Saying that something happens at ___o'clock is just a label; there really isn't any difference if the label is divided into segments or not. Even in the US there are major differences in the time zones. I've lived in the more eastern part of the Eastern time zone (PA and NY) and also in the western part (West Michigan); the sunrise/sunset patterns were markedly different for the hour, but it affected nothing else.
Sure, but that's within reason. If California was on Eastern time, the sun would rise at 9 AM in the winter and set at 11 PM in the summer. There are cities North of the Arctic circle where that happens, but it would be disrupting to big cities. In China nearly everyone is in the East, which is how they can get away with it I guess.

MattTheGamerHongKong Ürumpi uses local time unofficially. As for Chengdu and Chongqing, Singapore also uses +8 timezone and they are on the similar longitude as Chengdu and Chongqing. I've been to Singapore before and they seem doing fine.

I was stuck in the exact traffic jam in 2010 and that took me 8 hours to get off-road, driving reverse and detour a good 200 km to reach Beijing. Not that much luck for those truck drivers.
If that traffic jam happens a lot, someone should set up a gas and snacks store there.

haha well people there have many things to do. china is not like america as people can just sit anywhere and have fun because the emperor's trying to enforce "the land is everyone's" and so people don't have problem with those kinds of things, so they think it is ok to walk around a highway to meet friends. A lot of them who had a table in their car probably took it out (more common than you think!) and sat down to have some fun. My mom's chinese sister say she has some friends who got caught in the jam. i think it is very funny and interesting!
I once spent 11 hours in traffic on a 2.5 mile stretch of A20. Coastbound, just after exit for B2011. And I wasn't even going to the port. I just happen to live in Dover
Today I drove the long way home because traffic was so fucked up. I don't mean I took like 3 more minutes either. Normally it is an hour and a half to go the long way and 20-30 minutes (depends on the lights) the other way. Today however traffic was so fucked up it took me 15 minutes to about half a mile. So I noped out and took the long way, arriving home more than 30 minutes earlier than I would have had I gone the normal way. Traffic engineers need to get their heads out of their asses and solve the real problems instead of doing speed surveys on the same road for the 5th time in a month.

A Chinese novelist, Zheng Yuanjie, wrote a short fictional story back in the 1990s, about a bus in a devastating traffic jam has gone on for YEARS, in which food are transported into the buses and wastes out by volunteer, but people may not leave the bus because regulation says a bus may only open the door when it reaches a station.
Over the years, one passenger had died due to complications of old age. He was not allowed to be transported off the bus, so he had to be preserved there. New technologies were developed just to do that. People came to his funeral on the bus. The bus has become a big family where no one intended to be with another for more than 20 minutes.
In the story, eventually, after the state had built many, many more roads with a new mayor and everything, the traffic jam was resolved. The bus finally reached its destination. And people in it, they don't know what they should do about their life next.

I was just in Inner Mongolia, and G110 is one of the best maintained roads in Inner Mongolia. Many roads are so bumpy that cars have to move at walking speeds to not have the driver vomit.

Actually the roads in china are quite developed, the problem here that causes insane traffic jam every single day is multi-level issue: - Cars were introduced to Chinese people fairly recently, so the vast majority of Chinese dont know how to really drive, other than turn it on and steer with fear - Chinese have no programs teaching people especially youngsters how to behave on the road, for drivers and pedestrians - Policemen have no authority on the road, meaning, they can not stop any car on the road, and they can not give penalties and tickets - Chinese culture plays a big role of causing traffic, the selfishness that is the Chinese character makes it impossible for any of them to stop for even 2 seconds and let someone passes first, they all want to be first, and then they'll drive so slow and never care for who is driving behind them - The government does not plan ahead when they build roads and highways and I mean like exits and ramps and emergency lanes, and they specifically didnt plan at all when they sold millions and millions of cars in the past decade - Getting a driving licence is easy, although it takes a long time due to the number of people applying to get one, but the instructors teaching people how to drive dont know how to drive properly themselves, plus they literally dont care, I saw them hundreds of times setting in the passenger seat playing with their phones while someone in the driver's seat trying to figure out what to do. Just to be clear, I have been living in China for over 10 years and I am saying from my experience
