@coitinsforyourocky Yes! The whole damn album is amazing, but 7empist is epic!!!! As Jim said about Fear Inoculum, it gets better everytime you listen to it, and I'd say that will be the case for a long time. Danny Carey is a freaking 8 armed alien and Adam Jones has taken his playing to a completely new level on this album. After 13 years of anticipation, it has more than lived up to the hype for me.

I love it, but I tend to agree that Maynard at least is a little lethargic sounding, it seems like a stylistic decision he made on this one to stay between like, 2 & 6 in intensity, while the rest of the band goes everywhere from 0 to 10 throughout. He used new vocal textures and tones, some effects and layering/harmony in some parts which sounded great, but it would have been the icing on the cake if Maynard had belted it out a few times, not screaming like T & L, but those long sustained yells where he matches the pitch of the guitar in perfect unison, like the end of Vicarious. That would have been great, but I love it anyways, IMO this is the best album to come out since 10,000 Days, in all of music.

This album has been the biggest grower out of everything tool has ever done. With that said, this gets more and more complex with every listen, very rewarding. Descending is currently my favorite, masterpiece. Love your channel 🙂 keep being you. Have a great day
So weird because for me (even since opiate) this album as a full project and everything about it has been the easiest for me to digest and grasp. I love it
Stephen Thompson that’s really interesting, the easiest for me to digest the easiest has been Ænima but that’s simply because some of it was more radio friendly lol and there was a lot more singing and shorter songs therefore making it more accessible to me. This new album is fantastic but with less Maynard it took me more time to appreciate, he isn’t as prominent as I would like but it’s still fantastic for what it is
@@jeffem8552 the night it came out I put on headphones and listened twice in a row. Everytime I hear it it gets better and better. But I also liked the new a perfect circle album and people gave me crap for that too
Matti Suffron yes same here, the order I rate it now is 5.opiate 4.undertow 3.10,000 days 2.lateralus/fear inoculum 1.aenima. It’s just soo mature ...intimidating composition with the melody being as powerful and cathartic as anything they ever released. The more it sits with me I might rank it higher but for now Ænima still takes it as overall package
Descending is hands down THE CROWN JEWEL on Fear Inoculum. The most beautiful song. Don't get me wrong, I love the album. It is stellar. But Descending is my jam. Stunning!!!!!
I love how all those little emotional tingles are visible in your face expression! That's how one should listen to this kind of music: Open all channels and rrreeeaally let it flow through you! 🌀 Keep it up, brother!! 😊🙏🖤
I've listened to this masterpiece for two days straight . Unparalleled musicians, totally unique sound was worth the 13 year wait. What can you say about this incredible music , no other band even comes close. Long live the GOAT.
The litany against fear comes from the book Dune by Frank Herbert, my favorite read besides East of Eden. It goes like this; "I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."
Love the whole album! The songs really need to grow on you tho, i wasnt that 'satisfied' after the first listen but now i'm blown away, love it love it love it
It definitely needs to marinate in your brain. I wasn't a big fan of the title song at first but it grew on me. The rest of the album I liked right of the bat. I don't see a song that I would skip. Lateralis is their only other album that I can say that.
@@sablemae8853 agreed! My experience of the title song was the same and since i saw descending, CCtrip and invincible live i liked them off the bat... now that i think of it the part i wasnt sure of was one part in Culling Voices... but the album is perfect, pure magic
What makes him so good is his ability to do JUST ENOUGH. His drumming is so tasteful. He doesn’t rely on modern metal drumming gimmicks. He’s more of a Bozzio style drummer. He treats the drums as a percussion section amongst the ensemble. Too many metal drummers write parts they are clearly using only to impress other drummers with. One of my favorite aspects of Danny’s playing is his ability to serve the song and not his ego
18:12 For god's sake, Jim, that's a guitar. Don't you know anything? You made today more valuable with your FULL ALBUM reaction. I was wondering how you'd attack this work and you, as usual, did not disappoint. Bloody brilliant. Thank you.
I've been listening to this album since yesterday, obviously, and I think it sounds exactly how it should sound - Tool! But I've been just waiting, when the social media piles up with people complaining how "they really haven't changed at all" or how "they've changed too much". People just are like that.
After 13 years, there's absolute zero chance of impressing everyone. Every band has a peak and sweet spot and for Tool it was clearly during Aenima and Lateralus. I never expected this album to surpass that, but be a really strong late stage entry, possibly their last album considering how long it took. And considering that, I think it's rather fantastic. I actually like it more than 10,000 Days, so that's a pretty big statement (although I don't resonate with the dark tone as much as I do with the optimistic one of Fear Inoculum).
With Lateralus every single moment felt precise and perfect and yeah, you can't replicate that but I just feel like this album broke no new ground, where even 10,000 Days did, where every album has shown growth, this just shows age - Pneuma is an amazing track and one of their best songs I think ever but this is easily their weakest album in comparison to the discography
those people who dont hear much change in the sound probably dont know what they are listening to. I hear many new elements to the music and many others have commented the same.
10:19 I can assure you according to sources in the room, Adam played that solo in a single take with no extra's needed. Believe it or not, the set up on his badass guitar led way to what im assuming is a finely tuned Ghose Screamer or Screamer effects pedal. Sounds bloody fantastic on that gangster ass Deisel Amplifyer. Adam Jones is brilliantly unique in his own right. Glad to bear witness. Cheers Jim. 18:10 is Danny Carey straight up playing a keyboard. He does it again in Invincible as well.
The first time I heard this song I was so disappointed. I mean heartbroken. Didn’t even finish the track. At the advice of a good friend to give it another try I took some alone time and listened to the entire album without stopping with good headphones. Now I’m absolutely blown away. It’s such a slow burn type album with elements of minimalism that are better executed than ever before. It absolutely shows their maturity after such a long career. I’m just in love with all 6 songs. The tones especially on guitar are some of the best I’ve heard on any album. The sort of square wave fuzz he has going in the title track is so cool
was worth every year to wait for this. I love it M8...honestly im addicted to the Album. Its just incredibly special to have an Album whit so mouch thought behind it... and actually a Band that seems to fully center around drums... when im listening to it i try to imagine the position of the Instruments (Song writing wise) and to me the image in my Head is a compoletly blank and empty space, Drums in the center in front of me, guitars and bass kinda rush by my ears from left to right and back, kinda like wind... and the vocals are like a sun behind the drums, just fading in and out, right into me.. and it all centers around the drums, like a vortex where the drums connect everything .... might sound like im loosing my shit here but as a musician and songwriter this music just touches me like nothing before xD
@BallTistic Screecher and nothing special at the same time. Best Tool song by far is The Pot because is is very dynamic in every sense of the word and it doesn't waste time throughout. These songs are very slow to develop and repetitive which in this day and age just doesn't fly for me. Life is too short to wait for somebody to get to the point...
ive had this album on repeat for literally every second of every day since its release. it seems like everytime you listen through it, you notice more and more. just like when fear inoculum came out, I didn't like it as much on the first play through, and same goes for this album. now after many listens, I cant seem to get enough of it
Jim. You are the man - I’m about 24 hours (1-2 laps through the album) ahead of you, watching your reaction is akin to experiencing again for the first time, but with more depth, and with a friend who enjoys TOOL like I do. I feel like Danny is at his peak in this album, with Adam and Justin showing strong, but Maynard seems a little out to lunch. Culling Voices is beautiful and I think his voice is amazing, but definitely lacking the edge I’ve heard in every album prior to this one. Would’ve taken this from a 10/10 to an 11.
Maynard’s getting old; his voice isn’t what it used to be. But I do think that what he has done on this album does a lot to mitigate his age and use his voice to its fullest without straining it too hard.
*Exorcise* the spectacle Exorcise the malady Exorcise the disparate poison for eternity Purge me and evacuate The venom and the fear that binds me Funny thing is, until I read the lyrics I thought he was saying "the phenomenal fear that binds me"...
Andrew Clark Might be Justin. I’ve heard that all four members contributed a segue to the album. Danny’s is clearly Chocolate Chip Trip, and Maynard’s is likely Legion Inoculate due to that being the only segue to have vocals. That leaves Adam and Justin, and I think it’s Justin because Mockingbeat really sounds like something Adam would do. Some of the distorted mockingbird calls could be pick scrapes. Edit: Oh, you meant during Pneuma. Yeah, sounds like Adam or Maynard. I can hear Justin and Danny playing, but no guitar until the end.
@@Brawler_1337 Only Danny is credited with synth duties in the liner notes. I've seen them live on the 10,000 days tour and Maynard does play some synth, but on the album it would seem Danny did it all.
Some nice soundscapes in this amazing album - almost an ode to Robert Fripp and KC. What a thrill this album is - well worth the wait and great review!!
So I preordered the "limited edition" cd and so it was going to take a few extra days to get delivered. I was fine with that but now I've got a hurricane headed my way and that has pushed back the delivery 😤😪
So glad to see you doing the whole album! Just my opinion, but this album is just great. I am about 10 listens into the whole thing and still loving every second of the complete package 😊
“This is all just too much to take in really” I agree 100% man my mind tapped out somewhere in this stew of music and I was completely sober but felt like I was tripping balls. I should not have been operating heavy machinery 😁
I LOVE your videos now, Jim!!!!!!! And, musically, this entire album was so on-point with about everything!!!!! I think that Adam Jones finally put on his big-boy pants for this entire album as well. And you were 100% accurate about that being a synth in the middle of pneuma. I think that Danny Carey was in charge of that as well, but 🤷♂️
you must must listen to this album from start to finish a few times. Don't pick out your favourite song always. Fear inoculum, Pneuma and 7tempst are the highlights but feel and sound so much more next to the rest
1:23 Haha, damn, sorry if you got harsh comments about you saying it sounds like a cello in the song Fear Inoculum. Pretty sure a lot of people had the same thought too. Hell, there are a couple parts throughout the album where I went "Ooh, two guitars. ...oh wait, that was bass I was listening to before!" 10:10 "This is the bit where you can hear several tracks of guitar, and I know everyone says they don't multi-layer, but..." - Yeah I know. They almost always never do that, which is probably a good live performance decision. There are only a few songs in their whole career where it's clear that they have. But it seems like Adam did it a few times on this album, and they sound great. Good ear, because I don't think I even noticed it on this song, though.
Damn Jim, great reaction, Pneuma especially, the depth of that song hurts so good, if anyone listened to that and didn’t feel overwhelmed with emotion, or get goosebumps, I’m so very sorry
The engineers and producers are just as much a part this album as the band. I’ve never heard such intelligently placed effects, clean drums, clean editing without being over-perfected and polished. You can still hear the fingers changing frets/string between notes, and imperfect cymbal hits but the sound is perfect. Genius
@@danr154 I get Chocolate Chip Trip because of the godlike drumming, but the other 3 are random af. I assume it was Maynard just being Maynard tho and trolling us fans.
@@system0fadowner251 I'm trying to like that one, it's kind of a little more than a segue. Just too much electronic squawking and beeps and boops for me lol. But yea I guess that one should stay for the sake of those that enjoy it.
Such beautiful drum work on this album?, right?🥁 The vocals are less forced than previous albums, there’s no screaming, yelling. The album sounds like a “lead drummers album” , as one review proclaimed. Yes some of the riffs are very similar to other Tool songs, but this is a solid return for the band after a huge time period.

But I also liked the new a perfect circle album and people gave me crap for that too
Yea, I found that this album required more patience than all the others to fall in love with. But when I fell, I fell hard as fuck .
Im gonna listen to Descending for the rest of my life
@justa guy grudge is indeed amazing!
The grudge is my favorite on lateralus and descending is my favorites on this
But this changes every listen 😆
@@vaevictis_ yep
Descending is hands down THE CROWN JEWEL on Fear Inoculum. The most beautiful song. Don't get me wrong, I love the album. It is stellar. But Descending is my jam. Stunning!!!!!
I was SOOOOO hoping he will do an entire album! Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love how all those little emotional tingles are visible in your face expression! That's how one should listen to this kind of music: Open all channels and rrreeeaally let it flow through you! 🌀
Keep it up, brother!! 😊🙏🖤
"the" riff in pneuma is the heaviest piece of music in years
I can’t believe you uploaded all these at the same time. Right on Jim 🤘🤘
I've listened to this masterpiece for two days straight . Unparalleled musicians, totally unique sound was worth the 13 year wait. What can you say about this incredible music , no other band even comes close. Long live the GOAT.
Master piece of shit.
no one comes close? you should listen to devin townsend catalogue
You guys can't handle an opinion? Nothing comes close for him. When anyone says anything assume it subjective if you do not agree.
@@TrulyStucker Yeah, no. Townsend is good but these guys are on another level. The only band that comes close is King Crimson for me.
The litany against fear comes from the book Dune by Frank Herbert, my favorite read besides East of Eden. It goes like this;
"I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."
I knew I had heard that title before, couldn't pinpoint it. Thanks for the heads-up.
Was hoping you'd get to a full album reaction/review! Thanks Jim!
My experience of the title song was the same and since i saw descending, CCtrip and invincible live i liked them off the bat... now that i think of it the part i wasnt sure of was one part in Culling Voices... but the album is perfect, pure magic
sable mae I was kinda the opposite. I felt like a lot of the tracks sounded too similar a lot of the time on the first listen.
@@Moneyman-33 has is changed for you? Did the songs develop their identity?
hated pneuma at first, couldnt understand the time signatures and beat to the first verse with maynard singing hahaha
Danny Carey is absolutely GIGANTIC on this entire album! What a great album from all the boys!
tomorrow will be 1 year since we did this together, how about a re-visiting album listen Jim?
cheers!
That distinctive chord progression on Justin Chancellor's bass in the intro. Classic Tool!!
Danny Carey is a monster.
Every drum beat is perfection in every song. Best drumming EVER!! 🥁 he definitely is drumming from a different realm
58 year old monster!
'beast' monster refers to sub human. He is uber thus beast is more applicable.
Bloody bloody hell is right Jim! As soon as I heard Pneuma I knew that after a few listens that song would sit comfortably in my Tool Top 5
This album is the textbook definition of perfect, even the weird experimental soundbeds!
Jim...gracias infinitas por esta "herramienta" para entrar... (desde Santiago de Chile Felicidades).
Aquí chileee, escuchando tool
18:12 For god's sake, Jim, that's a guitar. Don't you know anything?
You made today more valuable with your FULL ALBUM reaction. I was wondering how you'd attack this work and you, as usual, did not disappoint. Bloody brilliant. Thank you.
So happy to watch this with you. It's a great album!
My problem is that it has too much random studio jamming for an album 13 years later
@@JungleScene name 3
Yessss! So glad you did this! 🤘🏼😁🤘🏼
I'm late to the show, but I've been waiting for this! I'm binge watching these tonight. Thank you good sir. Congrats on 10k subs.
I can't seem to have enough Pneuma. Absolute gem, my favourite by far.
You are my favorite person on TH-cam. Love listening to this with you ❤️
10:19 I can assure you according to sources in the room, Adam played that solo in a single take with no extra's needed.
18:10 is Adam
Headphones - lean back - close your eyes - empty your mind - THEN feel how Pneuma takes control over your breath!
Jimmy Dinsen-Hansen exactly what I was doing before I scrolled through comments! What an experience.
Wow, beautiful description
This is more than music, what they've been building up to. Exactly what we need right NOW :)
Thank you, Jim, your reactions are superb!

It's epic, thanks for opening my eyes to more music!
ive had this album on repeat for literally every second of every day since its release. it seems like everytime you listen through it, you notice more and more. just like when fear inoculum came out, I didn't like it as much on the first play through, and same goes for this album. now after many listens, I cant seem to get enough of it
You did it again! That's why I love your channel.
Maynard took a step back purposefully to "let the instruments breathe." He said that in an interview.
Their rounds of tours are going to start soon... I hope you get a chance to see them live. It's amazing.
Brilliant release!
It just came to me. The "exercise the spectacle part"is a chanting heard before on puscifer's grand canyon. "witnessing the majesty"
Exorcise, cast out the negative
*Exorcise* the spectacle
Exorcise the malady
Exorcise the disparate poison for eternity
Purge me and evacuate
The venom and the fear that binds me
Funny thing is, until I read the lyrics I thought he was saying "the phenomenal fear that binds me"...
so cool you did full album :D I was hoping for it :)
5:05 Jim’s smile. That one sound does the same to me. One single sound seemingly not linked to anything just stands out in a 10 min song.
shtchk!
No Jim, you're right, that's a synth. Danny plays it. You can see it in the live videos of Invincible from their recent tour.
Mandala pads?
It sure sounds and feels like a synth but Im wondering how they'd do it while Danny is drumming, maybe Maynard is playing it (during Pneuma)
Rob G my money is on Adam, I seem to remember reading something about how he was messing around with synths too for this album
I wish I could have seen the tour they did together. My two all-time favorite bands!
Gotta admit. First time i heard Pneuma's bassline... i cried
Great to share such a masterpiece with you all. So happy about the album. Did not disappoint.

I’ve been waiting for this, Jim. Can’t wait.
Pneuma is Phenomenal.

So I preordered the "limited edition" cd and so it was going to take a few extra days to get delivered. I was fine with that but now I've got a hurricane headed my way and that has pushed back the delivery 😤😪
This is how it should be done. Well done sir, and thank you. Been waiting on your review
14:21 such a good groove. One of my favorite parts of the album.
So glad to see you doing the whole album! Just my opinion, but this album is just great. I am about 10 listens into the whole thing and still loving every second of the complete package 😊
I genuinely enjoy your reviews. But I especially like the Tool reactions because you appreciate the genius like I do.
yeah there's definitely more multi-layering of guitars in this album as opposed to Tool's usual format. To brilliant effect, in any case
“This is all just too much to take in really” I agree 100% man my mind tapped out somewhere in this stew of music and I was completely sober but felt like I was tripping balls. I should not have been operating heavy machinery 😁
Lol!! I know what you mean. Intoxicating!
Back 10 months later to listen to this masterpiece with you.
thanks, you are helping me decide to buy this.
it sounds like 3 guitar tracks but it appears that they are the same guitar riffs with millisecond delays
I rest my case. It's nice see the little circular waves, when throwing a little stone through the calm surface of a bond. :oD
I love how genuinely happy u look as u click on a song
I nearly swung my arms off trying to air drum so hard to all those open power chord fills in Pneuma....... The 7count head bang... glorious day.
the guitar break at 20:21 is the equivalent of someone screaking GO !!!!!! . . .from there on out it is just game ON Danny / Adam /Justin
The Pneuma live video with drum cam!!! Danny is unbelievably talented.
Danny Carey | "Pneuma" by Tool (LIVE IN CONCERT) reaction please 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I LOVE your videos now, Jim!!!!!!! And, musically, this entire album was so on-point with about everything!!!!! I think that Adam Jones finally put on his big-boy pants for this entire album as well. And you were 100% accurate about that being a synth in the middle of pneuma. I think that Danny Carey was in charge of that as well, but 🤷♂️
Yeah, Danny does the synths. It's written in the album credits.
you must must listen to this album from start to finish a few times. Don't pick out your favourite song always. Fear inoculum, Pneuma and 7tempst are the highlights but feel and sound so much more next to the rest
My guess is that Litanie contra la Peur was made using a Korg chaos pad. Sounds Korg to me for sure
Tis a great morning, thank you Jim.
Great reaction man,great band!
Yes Jim! I can't wait to see the other tracks.
This is exactly how reaction videos should be.
1:23 Haha, damn, sorry if you got harsh comments about you saying it sounds like a cello in the song Fear Inoculum. Pretty sure a lot of people had the same thought too. Hell, there are a couple parts throughout the album where I went "Ooh, two guitars. ...oh wait, that was bass I was listening to before!"
10:10 "This is the bit where you can hear several tracks of guitar, and I know everyone says they don't multi-layer, but..." - Yeah I know. They almost always never do that, which is probably a good live performance decision. There are only a few songs in their whole career where it's clear that they have. But it seems like Adam did it a few times on this album, and they sound great. Good ear, because I don't think I even noticed it on this song, though.
For what a TH-cam comment is worth Jim, I thought i lost you and thank God I didn't! I hear music very well to educate.. thank you for that
Definite typo of i where should read you (him.. Jim!) My bad
Damn Jim, great reaction, Pneuma especially, the depth of that song hurts so good, if anyone listened to that and didn’t feel overwhelmed with emotion, or get goosebumps, I’m so very sorry
That breakdown groove gets me every damn time, love it, so energetic and it sneaks up on you so gooood. Ears full of wonder
exercise the mallardy?
I fully believe this album seriously changes the way bands that consider themselves great musicians record and mix their albums
The engineers and producers are just as much a part this album as the band. I’ve never heard such intelligently placed effects, clean drums, clean editing without being over-perfected and polished. You can still hear the fingers changing frets/string between notes, and imperfect cymbal hits but the sound is perfect. Genius
I REALLY like the segue tracks on this record 🤷♀️
Lol it's the one thing I dont "get" or like.......just eliminate all of it and give us 1 more truly badass real song.
@@danr154 I get Chocolate Chip Trip because of the godlike drumming, but the other 3 are random af. I assume it was Maynard just being Maynard tho and trolling us fans.
@@system0fadowner251
I'm trying to like that one, it's kind of a little more than a segue. Just too much electronic squawking and beeps and boops for me lol. But yea I guess that one should stay for the sake of those that enjoy it.
@@danr154 There have always been weird interludes and segues on tool albums though. It's just kinda part of what they do.

Yea I know........guess it's not for no-talent ass-clowms like me to question it given their success.
Such beautiful drum work on this album?, right?🥁
The vocals are less forced than previous albums, there’s no screaming, yelling. The album sounds like a “lead drummers album” , as one review proclaimed.
Yes some of the riffs are very similar to other Tool songs, but this is a solid return for the band after a huge time period.
