i joined the Infantry Sep 2001. with a 129 gt score. people cried, complained, insulted, and dismissed my decision, including my 11b recruiter. most of them saying I am a meat shield and gonna die etc.
turns out..having 35 other pissed off, over worked, broken homed dudes carrying fucking machine guns is the SAFEST place in the Army lol.

I enlisted at 17, served 4 years as an 11-Bravo (DMZ Korea and Desert Storm with the 101st). It is true that the Infantry doesn't give you any technical job skills you can use as a civilian (aside from Law Enforcement/Security). However it gives you personal qualities that will help you excel in anything you try for. If you want to go Infantry then do it, you'll probably have no regrets, but think beyond the military. Sign up for the GI Bill and whatever other available programs, and USE THEM once you return to civilian life. Get an education, vocational school will help you more than college unless you have a specific long-term goal in mind that requires a degree.
I hate these pricks that think the Infantry is for idiots - it is a hard life embraced by honorable men willing to step up and accept the greatest risks on behalf of their nation, that lesser men lack the stomach for.

I maxed out the ASVAB score, had a college BS. Two of my squad members did too. We all pulled through during the Panama Invasion and the First Gulf War. If you want to enlist as infantry, then go ahead. It is a tough, crazy and unbelievable experience. If you are not ready for misery, unbelievable heavy loads movement on your back, lack of food, cold weather, being wet in the rain all the time in the woods "practicing security operations" then don't do it. If you you are the wild one like me, who loves the wild, the woods, the whole outdoors hunt and kill stuff, then go ahead and enlist . You will love it!

  • @parawill7074
    @parawill7074 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Great advice. I tell every individual seeking to join the Army that if they want to be challenged and have that “warrior” mentality, they absolutely need to go infantry for their first enlistment. I explain to them that it will suck at times and you will question why you volunteered to do it, but it is 100% the MOST rewarding thing you can do when you join the military.
No matter what you do after that first enlistment. The pride and experience of being an infantryman will follow you, especially if you go to combat. You only get to live once and it is much easier to go infantry as a young individual than older. You make great points about leadership and it is one of those things that is easily overlooked. Once again, great video.

I'm not sure why i want to, i mean the fact that it teaches you how to be a leader is great, but i think I'm more in it for the skill set. Learning how to survive basically, and to test myself in a way i guess, as well as to travel and expand my horizon. I don't have any intention of dying for America, and if i do actually end up in the army, if i die it'll be for my comrades, but dying for a country like the US, or let me rephrase that, dying for corrupt leaders isn't apart of my plan.

He talked to me about war and the hell it is and can be, since I was five years old all i wanted to do was follow in his foot steps, and he wanted me to be safe and think of a different job even though I'm still young and have a couple years before I can join. But now he accepted the idea of me going infantry, and he is like at least be airborne infantry lol, my mom was happy I served no matter what. (BRACE YOURSELF! Annoying ass question that takes 10 mins to read) ..........I do have one question! I am 21, 6ft-2, 220 LB's and have spent the last 3 months doing my best to get rid of my beer gut. I've worked my way up to a 23min 3 mile run; and a 300 LB bench press. I however do have a med waiver for a left shoulder surgery I had in high school; it was very minor. My question is about 18x.. or (Special Forces Candidate). My recruiter has basically told me to pick something other than infantry because I scored high on my ASVAB and my med waiver prevents me from having airborne school in my contract without an ETP (exception to policy). Becoming an Army Ranger or a part of the Army Special Forces has not been a lifelong dream of mine but since my decision to join I can't help but crave to be one of the elite. If you have any experience with ETP's or understand anymore about them than I do I would really appreciate some guidance here... do I go against my recruiters advice and push him to apply for an ETP that would allow me by exception to join the service with a shot at Ranger school? Or am I wasting my time because of the rarity of an ETP? I apologize; I'm sure you get hundreds of questions about topics you have zero experience handling but I don't have a lot of people to talk to about my decision to join the infantry. My mother was in Army Intelligence and is pushing me to go that rout. My cousins are all infantrymen themselves and are all so battle worn I've never had the guts to ask them specific questions about their experiences or if becoming an infantryman is a decision I should make for myself. On a side note 31K is my dream Army MOS and that also my recruiter has laughed in my face for because that's what he calls a "unicorn MOS," aka never available.

Infantry is the general branch of an army that engages in military combat on foot.
As the troops who engage with the enemy in close-ranged combat, infantry units bear the largest brunt of warfare and typically suffer the greatest number of casualties during a military campaign.
Historically, as the oldest branch of the combat arms, the infantry are the tip of the spear of a modern army, and continually undergo training that is typically more physically demanding and psychologically stressful than that of any other branch of the combat arms.
Common representations of infantry fighting forces include the U.S. Army Infantry Branch, U.S. Marine Corps Infantry, Royal Canadian Infantry Corps, Infantry of the British Army, and the Royal Australian Corps of Infantry.
Infantry can enter and maneuver in terrain that is inaccessible to military vehicles, and employ crew-served infantry weapons that provide greater and more sustained firepower.
The transport and delivery techniques of modern infantrymen to engage in battle include marching, mechanised transport, aerial drop by parachute (or by air assault from helicopter) and amphibious landing from the sea.

When you get out of the Army its more difficult to make a living with Infantry in your background. A sat comms POG friend of mine is making six figures now that he is out with just his training during the service and a nice security clearance. If you can get a security clearance as an RTO in the Infantry you can make some bucks with that after your service or just try to stay in 20 years. That last option has the lowest probability of success by the way.

Between Active and Nat. Gaurd I was a Grunt for 18 years.
What he says is true. To be a Grunt you gotta have the mindset that if I go to war I'm going to have one of of the "worst" jobs there is. You ask well what's the attraction in that. Well you put yourself in the situation where if called to serve your Country you may sacrifice more then others. Just like many of our forefathers did. You say to yourself they did it who am I any better where I wont do it.
Exceptions aside its potentially a greater sacrifice then all other jobs in the Military. Yes you have Special Force's in all branches but those are basically Super Grunts when it comes down to it.
So what does this mean with greater sacrifice comes greater rewards both on a personal and professional level.
Many times in life when shit was hard I told myself hell I was a Grunt I can do this and I did it. In my professional life a lot of times especially high stress moments where everything was going wrong chaos was reigning I took it all in stride and excelled actually enjoying the challenge of it. Where others where going batshit and stressing out like a mofo Beeing a Grunt gave me that mindset and tought me that skill.
It teaches you a lot about life and how to react and prepare for a plethora of scenarios where today's average Joe would be lost.
And it gives you a inner Pride knowing hell I was a Grunt.
And although its not about this it's a nice perk when a bunch of guys are sitting around having a dick measuring contest if asked all you gotta say was I was a Grunt and you win especially if you got a CIB. Or for my Jarhead brothers out there if you've been to war.
