Yesss, was keen to see how the bender goes! Such a unique design for a lure. Great quick review, Shroom! Keen to see how the you go with the Berkley Pro-Tech Surface Popper 50mm next!
You should try some of the bigger bent minnows over the sand flats for monster flathead , you will need a longer faster action rod and use 20lb leader mainly to prevent you sending the lure into orbit if you get a wind knot. This technique is better in spring through summer and great on kingfish as well .
Thanks Mark! Pretty tough out there fishing-wise and the rock was pretty tough and hard too haha. I'm pleased that you enjoyed that bit because that was the intended plan. I hope everyone had a hearty laugh at that!
Thank you Anthony! Yep, it was akin to a carthartic release after hours of grinding when it seemed hopeless. Nice, the OSP's are the originals and should work very well! 😍
Good stuff mate, was really keen on purchasing this exact same lure and putting some assist hooks on to chase whiting, I think you have just convinced me.
Glad I could help Warren. I've been keen to do a bit of surface fishing this next month or so. Those assist hooks certainly help a lot but they do reduce the visual aspect of the topwater smash but some days they won't touch strictly surface
Hi mate. Love your work. Fishing can be like you experienced today. Another day the fish may smash them. I would like you to try double tail Mister Twister soft plastic in yellow it was deadly in the eighties on flathead.
I find you do have to be patient with those types of lures Shroom . And thats hard for me mate , i like to feel my lures work , so its hard to dead stick them . 👍🎣
Hey Shroom, I've been using fluro leader for SP but I wanted to make the transition to using top water hard bodies. Do you recommend using mono for leader seeing how it floats rather than fluro? Cheers
I use fluoro 90% of time (because I'm lazy) and often because it's a change of plan to use surface. Mono works well, fluoro will drag the lure down a bit and you'll have to know when it's having too much of an impact.
@@ShroomFishingAppreciated the quick response my bro! I'm probably overthinking it but I like to leave no room for error lol.. Nonetheless Ty again & I'm a big fan of your vids man bless💙
Hey mate really getting into surface bream fishing, i've used slippery dogs and suga pens in the 58s. I noticed that you mentioned using poppers, what poppers do you use for bream? keep up the great vids!
Thanks Connor! I've used various poppers but there's one off the top my mind I have fond memories using and that's the Atomic Pop 50 in Ghost Green Shad 🔥
Haha Petoz, yep I find surface fishing needs a lot of confidence and patience to use on some days. Some days, one cast is enough to decide that it ain't working but it's really fun when it does! 😀
Sweet as bud, i got the orange shrimp the other day but havn't tried it yet, very surprised you got something top water this time of year, think i'll be getting that colour as well, lol
Thanks mate! I think the waterway is one big rain period away from shutting down the surface bite for good haha. Very tough at the moment, at least for bread and butter. The pelagic fish are still tuned on surface but up to chance encounters!
@@ShroomFishing hahaha, -1 here this morning, i will have to travel north to fish i think, the south coast isn't real good in the cold months, lol. Winter is when hobby number 2 kicks in for me coming from the southern highlands, hopefully back at Moorebank and racing 1/8 scale nitro r/c cars soon, fast things warm you up in winter, but if a chance comes up a fishing i will go, hehehe
@@RevIt66 I see, those RC cars sound fun haha. They'll certainly keep you entertained. I'm not looking forward to the cold but the fishing hopefully is decent
I don't often see a lure like that being used out here in socal. Looks like a perfect lure for the surf for halibuts/ghost . Wondering why you don't throw it on a baitcaster? Figured it's easier to produce the action needed for that hard bait.
Nice one Nagato! Yes, I watch a few videos from the US (mostly Florida fishing or freshwater bass videos). Those halibuts are massive! I'm not sure what a ghost is though. In Sydney, we use a lot of spin gear, it just seems to be the norm here and very rarely we use baitcasters. I have a few baitcaster combos but they struggle to cast the really light weighted lures and plus the salt water does a number on the reels. I need to use them more often though (2 Daiwa Steez's) because it's a lot of fun!
@@ShroomFishing We Call White Sea Bass as "Ghost" cause their as elusive to catch in the surf. I've caught four or five of em within the last 6 years and all were juvenile(less than legal size of 28" IIRC). Still haven't landed a legal... As for the baitcaster, theres plenty of reels capable of throwing finesse lures as I fish em too in the salt(mainly surf fishing). Obviously I wouldn't be casting the steez, but the lower end daiwa reels are fine. Personally, I cast three different BC, my shimano chronarch 150g(4lb mono), daiwa tatula cg(i think thats what i own lol, 6lb mono), and my favorite the metanium 150 (2013, 6lb mono). As long as you do the maintenance after every session you should be fine. Im a little OCD with my reels so I take em apart till theres 30-50 pieces laying around to be cleaned. Anywho, keep it up, enjoying your adventures out there.
@@nagatouzumaki8906 Thanks for all that information Nagato! I just learnt something about the white sea bass, really cool. That's some nice bc's you have. Thanks again and will do !
In addition to Stephen's great suggestion, for rivers for bass, soft plastic paddletail (black, orange, green colour etc.) with a worm hook instead of a traditional jighead. Trout, depends, but small wooden hardbodies in rainbow trout colours or pink coloured paddletails or yabby patterns
I've got some plans for some spinning but it may be a while before I can hook up a sesh like that. I'm keen to bring that to the channel at some stage!

Thanks for the suggestion Evan. I might have to give it a go once Spring comes around again. These lures are very addictive
Not easy surface lures in those conditions so nicely done. The GTA bit was funny. Glad you didn't break a bone.

Cant get enough of the topwater action!
Probably the most exciting form of lure fishing! 🔥

I'd be really interested in those twitch bait for flatties. Cheers Shroom.
Thanks Victor! That's a vote for the twitch bait Pro-Tech 👍
I wouldn’t of chosen the bender but I might consider when it heats up again 🔥
That's true Christopher! Surface fishing in the estuary is waning. I can't wait till it heats up again 🔥
Hey mate are you enjoying the td black rod? I was going to get the wild weasel model with a td black reel on 10lb j nraid
It's good but my limited edition one has a design flaw with the hook keeper. They have since fixed it I believe
What was the price that you bought? Found one in USA by OSP, it cost nearly $40.
OSP is the original bent minnow and that’s why it fetches prices around 37AUD. The one in this video is a Berkeley and cost roughly 16AUd

Is this as good as the OSP bent minnow or is there like a thing or two that is not as good as the OSP bent minnow?
the OSP is the original Josh. They were the first to come up with this idea
