Why am I not surprised? Hurricane Beryl just passed through!! Unfortunately, larceny of food crops in Jamaica is not even considered a serious crime. People just think that they can go pick and reap what they don't plant. That's the main reason lots of people don't plant. I don't know why Jamaican people don't buy in bulk and freeze. Of course not in a hurricane since you will have no electricity. But in ordinary times when certain crops are in abundance and there is a "glut". Things like tomatoes, sweet peppers, onions, carrots, yams, sweet potatoes, can be washed, chopped and frozen. We do it here in USA!!

She says she buys ginger just twice a year because she washes it, chops it into pieces and puts in her freezer to use when needed. She buys fresh herbs, chops up and uses the root in a small pot in her kitchen to grow more. If I knew how to attach it here I would. I’ll try……

Farming should be encouraged more in schools, both here in London and JA. Not everyone wants to be a doctor or a dentist. It must be so satisfying working on the land. Could help with mental health issues too 🤷🏽♀️.
I am glad to hear you will be growing your own even if you don’t have much of a garden you can grow in pots, those items you have mentioned you shouldn’t be buying but picking from your own garden, food shortage will always happen and it’s going to get worse, be prepared and start from now. I'm also growing mint, peppers and tomatoes on my patio in The States. Food prices are high everywhere. But over $6 for a pound of peppers not happening. Everyone has a little place to grow something. I don't understand how Jamaicans can rely on 1 deggay deggay parish for their food. When we lived in St. Mary, we had a banana walk. Plus all ground provisions and meat were grown on our property. The only things we bought were bread, rice, snacks and soap. This is bare foolishness. But it takes you being away from your country to understand how things work. Or it could just be becoming an adult and understanding politrics. Anywho, show us when y'all begin planting. That was good. We used to send 2 barrels every winter, spring, and summer from 2009 to 2020. We stopped because they were never satisfied. We encouraged planting. We send seeds and fertilizer. They had so many excuses under the sun. A few years ago the eldest son planted plantain and banana after we cussed him out, and even today, he's reaping some of the biggest bunch of banana and plantain ever. A lot of greedy neighbors always beg. Jamaicans (not all) are so lazy and greedy.

@Isis31 they are too dependent. That was the reason we were the supporters, because of the children. Now they are grown. We had to cut them off. We took care of those kids. We build a house for them, school them and they disappoint us. Everything they need just to keep them out of poverty.

I’m from London and in Port Maria for a week. I was horrified when my cousin paid 1000JA for a pound of garlic. That’s nearly a fiver!!! I had no idea it was so. I’m a Aldi/Tesco/Asda girlie so can’t get my head around how expensive food is in JA. I’m not even staying in a touristy area.
Hi Deezer and Outlaw, thanks for the update. I think Jamaicans should start planning short term crops like tomatoes, pumpkin, calalloo, cucumbers ect. I live in north America and every year we plant vegetables in our backyard. My friend lives in an apartment and she plants her veggies in flower pots. Some people here reserve space in community garden for summer planting.
Instead of the farming programs in Canada, Jamaica should invest in Jamaica and go back to basics where we're farming our food. Many thanks, Deezer and Outlaw, for keeping us informed. I appreciate you.
I thoroughly enjoyed this discussion, a couple of years ago I was in JA and was shocked at the supermarket prices and also just how much goods are imported. With so many young people unemployed, there should be government policy to make agriculture more attractive to them, like coorperative farming and distribution.
The government is the enemy in this one. They make deals with the American government to import their goods. So how are they gonna encourage the people to farm. A food like chicken why Jamaica importing chicken, carrots, peppers, tomato etc. Why? Jamaica is screwed politically from all sides by the worthless people who govern it. Next the generation is blood thirsty and lazy.

I am from London too. I lived in St Andrew and I am from St Elizabeth. We didn't notice that there was food shortage. The prices was terrible too. Even at the market. I went to see my family in St Elizabeth and the South was terrible. But Santa Cruz did not suffered that much. We need to start planting our food even In our garden at our homes.
What a ting. People can’t even eat. I understand the scarcity due to the hurricane, but that’s no excuse to put the price so high. We’re killing each other. Madness. I can’t wait to start growing my own when i retire to Jamaica. I try to grow a little here in London but it’s hard when working full time and the growing season is so short, not to mention the pest pressures on the crops. I’ve grown pumpkins, butternut squash, tomatoes, onions, sweet and hot peppers and even potatoes in the past but by this year only the tomatoes and beetroot are doing the best.
