The lead singer here was Cory Wells, right in the middle of the photo. Powerful soulful voice, one of the blackest white singers ever. The only one blacker was Johnny Winter and he was an albino. Go figure :)
I was only a kid when this song was on the radio but we all knew the line "Mama told me not to come" even if we didn't know what the rest of the song was about. To this day when I walk into a situation I don't want to be around or just a bad day at work, I say "Damn, Mama told me not to come".
How I miss lighthearted fun songs. Songs that are not meant to be taken too seriously. Just sit back and chuckle, remembering we all have gone to a party that is crazier than we are.
I'm surprised you haven't heard it, very funny party. If I remember right (usually don't) they had three guys that took turns being a lead singer all excellent. Sounds like LSD and MJ involved lol.
I was only 12 going on 13 in 1970, so I didn't understand the lyrics at all, nor did my friends, but we sure knew all the words and sang along anyway! ❤ 🥴😵💫🤯😵 But if he's saying he's seen so many things he ain't Never seen before - sounds like an acid trip to me. 😱 😂
Certain songs are just amusing, Put The Lime In The Coconut, Cover Of The Rolling Stone, Money For Nothing, and this one, I could listen to them all the time.
Wait??? You never hear'd Ozark Mountain Daredevils Chicken Train??? And Dixie Chicken??? And Uneasy Rider??? A Boy Named Sue??? Cheeseburger in Paradise??? Ohhh Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw??? What a deprived childhood you musta had.
@@rosemarywatson1231......I would Politely suggest listening to some Doctor Demento to help you recover. Maybe alittle Bugs Bunny and Roadrunner, too, just for good measure.
Try live version “ Try A Little Tenderness” with Cory Wells in blue jacket. Incredible performance. Amazing voice and energy. Blue eyed soul at its finest.
If you think this was a confusing party, can't wait for the reaction to "Joy To The World"! 😆 You really should watch a live performance, if you can. They put on quite a show.
Love that you're lovin' Three Dog Night. Remember that all their Their songs can be found as videos. I think the production value on the videos is pretty much the same as on the studio versions but you miss the band groovin', You need to see these dudes LIVE. That is what it is about!! So fun. And you will really dig it. Please believe! Thanks.
Normally, that would be Chuck Negrin in the dark blue shirt, and the big mustache. I knew Chuck in college as basketball players back in the early 60s before he was famous. Real nice guy. He would sing at the basketball rallies and other big school student meetings. Three Dog Night was enormously popular at one time and had some fantastic hits.
I think I was 12 when i first heard this... I thought that here was a teenager\college student that went to a party where there was drinking and drugs... and he knew that he shouldn't be there... realizing his mom was right! Nothing complicated about it.
My first thought: He's been to a Diddy-style "freak off party". My second thought: That just goes to show that those kinds of "parties" went on back then just as they do now. After hearing your reaction, I had to copy the lyrics to post here. You need to read all the lyrics again. This was no ordinary party. I can't blame you for missing it cause I grew up and heard it a lot on the radio and never caught the meaning of the lyrics until now He wasn't having fun at the party. He was freaked out at the things he was seeing and wanted to get out of there. And his mother's words came back to him as he realized she was right. That isn't the way to have fun. Whoever wrote this was a genius. Verse 1 Want some whiskey in your water? Sugar in your tea? What's all these crazy questions They're askin' me? This is the craziest party That could ever be Don't turn on the lights 'Cause I don't wanna see Verse 2 Open up the window Let some air into this room I think I'm almost chokin' From the smell of stale perfume And that cigarette you're smokin' 'Bout scared me half to death Open up the window, sucker! Let me catch my breath Verse 3 The radio is blastin' Someone's knockin' at the door I'm lookin' at my girlfriend She's passed out on the floor I've seen so many things I ain't never seen before Don't know what it is I don't wanna see no more
Cory Wells is singing this tune. He could really belt out a song, but one of my most favorite TDN song with Cory Wells (sadly missed, passed away 2015 ) singing Try A Little Tenderness, which is a great song-Ive heard Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin sing Try a little tenderness too. I also really love when all three singers of TDN equally share a song, like Celebrate. Actually, you know what? I'll take any of the TDN songs. I've loved watching their old concerts as well. I'm really surprised that these guys aren't in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame! Big mistake imho. These guys had 21 Billboard Top 40 hits (3 hitting #1) between 1969 -1975, The musicians are top notch. I'm remembering Jimmy Greenspoon on keyboards, Joe Schermie Bass, Michael Allsup, Guitar and Floyd Sneed on drums. Ahhh, those were the days.
House party , teen age bullshit going on, its dark and hes glad he cant actually see whats going on. When mama said "Dont go" he didnt listen lol. This was my mom for sure and I didnt listen but she was right in most cases cause SHE KNEW ...so that tells you all you need to know :)
"Do you know my dad?" 😅 My mom would never admit to much of anything. Pretty lame really. We heard though, between Dad and his sisters (who liked to dish to us about our mom).
This was in the 70's. At that time they couldn't be more explicit in saying that this is a party with drugs.
back then it was common to put LSD on sugar cubes (sugar in your tea), the cigarette was probably a joint. it's a drug and booze party.
Thank God one of us explained it to him.
Three Dog Night had 21 (count 'em - 21) hit songs in a row! We old folks still sing them.
Rewind all you want. This never gets old.
No, they’re at a party and everyone is smoking weed and dropping acid. 😂
Not a party without 420 and psychedelics.
@@Tuesdays_Gone I highly doubt that was all they were doing 😂 Chuck from this band was into heroin for over a decade
All mama's give same advice.
But we never listened 😝

Mugs this was about a hippie drug party, that Mama's told their kids not to do. When this came out words had to be chosen carefully.
I always pictured it as a house party at someone's house
Shambala, is also place you visit before arriving at Nirvana. They also sang about it.😊
Written by the great Randy Newman
a classic by Randy Newman I love it it was such a hit back then
Momma told you BECAUSE. SHE KNEW ❤😂
"Some Sugar in your tea ?" is a reference of how Liquid LSD would be put on a sugar cube for ingestion ....,,, It's an early 70's party !
Back when songs could just be fun. Three Dog Night were masters at that.
I was only a kid when this song was on the radio but we all knew the line "Mama told me not to come" even if we didn't know what the rest of the song was about. To this day when I walk into a situation I don't want to be around or just a bad day at work, I say "Damn, Mama told me not to come".

Floyd Sneed's drum work on this is top shelf.
The #1 song in America the week I was born in 1970 was JOY TO THE WORLD........Jeremiah was a bullfrog, was a good friend of mine.
Mine was Christmas Don't Be Late...by The Chipmunks 🤦♀
Mama knew what they were smoking at those parties in the 70s. I think she was afraid her her baby might enjoy what was going on a little too much.😂

👍👍Awesome, I listened to a lot of Three Dog Night back in the day.😊 🖖❤
dad had it on reel to reel part of our sunday mornings clean the house music
There is a live video and you can see how they interact and harmonize. They are amazing.
I was born in 67 and grew up around the Bay Area hung around on Haight Ashbury a lot we were still putting acid on sugar cubes and in her eyeballs LOL
I'm getting a kick out of the fact you want to rewind it right away like that! Great stuff!
Mama had a good idea of what was going down there. As a parent, you never want your kids to do all the dumbass things you did. Somebody can get hurt!
I was 11 when I heard this for the first time. I was hooked!!😎✌🏻
An amazing group, great song!
This would be playing at parties just like the one he is describing back in the day, and we would all be singing along. Enjoy
I heard this as a kid and was actually a bit disappointed when I was in high school attending my first house party! 😹
My mom loves this song and Spill the Wine different band but still

These older songs are so rich, so full of life. I wish I knew what changed
He's talkin bout Diddy freak offs.
I was at that party many times. No one cared if I went or not.😱💕
Heh heh... My friends parents loved this band...they had a cool chicken claw pipe. In my youth..(on the down low).😂❤

I’m a Huge Fan…the Best Cover Band Ever! They never wrote their own songs Ever…I still think they should be in Rock n Roll HOF!
Singer is in the long fringe in middle.🎤🎤🎤🎤
Corey Wells was one soulful white boy. Yeah. Peace
Absolutely loved watching you break this down. 10/10

Mom telling him not to go the party. He got in over his head.
There’s video of this from The Midnight Special!
Great pop rock
Haven't heard this one in awhile thank you ❤❤❤
I was only like one when this came out… But I remember my older sisters playing this album when I was a little kid.
It is a house party that has drug, IMO. Back in the day when this came out it was a major hit.
Never clicked on a video so fast!

Such an earworm..I will be singing this for a while again! TDN is a vibe on most songs but this one is my favorite.
He went to his first Hollyweird party - those wild Hollywood Hills parties.
There's a live version they are a joy to watch 👍❤
It sounds like house party with drugs.

You should hear them do Shambala.
They all sing.

Check out the live version.
The late great Floyd Sneed on the drumkit. Look up groove in the musical dictionary, and Floyd's picture will pop up.
Cory Wells, The one in the middle is singing
Check out their song "the ink is black" 7:16
