when I've made a fretless, for the nut, I took a fret-height amount off the bottom of the nut before reinstalling it. Easier than reworking each nut slot afterwards. Great video Davey, thnx
Got my sticker ! It’s on the case of my ‘74 Telecaster Bass which , like yours , has the ‘bucker! Got one of these , too , still with its frets ! Plays lovely now it’s been set up . Loved that trilogy, thanks .
I see the sanding marks on the fingerboard sides, especially nearer the bridge. Like the sanding block was arched too radically to make equal contact in the center. I can still see the marks at the final stage.
Hey Dave have you every modified a Electric guitar as far removing its frets? The Bass sounds awesome without the frets i wonder how a Electric guitar would sound?
Hi Dave, so 120-grit is fine enough for the fingerboard huh? Surprised to hear that, I figured at least you would take it to around 320-grit. After watching your videos, maybe I’m over sanding. My bare minimums were usually 400, so glad I watch your videos, thanks Dave!
Thank You Dave, you are truly a consummate professional. ...and this has really been an informative set of videos. Never seen it in any class or book or video, until now.
put them back on with glue.just make sure you wipe the excess of.i took the battery out of my laptop to see if it is making my laptop run noisily.it wasn't though.i will have to put it back in now.
And if you don't like flatwounds it might be worth it to use a set of tapewound strings. I tried to use roundwounds on a fretless T40 conversion and even with a very dense ebony fingerboard it did begin to dig into the fretboard.
The Rooster, what I gather from that is it depends on how much of a backlog he's got, how nice the client is, and whether or not they send a six pack with the instrument. ;)
If you are going to finger the notes right on top of the fret markers the intonation might need to be redone. Just going by what Scott's Bass Lessons says. th-cam.com/video/cEnd3Szjf6c/w-d-xo.html
You should always put your fingers right on the fret spacers on a bass that's been defretted since it does give you a reference for precise intonation. After you get used to the fretless your ear will help you to adjust as needed but they're a great reference point to have there
Right, but the pad of the finger is wider than the fret, so the length of ringing string will be shorter. So it would seem an adjustment of the intonation at the bridge might be needed.
Ronsonol MSDS identifies it as CAS number 64741-84-0, which is naphtha. Or CAS number 64742-89-8 , which is also naphtha. It's naphtha, or so close as to not make a difference. Also lately CAS number 64742-49-0, which again comes back to naphtha.
Dave, that's not a "fretless conversion"....That's just a bass with the frets ripped out...A proper fretless conversion would entail changing the fret board remove the fret grooves...just saying
We love you Dave but you are starting to become annoying with this marketing shit. Buy a CD, buy a t shirt become a patron etc. And all the money from repairs. What more do you want man ? It is becoming hard to even be a subscriber.
Dave, this is a top ten of your series. Really enjoyed this 3. Lotta fun,
Great job, Dave. Jaco Pastorius would have been proud.
You're a good teacher - I like when you show us things.
Dave, the fretless conversion series was one of your best. A very cool bass! Keep up the good work.

Got my sticker ! It’s on the case of my ‘74 Telecaster Bass which , like yours , has the ‘bucker! Got one of these , too , still with its frets ! Plays lovely now it’s been set up . Loved that trilogy, thanks .
Just watched this again. Loved it again!
Really enjoyed watching this conversion! Great work!
That sounds sweet! Nice work!
Nice series. Really enjoy these in-depth projects.
Put a bone nut on it and they sound even better.
They have some of the best hardware I've seen on a overseas instrument.
I dig the hell out mine.
Aurthor Thing I love my Squier Short Scale bass!
Realy enjoying the Penny Black Cd the more I listen to it,its in good company with SRV and Boston,Hendrix!Cheers have a good weekend Dave, nice Bass
I thoroughly enjoyed this series. Resolved my shock reading you say the finishing sanding wasn’t filmed.
Oh wow, that sounds wonderful.
Fing badass Dave!!!!
Wow, wicked cool conversion....... thanks for the thrills
Great video man
Top marks bro sounds great.
That's a sweet bass..great video.
I see the sanding marks on the fingerboard sides, especially nearer the bridge. Like the sanding block was arched too radically to make equal contact in the center. I can still see the marks at the final stage.
Dave's World of Fun Stuff I couldn't figure out what he was going on about either.
Seriously nice job.
great job, on jag bass!
Nice Job, yea fretless basses are a trip. 🎸😂
Beautiful guitar
Totally cool man
wow that sounds like an upright
Cool Dave and good luck with the move.
What did you charge for this job Dave lad? Cheers. Awesome job mate. I love it. I want one now.
Thanks for showing us "a thing"... :)
No fret buzz on this baby.
Thanks for sharing✌
i wonder one thing. after this conversion, for fine intonition, now should i press on frets mark? not between to frets?
Yes
Nice job
Sounds ace
NICE!
Great video but the sound of the sanding and vacuuming is killing me. Maybe I'm stoned. Great video Dave like always!

Oh, alright you did go higher. Just good to know, thanks.
Thank You Dave, you are truly a consummate professional. ...and this has really been an informative set of videos. Never seen it in any class or book or video, until now.
Tis sounds beautifully
I made the switch to fretless a few years ago, and now I have trouble playing with frets. I guess there's no going back now.
why? is it hard or easy to play with fretted guitars?
SHADOWBEAR82763
STICK WITH FRETLESS
I USE BOTH FRETLESS AND FRETTED BASS GUITARS
put them back on with glue.just make sure you wipe the excess of.i took the battery out of my laptop to see if it is making my laptop run noisily.it wasn't though.i will have to put it back in now.
How do you intonate a fretless bass
I dont know if Kim Mitchel is still with Q107 maybe give him a copy or-I-tunes,or do a gig at El Macombo!Cheers brother.
So are you out of your t shirts? I’d go for a small or med if you have any
Where do you get the sticky sandpaper? StewMac&Cheese? or did you find a cheaper source?
Thanks Dave! I couldn't find any.
Hi Dave. You started with 120 grit. What did you end with?
What's the appeal of fretless?
CRANK IT UP LOUDER !
Why not flat wound strings on a fret less bass?
And if you don't like flatwounds it might be worth it to use a set of tapewound strings. I tried to use roundwounds on a fretless T40 conversion and even with a very dense ebony fingerboard it did begin to dig into the fretboard.
steby123 He’s using Chromes, I can tell by the blue silks. Good choice !
Video is full of stereo vacuum. Maybe that could be a good band name?
Stereo vacuum. Sounds like a new physics theory.
Dave, what do you typically charge for a fretless conversion, and would you do that on a guitar if a customer asked?
Dave's World of Fun Stuff Man, you're doing a great job. I wouldn't drop you my bass for free.
dave has retired.dave knows how to repair fender stratocasters.well done dave.
hey dave what do you think of england reaching them semi finals in that that world cup stuff.good eh?
I get that you don't "do it for the money." But if someone asked you to do this, what would you charge them?
The Rooster, what I gather from that is it depends on how much of a backlog he's got, how nice the client is, and whether or not they send a six pack with the instrument. ;)
Sige haci 🤘🤘🤘
Hey Dave How did you set up the intonation for the Nation? right at the 12 fret or something else?
If you are going to finger the notes right on top of the fret markers the intonation might need to be redone. Just going by what Scott's Bass Lessons says. th-cam.com/video/cEnd3Szjf6c/w-d-xo.html

So, if you pretend that there is a third tuna when you cut the string does that help you when you're playing up and down the scales?
Veni_Vidi_Vortice only while playing the hook
wow
mailman hasn't delivered my cd yet.
You can't have fret buzz if you ain't got frets.
*roll safe*
musicman243 Exactly why I did my first fretless conversion 😂
kramer gibson I’m thinking about defretting all my bass guitars.
Nice! Completed and played. I'm happy.
Btw...instead of t-shirts, how about some Dave's-World-of-Fun-Stuff- Toques?
NAPTHA. Lighter fluid is NAPTHA (a paint thinner).
Yes, and you can get a lot more for the same money by simply buying naphtha at the hardware store and refilling your Ronsonol bottle.
Okay. Whatever it's called, the data sheets(MSDS) for NAPTHA and lighter fluid are identical. I learnt it on TH-cam.
Ronsonol is great for laundry too. I rescued a couple shirts with set-in stains. Soak the stain and promptly re-wash as normal.
Can't have fret buzz if you got no frets😉
First ! Cool project Dave . Hope all is well brother ! PEACE
Beauty, eh? Take off.
Dave, that's not a "fretless conversion"....That's just a bass with the frets ripped out...A proper fretless conversion would entail changing the fret board remove the fret grooves...just saying
Nice job. Why someone would want to spend all that money(I'm sure it wasn't cheap) to do that to a Squier bass is beyond me.
We love you Dave but you are starting to become annoying with this marketing shit. Buy a CD, buy a t shirt become a patron etc. And all the money from repairs. What more do you want man ? It is becoming hard to even be a subscriber.
