ruin probably, in my mind, one of the greatest films ever made! I have not seen the film yet, but I am seriously looking forward to seeing it! I first watched Blade Runner in the UK on TV in 1984. The title of the film intrigued me at the age of 10 and my parents TV was broken at the time, but I figured out you could still record a movie onto a video recorder (VCR)! I have loved this film for 33 years! And have been fortunate enough to have worked on the production of Blade Runner 2049. Thanks for the great upload. Nice work.
Blade Runner is my favorite movie of all time, indeed, at the risk of sounding stupid, it's sacred to me. I got mad when I heard they were making a sequel to it, even hoped they would fail. Got to say, nobody cares about my opinion, but it is a worthy storytelling progression. The world is even more gone, melancholic, dying. People are becoming extinct. Natural selection is being replaced, by our artificial selection. Tears in the rain.
This is savagely sad to hear because I know many fans of this movie feel similarly. It seems like I experience inexplicable grief every other day. Something is lost to me, existentially. I grew up with major resentments... but in outliving them, all I have left is a bittersweet nostalgia. But for what, exactly? I resonated with K so completely. I will never forget this movie.
Literally my favorite film of the past decade. When you see how much Ridley Scott has ruined the Aliens legacy I am thankful he had minimal involvement. I love the fact they didn't make a massive thing about the "is he a replicant?" Deckard question. Complete restraint and control - I can't wait for Dune but no doubt another overlooked masterpiece in the making?
Blade Runner, Alien, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost In The Shell and Akira ...is like the MCU to me. They all exist in the same beautifully terrifying future so close we can almost touch it already
When I first saw Alien and Blade Runner on the big screen, there was no internet fan content for people like me to soak up, because there was no internet. There was an expensive, large format picture book which contained Alien stills and production art. I snapped that book up at the local science fiction bookshop immediately. Great video, man. And let me just say it here: let the beauty of this film be a lesson to filmmakers today: *get away from CGI* - go back to building sets and effects practically (at least for the most part) - when these things are done *in* camera, an audience has a deeper emotional connection to them (whether they realize it or not). It matters. And again: practical effects when done well - LAST. The original "Blade Runner", to this day, still looks incredible. Carpenter's "The Thing" still looks incredible. God bless them for doing so much of the film practically, as it was the one thing I was hugely concerned about with a sequel - that the tactility of the world would be lost and betrayed by simply being generated on a laptop. Good for them.
Ryan Gosling's quote on the vicarious appeal of bleak science fiction may just be my favorite piece of actor insight. Unforgettable movie and an equally terrific video.
The yellow-orangish I think relates more to the womb. In the apartment of the Replicant, he will come back and slice (the leitmotif of provoked birth) the plastic door. This is his journey, to birth himself. In the flooding scene, when he starts fighting the Kung Fu girl, this demonic mother archetype killing all others, they fall in the water, close to the same orange light. It has a soothing quality, embryo like.
Hit the nail on the head, man. I was thinking the same thing before my second watch. The themes of childbirth are evident. *Slight spoilers* The C-section and Coco saying it was a clean cut, no struggle. You see it again with the new model, then again at the police station and finally the last battle.
Almost everything is related to Birth - and it is a continuation of Arrival's theme. The repeated motif of two pillars on the side of the screen reminding of the position a woman gives birth. The cesarian motif that comes back a lot. The many domes we see throughout. The dark cave. The dead dry land of course (the waves coming to crush the wall would have been great, it is just as great left to the imagination) Numeral terminology regarding birth are employed throughouh the movie "you kept a bomb from going off", many I don't remember. (There's a slight touch on fertility with the dead tree, the Replicant guarding seeds, etc. Also, the horse is a sun symbol which does relate to birth - sun and birth are like penis and vagina)
Maitrī xp Yeah and when he crawls out of the waves like in the movie Gravity. Instead of being the first steps towards evolution, it symbolizes his birth that signifies that yeah....
These are all FANTASTIC and insightful facts and connections! One thing I noticed watching the movie is how many shots feature characters staged in front of windows, or are shot from outside buildings and we see their actions thru the window. For me, it showed how isolated characters felt from the rest of the world, especially for K & Stelline. In any case, great video!
2049 was honestly a much better movie than the original, and one of the all-time greatest sequels ever made. I've seen it three times now and have gleaned new information and details every single time. I've never been able to dedicate 9 hours to a single film over one weekend before but I have with 2049. It's Villeneuve's magnum opus, and the best movie of this century so far. It's just a travesty that it's such a massive financial bomb. This is the kind of movie that deserves success because it's so rare to see a film this big have such a massive amount of care and love poured into it by literally everyone involved in its entire production. Amazing movie.
We are clearly part of the same choir here so I would like to share this. I just saw the film at a matenee in the middle of week. I am an American expatriate living here in Copenhagen Denmark. So the theatre was understandably almost empty maybe 30 Danes and me. We, all of us, applauded together as the film ended.
As a Toronto native, seeing an urban city scape dusted in snow is definitely something nostalgic and creates an instant personal connection, I always loved walking through my city during snowfalls and blizzards
I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion, I’ve watched C beams glitter in the darkness at Tahousa gate. All those moments will be lost in time...like..tears in the rain.
You’re doing important work. Usually, to understand a film, we look at what is most noticeable but by taking a look at the “back door” (production and all that stuff) you raise questions and points that greatly enhance the understanding one has of the film. Thumbs up
One of the greatest feats of 2049 was that you had entirely different directors/creative staff and cast (save Harrison Ford) but he still managed to create a film that was just as good (if not better) than the original and captured the same feel. It would have been all too easy to turn it into some J.J. Abrams turdfest. It is a shame that the movie never saw the success that it should have because you rarely see a movie of that caliber come around.
Great video essay! I love production design, costuming, storytelling. I'm always as fascinated by how it's all done as I am by the finished product. I think Blade Runner 2049 is an absolute masterpiece.
Dude...I thought scale models were long gone from movies!! LOTR used a ton for its respective trilogy! Now I'm even more glad Deakins and Villeneuve were on this project.
I fell in love with the first Blade Runner movie and I was excited when 2049 came about. It is one of those films you can watch over and over. I love the worlds they are in and the music it moves you. I don't know why it didn't do well in theaters.

Fantastic breakdown dude. I appreciate the production design even more now after watching this, having stuff pointed out to me that I was too immersed in the results of to notice my first time through it.
That's a miniature effects shot. The DSLR is probably just being used there for being small enough to fit into tight spaces, and because the highly controlled VFX environment doesn't need the specific massive exposure latitude of an Alexa.

They might’ve used very long exposures in still mode since it’s a motion control take. The reason for long exposures is because a small aperture will give you longer depth of field such that you can’t tell it’s a small miniature. And since it takes a long time to expose you might as well use a still camera that can shoot in higher resolution.
This was such a great film that it's hard to put into words. That's was great films do. Instinctively, it all makes perfect sense and transcends language. You've done a nice job putting words to this masterpiece. Thank you!
One of the things I miss most about DVD/Blu Ray releases were the extensive BTS making-of documentaries included as bonus material. You do a very nice job filling in that rather large gaping hole in fandom. I appreciate your research, writing and editing.
What a fantastic 20mins of the breakdown of one of my favourite sequels of all time that functions as a stand alone giant in it's own right thanks to Denis Villenuve, Roger Deakins and an amazing production design. Thank you for this little gem in helping me understand how everything from cinematography, production design, costumes, sets etc. is linked and symbiotic to the rich, lived in reality of this film while paying homage to the original. Truly, a masterpeice of storytelling.
Popular myth has it that Scott's vision of Bladerunner was inspired by the night time chemo-industrial landscape of Teeside in the northeast of England. I'm from the area and I can imagine that it would have, the skyline was permanently illuminated by flares and lights from the ICI chemical plants and local steel works (which actually featured in Atonement), it was quite an eerie and emotive sight. Might also be a load of bollocks.
My favourite scene in the whole film was the trash dumping ship. Idk why but I’m totally obsessed with it. It’s says so many things about the world in such a short amount of time.
Oh man if Bowie had been Wallace instead of Leto that would have been incredible. I felt Leto (and the dialogue for the character) were a major weak point in the film.
TedWillingham I concur Wallace was the perfect contrast to the fatherly creator that Tyrell was. Though Bowie as that in a final role would’ve been great
I watched 2049 several times and no audience can fail to be impressed by the nearly seamless transition in look, feel, and a nearly complete transition from the original 1982 film to 2049. Creating, or re-creating a film world that audience has already seen - and no doubt has expectations for - must without a doubt be one of the most difficult and costly production effects it is possible to do. And the production team on 2049 did an utterly amazing job in every scene - every bit of the movie's budget is on screen throughout the entire film and 2049 is worth watching for that alone . Villineuve also did too good a job at duplicating the mystifying plot of the original. I will not pretend that I understood very much of either film, BR baffled me in 1982 and still does - Even after seeing multiple analysis posts, deep dives by viewers much more perceptive than I, and various plot elements explained in videos like this one, BR and 2049 are still too obscure for me to comprehend - but that doesn't detract from their meaning to other viewers at all. Films like these are not meant for people like me, they are meant for other audiences, i.e. those who are intellectually capable of grasping the symbolism, the interwoven plot elements, the irony, and the true meaning of the scenes that are deliberately woven into them as story elements and that is not something I can do! And I am fine with that - 2049 is a niche film and clearly I'm not in the niche.
What a thoughtful video ! Just saw the film yesterday. Yellow represented the quest for "life" for me, or at least something not robotic. At the LAPD office the yellow lights, the yellow hall way at the house of the "farmer" and the girl with the yellow t-shirt. The color was a metaphor for purity or seeking the meaning of being human.

I loved BR2049 my minor disappointment is I would've liked a bit more wonder & oddity like the eye-designer in the cold room & the toy-maker with his creations in the 1st Blade Runner. The "I'm the captain now" guy was dressed in a wife-beater. He could've been made to look a lot more interesting.
missingno the only thing I'd add is a bit longer ending, but that will be fixed with the extended edition. Also they had to cater for ordinary people too so they made it only 160 minutes, 240 minutes would be perfect
missingno not every character is a flashy designer’s nightmare. Plus simpler is better in terms of the environment. The weather is worse and it seems the unluckiest of ppl are stuck on Earth whole the rest are off world so they have to work with the dwindling resources
This sequel beautifully captured the mood of the original - darkness, loneliness, hopelessness, ultimately balanced with light, connection, and love. Edit : And let's not forget the wonderful soundtrack by Hans Zimmer, which also captured the essence of the original score by Vangelis.
I know this sounds cynical, but I think part of the reason Villeneuve took on BR 2049 was because plans were in place to do a Dune remake. If Villeneuve were to make Dune he needed to prove himself capable of handling a big budget film based on loved material, like a BR. I'm not saying Villeneuve wasn't committed to BR or selling out, and I really liked 2049. He was respectful of the original but made his BR his own. Not a bad thing I guess, since we got a great BR sequel and Villeneuve has proven he can handle a Sci-fi universe. But Dune is a giant, even bigger and more complex than BR.
Paddy Magenis this weekend i first saw Dune. Ridley Scott was right. He would have made his own star wars. The movie had interesting setting and effects. I wish he was a part of it. :)
Since Blade Runner is my all time favorite sci-fi film, I resisted watching 2049 for several years, sure I would hate it trying to take the place of the original. The Citizen Kane-like innovations to the light and visuals of the original stun me at every viewing. But - 2049 has a shocking visual beauty. The sense of loneliness created by the production design alone - devastating in its wordlessness. Only *one* humanizing personal prop in the whole film - amidst an isolation and emptiness so extreme, our protagonist is desperate to claim it . . . So many genius visuals in this film. Quite enjoyable to see your side-by-side presentations of the visual contrasts between the two films. And good words from you to deepen our awareness.
11:25 it's actually a soviet (russian/kaz) word in frame: "целина" - what is means "poorly developed but rich land resources". Then I saw film in the theater in Rus, I thought "wow, nice localization work", but now "wow, really wide production work." If you remember how poorly Hollywood work with foreign cultures and even primitive words.. it's amazing.
This film is absolutely OUSTANDING!!! Everyone old enough should go see this film. Saw it on IMAX, and worth every single penny. This is a must have for my Blu-Ray collection this Christmas.
2049 was okay but it had nothing to rival the Tears in Rain scene of the original which is pure movie magic (an element of luck) shit, honestly if the original BR didntnhave that perfect scene idk if it would even be as good of a movie or a cult classic. Its cathartic geniud and distills the themes better than any other scene in BR series.
The Tears in Snow scene is a great counter-argument to Roy Batty's bleak realization of his insignificance. In fact, Batty actually left his significant mark in the world just by saving Rick Deckard, so the fact that he died unknowing of his deed is heartbreaking and bittersweet. Tears is indistinguishable in rain, but not in snow. K is aware of his deed. He dies a fulfilled HUMAN.
My friend and I watched the original at the cinema and blew my tiny mind in 82, beautifully dark movie, and then you have one of the greatest Vangelis soundtracks of all time, I loved decards walls in his flat, and when he looks at the photo and zooms in on the photo, woooooooooow love it 😍
I loved this movie. It's a perfect bookend to the story of Blade Runner. The aesthetics of the film help define it in ways that few other movies have accomplished. A well done piece, thanks for sharing it.
I love this movie. And I watch it over and over. It looks great and feels great. It also stands up to repeated watchings, actually it reveals more the more times you watch it. And the soundtrack makes it. A class movie.
It's Star Wars coated as blade-runner plot or a typical Hollywood story, there are some things that are indeed interesting like those "revel replicants" K meets, but daddy-daughter thing? No, thanks. But it's just my opinion.
The premise they went with and the resulting screenplay are pedestrian junk. Rachael is a Nexus7 now according to 2049 (no, she was a Nexus6, they should watch the original more carefully) and she died, died I say, like a puny human, giving a childbirth. Give me a break! No imagination whatsoever. The screenplay sucked supreme and everything else suffers from it.

I am so, SO thankful Scott didn't direct it, it would've been a freaking mediocre movie. I don't trust him to direct anything lately. He may be a master of the craft, but there's sadly no chance in hell he would've done as good a job as Villeneuve.
This is true. Ridley Scott seems to be more interested in executing large-scale productions (which he's a master at) than developing plot and character-driven stories as he has done far in the past. Denis is great at that and created a world where they exist.

This movie was terrible. Im still ashamed that a masterpiece like the original Blade Runner was "replaced" by this. The music was terrible. The movie itself was slow, so slow that i was already asleep after 1 hour of nothingless. The fx??? completely dull and they never added that ambience the fx of the original added to the city and the surroundings (one of the most iconics aspects of the original film). I cant believe this movie recieved positive critics at all. What a shame.
I always felt that the "color" of the scenes represented the class divide of those specific locales. The cold, harsh hues of gray and blue represent the working class, while the lush, warm tones of gold and yellow represent the rich upper class. In both movies, it's always gold when we're around Tyrell/Wallace Corporation, companies owned by characters who are major figures in the universe. It's gray and dull whenever we're out in the slums. There's also an extreme amount of contrast used depending on the mood of the scene. Outside in the working areas, the dull colors are more foggy and clean, as the workers are left to their own devices, but in the depths of the city where it's overpopulated it's always dark and grimy - a literal and figurative oversaturation. Simultaneously, when we're out in the ruins of Las Vegas, an area that used to be populated by the rich and privileged, the yellow tones turn a harsh, distorted orange, as if this area's been distorted by the fallout. You get the sense that this was once an area where the wealthy made their stay, which is emphasized by the luxurious casino where Deckard is in hiding.
Great video! Blade Runner 2049 is the best sci-fi movie of the last few years for sure and production design -- done more with models rather than CGI -- was a huge part of it. Love the world they created and the gadgets as well as the progression toward greater dystopia in this World. And this film, i think, is very much a worthy sequel to the original.
I’ve just come across this episode, which caught my eye because I worked on it. I thought I should mention that, while some of the movie was indeed shot at Korda studios, the production was based in Origo studios , where most of the non location sets were also made.
It had its flaws, but I'm so glad it turned out as well as it did. I left the cinema feeling like Villeneuve had made the film just for me, which is a weird feeling for something made with such a big budget! Let's hope that it will continue to find fans over the years, just as the original did.

This film completely captivated me, even more so than the original. It was a visual and aural feast to experience it. Not a month goes by without me watching it again, which is very unusual for me. It is literally the only film that has ever invoked in me that feeling of being between dreaming and waking. Masterpiece.
"Brutality" is a very fitting description of Villeneuve's style.
I find it insane how clear and coherent your thoughts are only days after the release. I'm still trying to collect all of my brain after Villeneuve shattered it.
There's actually so much to process that I felt half-witted after my first viewing. I understood so much of the film but expected myself to take this much away from it. Instead I was just left dumbstruck.
Lol same here guys. I had to go back and see it one more time, i chose 4DX for the extra thrill on that one. And now my brain was way more relaxed, and the movie was so good, soo incredibly good. I'm going back to see it one more time, might have still missed something ^^.. Quite possibly actually

Okay, but what mystery is left to ponder from the story after the ending? Idk but for me I still think about the themes of the original decades later but I've mostly forgotten 2049 since I watched it. Could be I'm and old jaded cinema fan, or that fresh and unique ideas in Hollywood have run dry that even an average movie like 2049 gets so much praise by comparison to all the garbage reboots and sequels and franchises.
it annoys me that such a great film did such poorly in the box office while mindless films like transformers rake in all the cash, what is wrong with people? but I do think the marketing can be put to some blame as the trailer for 2049 makes it look like a typical action movie lol im glad i watched it anyway though

There were several walk-outs at my screening, unfortunately. In fact, someone left when there was obviously five minutes left in the film. I think that all of us who liked it should see it a few times in the theater to cover the gap! The industry has been one-sided for far too long. We need more directors like Villeneuve and Nolan who can take a huge budget and find a great balance between entertainment and heavy themes/unique approaches to form. If only audiences would allow that...
People who can't apreciate films like this are the ones who lose.

Denis has literally lived my dream. I think he handled it perfectly. His involvement of Syd Mead, and that quote on wanting him to have his direct influence on a scene that was his own, man... amazing.

This is rapidly becoming my favorite channel on TH-cam. 2049 is a masterpiece in every sense of the word, the direction, performances, cinematography, production design, score, literally every cog was perfectly in sync. And although I love the first one immensely, this film made me excited about filmmaking again.

God, I love this masterpiece. Whenever someone said: "longueurs!" I was most impressed with the creation of the world. I had so much time to contemplate the environment, the takes, the colors, the delicate acting in a brutal storyline. Director made it so well that question on comparison to the first story disappeared. Vanished, like it was never existing.

No, but it deserves to be on the same shelf with it. Along with 2001, The Original BD, and many other titans of Science Fiction Cinema. I just hate when people think that something old can’t be outclassed by something new. It’s possible. I look forward to it.

It tried too hard to look like blade runner. Like what start war force awakening does to new hope. Maybe because Ford is also in both of them... It's a shame it doesn't like like 30 years has passed. The clothing, the car, the street, the building… the only things is they removed all the Chinese character graffiti. Replaced Chinese's vendor with Indian. Coherent is one thing but lazy with little imagination is another, taking awful old plot line and putting into new movie saying it's paying tribute is just stupid.
Like street vendor doing DNA test on your wood… wearing transparent rain coats... Zoom in and out with voice is so future in the 80s, but you know we can track eye balls now right? Adding a drone on to your car is also reapply lame. Your AI girl friend is no match with my siri…

Blade Runner came out in 1982, immediately we had one side of the world saying it's a masterpiece, and the other side speaking the way you do.
Ridley Scott did Gladiator, Alien, Blade Runner, Thelma § Louise, Body of lies, Black Hawk Down, Prometheus, The Martian (etc..), now just produced Blade Runner 2049. Denis Villeneuve did Sicario, Arrival § Blade Runner 2049.
Blade Runner 2049 gets 8,2/10 on rotten tomatoes, § 8,6 on imdb, so apparently I'm not the only one liking this movie ...

astralseeker I thing is I liked the original a lot. I watched it before I went to the movie thus i felt it's too similar. It's not saying it's not a great movie. It's just I was hoping for a new take on the cyberpunk than the 80s cyberpunk.
We hasn't got any new take on the future for quiet a while. With all the new advanced technology we have in the 2017, apart from the flying cars and the funnel from gundam most of the things are just not impressive.
Also I really don't like all the Vegas part. I know many people think that's impressive but from zoom in, the bee, the entering, the attitude, the fight, the fall, the really bad stage, the drink, the blowing up of the wheel, the death of AI. I really don't like much of it...
The part I like is the farm, the apartment, AI at home, the snow, the street, the rain, at least he removed those neon lights. The dark street vendor and the crazy hooker. The hate on Skinner is there but not strong enough. Also the big city view looks way too simple… not enough variety compare the original.
However I do appreciate their hard work, it's still pretty epic.
I don't think 2049 was his best film, I think I like Prisoners a little more and Arrival was also fantastic, but 2049 was incredible. The only beef I had with the film was (Spoilers)
They dedicated so much screentime into convincing us (the audience) that K was the replicant offspring. They devoted almost two hours to that, built up the tension, had an amazing time getting there, and then it was "oh... no you're not the offspring.. but we will reveal her at the perfect time!!!" and then not only is she never revealed to the world but the ramifications are never felt.
Other than that, it was downright awesome.
Production design is one aspect of the movie making process I constantly, and mistakenly, overlook. Thank you for for crafting such an insightful view into why I am so wrong in not examining such an integral part of films.
I hear you. At the same time great production design should be just absorbed and not garishly slap you in the face like 'look how spectacular I am'. BR 2049 succeeded having stunning art & settings without imposing.
God, I never realized how much yellow there was outside of the Vegas shots. Even the embryonic sludge on the barren and therefore short lived replicant. All in all, it had a beautiful, but unnatural look. Almost sulfurous. As if the world was chemically sick. It worked. I was blown away by the film. I went to see it on a cold December or January night by myself, because I didn't want to share my intimate connection to it and the original with anyone else. And I knew it might rip me up a little. And after, when I emerged into the late night, it began to snow. I sat in my car and cried for a few minutes, then left the abandoned mall feeling stunned and a little grieving. I cannot completely express how much I love the original, it is a touchstone from my youth, but the sequel left me feeling that Villaneuve was a genius. His film wasn't just fan service, it was a true continuation of a masterwork. I cannot wait for Rendezvous With Rama. It just may be Denis Villeneuve's 2001 A Space Odyssey.

When I saw the sequel for the first time, I recognised the script, which I had read, from the original movie, for the scene they never used. In that, Decard (not Kay) removes the replicant’s jaw, rather than scanning his eye, but it’s otherwise the same. I knew then that this was respecting the source material and that it was going to be good. I just didn’t yet know that it was going to be the best sequel I’d ever seen. This guy really knows his stuff and, as you say, it’s a pleasure to learn new things about the crafting of this masterpiece. The director should run classes on how to make the perfect sequel. 👍

As someone who has just shot his first short film it is so inspiring to me to witness an established filmmaker such as Denis yet again put so much passion and creativity into a film.... in this day and age of reboots, cinematic stagnant universes....here we have a legitimate, epic, creative sequel that has invigorated, inspired me in ways I did not imagine to push myself as a visual artist...thanks you cinema tyler and thank you Denis.

I don't agree. Bowie would "take you out of" the film.. like Sting did in Dune.. Every time you see Sting in Dune you say to yourself "oh look, there's Sting!" and now I'm out of the film and not immersed like I should be..
Bowie was too famous. Peter Jackson was going to use him as Elrond, but decided against it for that reason.

I really love how Blade Runner 2049 doesn't just maintain the status quo and keep the universe roughly the same as the original, like The Force Awakens did. I was so skeptical of this film when I first heard about it but it ended up as one of the best sequels of all time, right up there with Empire Strikes back. It completely captured the tone of the first film while expanding on the world, themes and story in a sensible fashion without going overboard. You can't really ask for much more than that. Bring on DUNE!
The script, the performances, the look and feel, the soundtrack, the story, the world building, the meditations and the fast and slow of it, the ambiguities, the story, just everything about it respected the source material whilst offering something new, to come out flawless. It’s a masterpiece. Now, the two movies sit together as a perfect collection for a whole day of cinema joy.

I am somewhat relieved to all the response I have heard for Blade Runner 2049. It is my favorite film of all time! And like many others, I was sceptical and worried that a sequel would ruin probably, in my mind, one of the greatest films ever made! I have not seen the film yet, but I am seriously looking forward to seeing it! I first watched Blade Runner in the UK on TV in 1984. The title of the film intrigued me at the age of 10 and my parents TV was broken at the time, but I figured out you could still record a movie onto a video recorder (VCR)!
I have loved this film for 33 years! And have been fortunate enough to have worked on the production of Blade Runner 2049.

Blade Runner is my favorite movie of all time, indeed, at the risk of sounding stupid, it's sacred to me. I got mad when I heard they were making a sequel to it, even hoped they would fail.
Got to say, nobody cares about my opinion, but it is a worthy storytelling progression. The world is even more gone, melancholic, dying. People are becoming extinct. Natural selection is being replaced, by our artificial selection.

Literally my favorite film of the past decade. When you see how much Ridley Scott has ruined the Aliens legacy I am thankful he had minimal involvement. I love the fact they didn't make a massive thing about the "is he a replicant?" Deckard question. Complete restraint and control - I can't wait for Dune but no doubt another overlooked masterpiece in the making?

When I first saw Alien and Blade Runner on the big screen, there was no internet fan content for people like me to soak up, because there was no internet. There was an expensive, large format picture book which contained Alien stills and production art. I snapped that book up at the local science fiction bookshop immediately. Your video satisfies the same need as that book. This is how fans learn what went into our favorite science fiction films in 2017. Thanks so much!

Great video, man. And let me just say it here: let the beauty of this film be a lesson to filmmakers today: *get away from CGI* - go back to building sets and effects practically (at least for the most part) - when these things are done *in* camera, an audience has a deeper emotional connection to them (whether they realize it or not). It matters. And again: practical effects when done well - LAST. The original "Blade Runner", to this day, still looks incredible. Carpenter's "The Thing" still looks incredible. God bless them for doing so much of the film practically, as it was the one thing I was hugely concerned about with a sequel - that the tactility of the world would be lost and betrayed by simply being generated on a laptop. Good for them.
Ryan Gosling's quote on the vicarious appeal of bleak science fiction may just be my favorite piece of actor insight.

The yellow-orangish I think relates more to the womb. In the apartment of the Replicant, he will come back and slice (the leitmotif of provoked birth) the plastic door. This is his journey, to birth himself. In the flooding scene, when he starts fighting the Kung Fu girl, this demonic mother archetype killing all others, they fall in the water, close to the same orange light. It has a soothing quality, embryo like.
Hit the nail on the head, man. I was thinking the same thing before my second watch. The themes of childbirth are evident. *Slight spoilers*
The C-section and Coco saying it was a clean cut, no struggle. You see it again with the new model, then again at the police station and finally the last battle.
Almost everything is related to Birth - and it is a continuation of Arrival's theme.
The repeated motif of two pillars on the side of the screen reminding of the position a woman gives birth.

The dead dry land of course (the waves coming to crush the wall would have been great, it is just as great left to the imagination)
Numeral terminology regarding birth are employed throughouh the movie "you kept a bomb from going off", many I don't remember.
(There's a slight touch on fertility with the dead tree, the Replicant guarding seeds, etc. Also, the horse is a sun symbol which does relate to birth - sun and birth are like penis and vagina)

These are all FANTASTIC and insightful facts and connections! One thing I noticed watching the movie is how many shots feature characters staged in front of windows, or are shot from outside buildings and we see their actions thru the window. For me, it showed how isolated characters felt from the rest of the world, especially for K & Stelline. In any case, great video!

2049 was honestly a much better movie than the original, and one of the all-time greatest sequels ever made. I've seen it three times now and have gleaned new information and details every single time. I've never been able to dedicate 9 hours to a single film over one weekend before but I have with 2049. It's Villeneuve's magnum opus, and the best movie of this century so far. It's just a travesty that it's such a massive financial bomb. This is the kind of movie that deserves success because it's so rare to see a film this big have such a massive amount of care and love poured into it by literally everyone involved in its entire production. Amazing movie.

We are clearly part of the same choir here so I would like to share this. I just saw the film at a matenee in the middle of week. I am an American expatriate living here in Copenhagen Denmark. So the theatre was understandably almost empty maybe 30 Danes and me. We, all of us, applauded together as the film ended.
Everyone needs to watch 2049 now! You won't regret it.

You’re doing important work. Usually, to understand a film, we look at what is most noticeable but by taking a look at the “back door” (production and all that stuff) you raise questions and points that greatly enhance the understanding one has of the film. Thumbs up
One of the greatest feats of 2049 was that you had entirely different directors/creative staff and cast (save Harrison Ford) but he still managed to create a film that was just as good (if not better) than the original and captured the same feel. It would have been all too easy to turn it into some J.J. Abrams turdfest.
It is a shame that the movie never saw the success that it should have because you rarely see a movie of that caliber come around.

I fell in love with the first Blade Runner movie and I was excited when 2049 came about. It is one of those films you can watch over and over. I love the worlds they are in and the music it moves you. I don't know why it didn't do well in theaters.

It was shot on an Alexa with Master Primes.
That's a miniature effects shot. The DSLR is probably just being used there for being small enough to fit into tight spaces, and because the highly controlled VFX environment doesn't need the specific massive exposure latitude of an Alexa.

They might’ve used very long exposures in still mode since it’s a motion control take. The reason for long exposures is because a small aperture will give you longer depth of field such that you can’t tell it’s a small miniature. And since it takes a long time to expose you might as well use a still camera that can shoot in higher resolution.
It’s a miniature scene which was shot like a time lapse, not in video mode. Just like how they did most of the original Star Wars vfx

What a fantastic 20mins of the breakdown of one of my favourite sequels of all time that functions as a stand alone giant in it's own right thanks to Denis Villenuve, Roger Deakins and an amazing production design. Thank you for this little gem in helping me understand how everything from cinematography, production design, costumes, sets etc. is linked and symbiotic to the rich, lived in reality of this film while paying homage to the original. Truly, a masterpeice of storytelling.

Popular myth has it that Scott's vision of Bladerunner was inspired by the night time chemo-industrial landscape of Teeside in the northeast of England.
I'm from the area and I can imagine that it would have, the skyline was permanently illuminated by flares and lights from the ICI chemical plants and local steel works (which actually featured in Atonement), it was quite an eerie and emotive sight.
Might also be a load of bollocks.

My favourite scene in the whole film was the trash dumping ship. Idk why but I’m totally obsessed with it. It’s says so many things about the world in such a short amount of time.
Oh man if Bowie had been Wallace instead of Leto that would have been incredible. I felt Leto (and the dialogue for the character) were a major weak point in the film.
TedWillingham I concur Wallace was the perfect contrast to the fatherly creator that Tyrell was. Though Bowie as that in a final role would’ve been great

I watched 2049 several times and no audience can fail to be impressed by the nearly seamless transition in look, feel, and a nearly complete transition from the original 1982 film to 2049. Creating, or re-creating a film world that audience has already seen - and no doubt has expectations for - must without a doubt be one of the most difficult and costly production effects it is possible to do. And the production team on 2049 did an utterly amazing job in every scene - every bit of the movie's budget is on screen throughout the entire film and 2049 is worth watching for that alone

Villineuve also did too good a job at duplicating the mystifying plot of the original. I will not pretend that I understood very much of either film, BR baffled me in 1982 and still does - Even after seeing multiple analysis posts, deep dives by viewers much more perceptive than I, and various plot elements explained in videos like this one, BR and 2049 are still too obscure for me to comprehend - but that doesn't detract from their meaning to other viewers at all.
Films like these are not meant for people like me, they are meant for other audiences, i.e. those who are intellectually capable of grasping the symbolism, the interwoven plot elements, the irony, and the true meaning of the scenes that are deliberately woven into them as story elements and that is not something I can do! And I am fine with that - 2049 is a niche film and clearly I'm not in the niche.

What a thoughtful video ! Just saw the film yesterday. Yellow represented the quest for "life" for me, or at least something not robotic. At the LAPD office the yellow lights, the yellow hall way at the house of the "farmer" and the girl with the yellow t-shirt. The color was a metaphor for purity or seeking the meaning of being human.

I loved BR2049 my minor disappointment is I would've liked a bit more wonder & oddity like the eye-designer in the cold room & the toy-maker with his creations in the 1st Blade Runner. The "I'm the captain now" guy was dressed in a wife-beater. He could've been made to look a lot more interesting.
missingno the only thing I'd add is a bit longer ending, but that will be fixed with the extended edition. Also they had to cater for ordinary people too so they made it only 160 minutes, 240 minutes would be perfect

This sequel beautifully captured the mood of the original - darkness, loneliness, hopelessness, ultimately balanced with light, connection, and love.
Edit : And let's not forget the wonderful soundtrack by Hans Zimmer, which also captured the essence of the original score by Vangelis.

I know this sounds cynical, but I think part of the reason Villeneuve took on BR 2049 was because plans were in place to do a Dune remake. If Villeneuve were to make Dune he needed to prove himself capable of handling a big budget film based on loved material, like a BR.
I'm not saying Villeneuve wasn't committed to BR or selling out, and I really liked 2049. He was respectful of the original but made his BR his own.
Not a bad thing I guess, since we got a great BR sequel and Villeneuve has proven he can handle a Sci-fi universe. But Dune is a giant, even bigger and more complex than BR.

Since Blade Runner is my all time favorite sci-fi film, I resisted watching 2049 for several years, sure I would hate it trying to take the place of the original. The Citizen Kane-like innovations to the light and visuals of the original stun me at every viewing.
But - 2049 has a shocking visual beauty. The sense of loneliness created by the production design alone - devastating in its wordlessness.
Only *one* humanizing personal prop in the whole film - amidst an isolation and emptiness so extreme, our protagonist is desperate to claim it . . .
So many genius visuals in this film.
Quite enjoyable to see your side-by-side presentations of the visual contrasts between the two films. And good words from you to deepen our awareness.
11:25 it's actually a soviet (russian/kaz) word in frame: "целина" - what is means "poorly developed but rich land resources". Then I saw film in the theater in Rus, I thought "wow, nice localization work", but now "wow, really wide production work."
If you remember how poorly Hollywood work with foreign cultures and even primitive words.. it's amazing.
This film is absolutely OUSTANDING!!! Everyone old enough should go see this film.

2049 was okay but it had nothing to rival the Tears in Rain scene of the original which is pure movie magic (an element of luck) shit, honestly if the original BR didntnhave that perfect scene idk if it would even be as good of a movie or a cult classic. Its cathartic geniud and distills the themes better than any other scene in BR series.
The Tears in Snow scene is a great counter-argument to Roy Batty's bleak realization of his insignificance. In fact, Batty actually left his significant mark in the world just by saving Rick Deckard, so the fact that he died unknowing of his deed is heartbreaking and bittersweet. Tears is indistinguishable in rain, but not in snow. K is aware of his deed. He dies a fulfilled HUMAN.
My friend and I watched the original at the cinema and blew my tiny mind in 82, beautifully dark movie, and then you have one of the greatest Vangelis soundtracks of all time, I loved decards walls in his flat, and when he looks at the photo and zooms in on the photo, woooooooooow love it 😍

I loved this movie. It's a perfect bookend to the story of Blade Runner. The aesthetics of the film help define it in ways that few other movies have accomplished. A well done piece, thanks for sharing it.

I love this movie. And I watch it over and over. It looks great and feels great. It also stands up to repeated watchings, actually it reveals more the more times you watch it. And the soundtrack makes it. A class movie.
I think original Blade Runner world looks much better and the movie as a whole is better as well, but 2049 is okay.
It's Star Wars coated as blade-runner plot or a typical Hollywood story, there are some things that are indeed interesting like those "revel replicants" K meets, but daddy-daughter thing? No, thanks. But it's just my opinion.
The premise they went with and the resulting screenplay are pedestrian junk. Rachael is a Nexus7 now according to 2049 (no, she was a Nexus6, they should watch the original more carefully) and she died, died I say, like a puny human, giving a childbirth. Give me a break! No imagination whatsoever. The screenplay sucked supreme and everything else suffers from it.

I am so, SO thankful Scott didn't direct it, it would've been a freaking mediocre movie. I don't trust him to direct anything lately. He may be a master of the craft, but there's sadly no chance in hell he would've done as good a job as Villeneuve.
This is true. Ridley Scott seems to be more interested in executing large-scale productions (which he's a master at) than developing plot and character-driven stories as he has done far in the past. Denis is great at that and created a world where they exist.
They should work together and let each others strength do the job

This movie was terrible. Im still ashamed that a masterpiece like the original Blade Runner was "replaced" by this. The music was terrible. The movie itself was slow, so slow that i was already asleep after 1 hour of nothingless. The fx??? completely dull and they never added that ambience the fx of the original added to the city and the surroundings (one of the most iconics aspects of the original film). I cant believe this movie recieved positive critics at all. What a shame.
I always felt that the "color" of the scenes represented the class divide of those specific locales. The cold, harsh hues of gray and blue represent the working class, while the lush, warm tones of gold and yellow represent the rich upper class. In both movies, it's always gold when we're around Tyrell/Wallace Corporation, companies owned by characters who are major figures in the universe. It's gray and dull whenever we're out in the slums. There's also an extreme amount of contrast used depending on the mood of the scene. Outside in the working areas, the dull colors are more foggy and clean, as the workers are left to their own devices, but in the depths of the city where it's overpopulated it's always dark and grimy - a literal and figurative oversaturation. Simultaneously, when we're out in the ruins of Las Vegas, an area that used to be populated by the rich and privileged, the yellow tones turn a harsh, distorted orange, as if this area's been distorted by the fallout. You get the sense that this was once an area where the wealthy made their stay, which is emphasized by the luxurious casino where Deckard is in hiding.

Great video! Blade Runner 2049 is the best sci-fi movie of the last few years for sure and production design -- done more with models rather than CGI -- was a huge part of it. Love the world they created and the gadgets as well as the progression toward greater dystopia in this World. And this film, i think, is very much a worthy sequel to the original.

I’ve just come across this episode, which caught my eye because I worked on it. I thought I should mention that, while some of the movie was indeed shot at Korda studios, the production was based in Origo studios , where most of the non location sets were also made.
It had its flaws, but I'm so glad it turned out as well as it did. I left the cinema feeling like Villeneuve had made the film just for me, which is a weird feeling for something made with such a big budget! Let's hope that it will continue to find fans over the years, just as the original did.
2049 is an astounding motion picture. Watched it three times. Hopefully, a full theatrical re-release is coming at some time in the future.

This film completely captivated me, even more so than the original. It was a visual and aural feast to experience it. Not a month goes by without me watching it again, which is very unusual for me. It is literally the only film that has ever invoked in me that feeling of being between dreaming and waking. Masterpiece.
