Gosha Rubchinskiy’s brand is too expensive for almost ALL Russian young people! It's so hypocritical to call this video "Inside Gosha Rubchinskiy’s Post-Soviet Generation" - I agree with previous comments - it's just a bunch of hipsters The video looks nice though
Oh CapiTen.... Every "new" style has been cycled from some influence in the past - it's 2018. So typical for people who's done something before to jump on others who've been influenced by it. And rather than take it as flattery, you criticize. Keep doing whatever you feel is right for you kids, don't worry about what others think like Capiten Cringe over here.
i think the vision is reinventing sportswear from soviet era, regardless if whether you can afford gosha’s brand or not, he has shown the world a brand new take on sportswear in fashion, which you can get into with vintage sportswear too, not just head to toe gosha rubchinisky
I feel like this documentary, brilliant as it is, creates a false impression with non-Russians. I mean, Rubchinskiy is heard of, he is famous or notorious depending on the way you look at him, but his culture is merely a small part of Russian youth. I personally don't know anyone who wears these clothes or similar ones, people around me and in cities I have visited mostly wear H&M, Zara and other mass-produced stuff. There are two reasons for that, the first is that not all Russian youngsters are nostalgic about the '90s (I, for instance, was born in 1994 and don't remember much of the '90s), and the second one is... well... Rubchinskiy's clothes are expensive to say the least. I personally wouldn't pay, like, 250 bucks for a pair of jeans that looks like my mom could wear them when she was my age. If I ever feel like looking like a blast from the past I could simply rummage through my mom's old clothes, not buy ones with a designer label on them. Just my opinion.
well, what a surprise! cutting edge fashion, modern art and techno music is not what every single person in Russia likes? No shit! most people are basic and they only wear H&M but hey, there is also art and progressive people who create cool things and enjoy underground/not basic/modern fashion. That is why they tell their stories and videos are made about them, not about millions of basic bitches geez what a stupid irrelevant comment you wrote (I don't want to be offensive but this is just truly a bad comment and why so many likes? geez, people)
Yeah, thanks for expressing your opinion, just like I expressed mine (which you deemed stupid and irrelevant, kudos for that as well). I just mentioned that's not everyone's style but you insist that I somehow deny people their creativity.
As a graphic design student from Holland I find that a lot of youth from my country (and my school, specifically) look to Russian culture for inspiration. I think Russia is very forward thinking and I predict it will influence a lot of fashion and design in the future. There's just this raw, anti-conformist edge to it that is extremely appealing.
I've met him at Dover Street Market before for the first PACCBET capsule collection. He's a very calm and peaceful guy, he signed my gosha x vans, my paccbet hoodie and my paccbet deck.
Hmm... As someone who actively witnessed the energy of '90s raves being a teenager back then and looking at this "post-soviet rave youth" (while also travelled extensively through eastern block countries nowdays), I can't escape from the feeling of Gosha faking it to the maximum. He uses some of his suburban youth fetishes to create actually a very good hommage, but for me it's just an hommage with a contemporary twist to that past time. There is no real underground anymore, and be it Russia or Ukraine, the world is too connected today to have a real and honest rebelling youth, which I think is necessary for the underground. What are this guys fighting for, or against? Just look at them dancing. Cute, but no authenticity in them. From my point of view this is just a typical remake/recycle/revive loop that we mostly can't escape from in contemporary art or design. I'm not saying that there's no more "rave" youth anymore, I just don't feel any authenticity or energy in any of them that was really present in the nineties. This is just an external simulation of the old form, but unfortunately with no real inner substance anymore. I'm not being nostagic for the old days though, I'm being nostalgic for the substantiality and the true cultural avant-garde that subcultures brought with them.
Totally hit the nail on the head. I agree, the problem with connectivity is that there cannot be an underground because an underground needs a kind of exclusivity and , to be frank, it required you to make an effort - to go to rave, tune into a pirate radio station that broadcasted only at the weekends, get a train to the big city and find that small shop in a market selling clothes, to find the record shop that had the music that you couldn't hear anywhere else and be confronted with a hungover DJ behind the counter who would ignore you.. Now you can access culture from anywhere form your armchair. Great in one way, but culture is just doomed to be ' stylish' and safe and referrencial. Thank god i was alive in the 90's to experience it, and Im also glad i can access its ghosts from the comfort of my computer on Monday night after work in 2018.
There are event planners who try to organise underground sort of secretive raves like there was one out in some field and you had to be accepted to go and get a bus that took you there (in my city of Manchester), there’s some event planners who plan secret sort of parties but it’s obviously marketed online on Facebook or Twitter but they are some pretty good replications, you can say people perfect their craft in what they do now when they try to recreate an experience. But I get what you mean, I feel this way with music artists today, no true musicians anymore, just a load of people on the internet connecting to the music in this way and not actually part of a culture who lived that genre and was true to that genre or sub genre, but some are super talented (some acclaimed ones to moderately well known to lesser known ones) and likewise perfected a craft although doesn’t feel as authentic. It’s a grey area at times what connectivity can provide, but we are living it whatever it is (my generation) but I can tell it’s not like the 90s or 80s. I think with connectivity too, it’s all about exposure and those are the artists gets the credit, some will never get the credit they deserve simply because they don’t know a thing or two about how to market themselves. With connectivity, freedom of speech becomes a little more restricted too, that’s one major flaw that seems to have naturally filtered through this partially press/government controlled entity where it’s establishments have to succumb and regulate terms that adhere to the current political climate enforced upon them.
There’s places that ran through the 90s that are getting shut down more often, but I think culture is thriving everywhere just not in a way that is considered nostalgic or feels as organic as once existed because the internet takes that edge away and is now a necessity for any project to function and the youth is mainly the reason for that because the youth not only depend on the Internet but grew up on it, but alas there are people such as myself who probably understand that and accept that. I think you’re right though, that particular lawless rave culture is dead and the information is not being communicated or fed in the same way as it once was way back when so it’s not possible to experience it in a way which was more possible when there was more disconnection amongst society, which in a way proved to be more progressive in terms of true and authentic avant-garde. I think people are more snobby now, and it doesn't help with brands like this being most appealing to the youth and the economy doesn't work in progression's favour, everyone I know is busy trying to make ends meet whilst at the same time trying to enjoy themselves which is why many opt for Uni as you have a freedom once in your life to spend irresponsibly and never pay it back (or at least that what it is to some) and obviously amongst students forms a rave culture, quite a strong rave scene here in the UK and from my experience it's been good w good experiences with all sorts of people and you still get low key raves or student organised ones driven by house music and drugs, except technology changes the way information is fed and the way people enjoy these moments. Obviously its nothing as insane as the 90s, with police raids and all that stuff as everything is regulated by the councils now, it was never going to be the same even if there was no internet involved due to property regulations. There are still minor organisations out there who try to facilitate off-the-radar raves, it of course is a lot more challenging these days since its a lot easier to trace information and there's less abandoned buildings to hop in as the councils try to slowly sterilise the landscape. There are lots of big houses on the outskirts of the city occupied by students which get used for raves and they can get really creative with the setups.
Mihail Mitov this isn't what the actual "post Soviet" youth look like, these people are just дебилы trying to make money, by saying that this is what the Russian youth looks like to get Slavaboos to buy overly expensive crap, that makes you look like a Soviet school boy.
to see people strive and prosper in creativity is something really inspiring and to see different regions of the world become more involved with art and fashion is maddd and i think creative people all over the world could learn a thing or two from eastern european and russian culture and history
I just love the skin head look, is a combination of punk meanwhile stating a fact that is fashion forward without loosing inspiration on the skate vibe.
Well when I was in High School (1999 - 2004, in the Netherlands, home of the gabbers) the skinheads/gabbers always fought the skaters, so they where in no way inspired by them

Gosha was talking about the current moment, because it was during his work that the door to the international world opened for Russians. He didn't want to think much about the past and the future, because now is the best time to change his future through creativity. That was Gosha's idea. "It's boring to always look into the past" - meaning that a turning point has come in Russia and it's time to play by the new rules and show your art to the whole world, because previously no one except Gosha could do it.
I don't how you guys do that, but all of your videos are so inspiring!! thank you. when i'm depressed or lonely I always come to your channel ( grace neutral series especially) and I feel so blessed. thank you, so so much. really.
This is so fucking cool! Thank you, I-D, for making this film. You've managed to show Russian contemporary culture as it is. It's so damn right that you've shown Gosha not only as a fashion designer, but as a massive social influencer. It is good to see kids excepting soviet past and being optimistic about their future.
That man "IS culture"? Lmao I'm russian, never heard of him. Surely 99% people I've seen in my entire life never heard of him too. that shit is not about youth or generation, it's about rich youth that doesn't know everyday struggles nor history of Soviet Union and thinks it's rad without wanting to have any real concept. Just a cool facade is enough for them
well said. I like Gosha because anything pushing Russian influence to the world is good but lets be honest he's basically just selling the edgy 90s slav look to american hypebeasts and pretentious rich kids who would've made fun of you for dressing like this only a few years ago. it's very cringe to us but to the west it's something new i guess. I'm not about to spend $1000 to dress like my dad lol
@@SI-cd7xs Its not Gosha's fault. I genuinely love his idea and concept and what he's doing, I feel really comfortable in his clothes and I like the way they look, but yes the hypebeasts are annoying. Gosha didn't wake up and think "How can I sell clothes to rich American kids?" He had his own vision and hypebeasts just jumped onto it without a care for the actual culture or what he's about.
These "designers" all act like they were a part of the street culture back in the 90s. But it is just too obvious that they were not. You don't want to be too involved in Russia's 90-s street culture too much, because there's a high possibility that you are going to end up being killed, going to jail or becoming a drug-addict. The truth is, they are not even a part of modern street culture, so they don't really understand its swag. But cudos to Rubchinsky, he makes a shit-ton of money out of rich kids trying to look cool and "hood" while wearing super expensive clothing .
Wow, really? Close friends of Gosha working as art director and main stylist of Vetements and Balenciaga made something similar? No way, who could have thought. Look up for Lotta Volkova, the person behind all 3 of this brands.
as gosha said his clothes are inspired by what the people around him are wearing, a reflection of their current style zeitgeist which is a combination of thrift store clothes, 90s nostalgia, styling and attitude, so if you're unable to get gosha just hit up a second hand store and see what you can put together
Super important to understand how misleading this video is. Yes art is to be enjoyed and shared but this video only shows people who are trying to sell, sell, sell. You can experience art without having to be a extroverted, capitalist entrepreneur. In that sense I find this video to be propaganda for the brands/business-people in the video. I'm British but I hope anyone watching this can understand that sub-culture is not inherently consumerist. As impressive as the production of this video is, it showcases people hijacking sub-culture for a profit. And my Russian friends tell me that in (the real) Russia, you can't make money without being corrupt to some level, so this just feels so inauthentic. Maybe if this video was titled something about young Russian entrepreneurs trying to make it in a capitalist world then it could be more accurate, but please don't include a photoshoot mock-up of a rave scene and call it authentic sub-culture.
can someone explain me what is new here? i see these clothes everywhere, its not creativity, its the same global hipster trend. superficial . using some kind of weed reference to name a brand .. wow unique. cmon
I like Gosha because anything pushing Russian influence to the world is good but to be honest he's basically just selling the edgy 90s slav look to american hypebeasts and pretentious rich kids who would've looked down on you in the 90s for dressing like this. it's very cringe to us but to the west it's something new i guess. I'm not about to spend $1000 to dress like my dad lol
El Imperio every generation thinks its unique.. every generation believes they will improve the world...and every generation(in the west) becomes less cultured
Wow you are dumb, this is the first generation in Russia truly free from the massive oppression on the Soviet Union. With pain comes creativity, these kids are amazing and VERY unique fuck yoself
Why I feel like this 'youth' is too pretentious? I mean Gosha is FEELING all the stuff that he is creating and this "arty" boys and girls just nodding their head to him, not knowing what he's trying to say. Shit, they are barely born in 90's. I dont wanna say that they CAN'T understand, but bloody hell, I think they are not even trying.
This is fantastic. This is real progress, not technically but in culture, in the youth of a new nation, which is worth so much more. And right now, it seems that even that little glimmer of hope will get muffled by the renewed conflict between the West and Russia..
*makes a brand based on young people for young people*
*too expensive for any young people to buy*
YES
FUCKING TRUE MATE(((
dumb comment if the brand was cheap it wouldnt have the same impact
The irony 🤣
Im 14 and if Im working its okay to pay the price fr. You must to feel the vibe to understand the prices and accepting them.

Gosha Rubchinsky's brand produces expensive versions of cheap clothing of Turkish and Chinese origin, popular in Russia in the 90s

thank you for the beautiful video
Gosha was talking about the current moment, because it was during his work that the door to the international world opened for Russians. He didn't want to think much about the past and the future, because now is the best time to change his future through creativity. That was Gosha's idea. "It's boring to always look into the past" - meaning that a turning point has come in Russia and it's time to play by the new rules and show your art to the whole world, because previously no one except Gosha could do it.
Yeah
eighties nineties styles were so new when he invented them

One of the best episodes, thanks!
im so glad you guys uploaded this, it really helped me
great work with the captions being white :/
Tanaka Parayiwa And super tiny! It's hard to read unless you're on the comp or have a big ass phone... 😜
Yea that's really stupid
im on a small iphone 4 and read them just fine
need to start doing white subs inside a black frame, especially with the 90's being all the rage these days

whats that broad font at 0:30 called?
I would love to move to Russia and start modeling , honestly they have a unique style of modeling which interests me ...

Great video, you may shoot one for the situation in Balkans, Sofia, BG too ;)
I don't how you guys do that, but all of your videos are so inspiring!! thank you.
when i'm depressed or lonely I always come to your channel ( grace neutral series especially) and I feel so blessed.
thank you, so so much. really.
love these little documentaries...
i live in Slovakia and there's like nothing similar to this.... heeelp !
Tschekoslowakei has a lot of Russian influence . for better or worse. But do tell.
Slovakia? You mean Upper Hungary?
Hungary? You mean Southern Finland?
But this is great. You do not need similarity, just go your own way.

Russian living in Germany here. I think its so cool i want so awesome clothes too.
But im a poor student BUT IM A FUCKING RUSSIAN RRAAAWWWW
Daria Shilenkova if the soviet union would not existed russia would be a monrachie and a 3rd world country ...
Pretty sure, not even 10% of these models know about soviets history including me

3 years later, thanks man
Really good video, thank you i-D ;D
That man "IS culture"? Lmao I'm russian, never heard of him. Surely 99% people I've seen in my entire life never heard of him too. that shit is not about youth or generation, it's about rich youth that doesn't know everyday struggles nor history of Soviet Union and thinks it's rad without wanting to have any real concept. Just a cool facade is enough for them
lmao
AkaneTm lol
dude send me a pm cuz i dunno how to do it! would LOVE to discuss this video with a ruskiy
Gosha didn't wake up and think "How can I sell clothes to rich American kids?" He had his own vision and hypebeasts just jumped onto it without a care for the actual culture or what he's about.

well done video especially the musical selection is mindblowing!!! Pavel is such a genius!!!!
"to end up being killed, going to jail or becoming a drug-addict." - absolutelly retarded comment
lol the Styles are older
They definitely did not grow up with ith
Where can I find the song at the beginning/from 13:45? I heard it's called XFaw - Arm Industrial but I can't find it anywhere.
they all look like vetements model
Wow, really? Close friends of Gosha working as art director and main stylist of Vetements and Balenciaga made something similar? No way, who could have thought.
Look up for Lotta Volkova, the person behind all 3 of this brands.
This is really good, beautiful imagery!

I’m from Africa and Gosha’s making a name for himself all the way here in our street culture. He’s too good
Kedr's music is really nice. Dive into her bandcamp if you like electronica

as gosha said his clothes are inspired by what the people around him are wearing, a reflection of their current style zeitgeist which is a combination of thrift store clothes, 90s nostalgia, styling and attitude, so if you're unable to get gosha just hit up a second hand store and see what you can put together
It’s been an honor gosha

One of the greatest contemporary designer brands. I don't get the hate
Such inspiration! Love this guy and all his collaboration
The photograph was serving editorial looks, love it.
This really touched and inspired me. Love the art and the hidden agenda behind this new wave.
can someone explain me what is new here? i see these clothes everywhere, its not creativity, its the same global hipster trend. superficial . using some kind of weed reference to name a brand .. wow unique.
Generation blah blah, generation blah blah, I think our generation blah blah.
This. They think that their generation is unique but it is illusion. Every generation wants to be unique...
Every generation is unique.
Finn Pitt Armstrong "these kids" your talking about the kids in the video not an entire generation
Can anyone tell me what the song at the beginning and end is please???
