Played it the first time it came out for only 30 minutes at my uncle. Those 30 minutes stayed in my memory and would come back from time to time and say "Hey, remember that nice little game where you could play God before building a city, and a super nice ambient music would play?" I just bought that nice little game, finally. And it's so much deeper that I could ever imagine. Way ahead of its time.
@@DigitalRian i wouldn't say new games suck, atleast indie ones, its just simcity4 was insanely good for its time, especially the music, my parents played it while i was still a baby as it just came out that year, also simcity3000 has similar music
I got Sim City 3000 Unlimited in 2000 or 2001 on my first gaming PC as a teenager. To this day nothing beats the memories of playing that for hours. I don't even enjoy Souls games as much as I did those. I got Sim City 4 in about 2008 but even if it just didn't scratch the same itch. I don't know if 3000 Unlimited actually had a larger maximum map size but it definitely felt like Sim City 4 was far more beautiful but far more limited. I still have the disc so this video inspired me to fire it back up. Maybe I'll enjoy it more with fresh eyes.
Ohh so that's why, aside from SimCity 4, games like RollerCoaster Tycoon 2, Factorio, and OpenTTD are such a time sink. They allow us to do whatever we want, with minimum rules and loose goals
Never to late to do a next generation SimCity4. But I know you probably can't microtransaction the guts out of the game like you can with Ultimate Teams...
I've heard youtuber say, "I like how quick the city was built". You can build quickly in this game. And make quick neighbors, quick development. Cities Skylines takes longer to develop an area, less population per density of building. Agent based traffic (which is a good difference though) Now with ilives reader with the data files manipulations. NAM customizes it, but encouraging customizing the traffic simulator further to aid you in your region's needs. You see, the original copy was rushed to market. With these mods/tools 20 years later, still affords you the opportunity to unlock potential features of the game that have never been seen before... until now!
@@DigitalRian When I was writing my PhD thesis, I wanted to do anything else. I was crawling up the walls, finding new hobbies in the strangest places. If not, at least you'd leave us with three great books and a back catalogue of videos with solutions to every problem.
This game still holds up very well 20 years later and it's great seeing the community still active. What mods do you use to get the mature trees by the farmland?
What killed SC4 for me was that I got spoiled by not having a grid in C:S. If someone could create a mod for SC4 to remove the grid I'd be hooked again. Sad that this is impossible.
I just bought this game bc it was on sale. Not only is it better than Starfield - It's also less than 1.5GB . While I just downloaded a 100+Gb game and felt no emotion while playing it.
@@Chronostra Think it's the fact that SimCity games are more defined and straight forward: only based on USA, using strict grid lines, less transport options. While Cities: Skylines has WAY more freedom and possibilities. The more neatly defined gameplay can feel more comfortable than the vast amount of posibilities. Like staring at a blank sheet of paper and not knowing what to draw or write.
hmm, i love both, i have thousands of hours in each game. no idea what you mean about CS tbh, its probably one of my favorite games of all time, i like it more than sc4 (that being said, i do have about 60gb of mods and assets for CS) so much that i went and literally bought more memory solely for CS. vanilla cities skylines i have no idea about.
I thinking about making game like cim city 4 but make it more advanced building. i Loved this game it was my favorite game FOR SHURE. II had like40 giga of addons
As a metropolis enjoyer, would literally carve out hills to become (dangerous) cliffs for the maximized city center land use in the region, just like how real life kinda be (though with more slope management)
I disagree. Games are systems. Some are more restrictive. SimCity is a game without a win condition. One can be added (population of a certain size with certain minimum economy conditions). That is the competition. Games are systems. I need to get to work, but maybe you are talking about linear / nonlinear storytelling in games?
the game was utter garbage. not saying the following sim cities weren't worse, but the engine was so bad, they should've named it sim village. and the automatic street placement when zoning was infuriating. HATE
I enjoy cities skylines but i prefer sim city 4. It was way ahead of its time. Its so simple yet so complex and the ice on the cake for me is how well it handles the wealth classes and population better than skylines. I’m def hyped for cities skylines 2 but in the meantime i’m sticking with simcity 4.
CSKL will never reach Simcity 4 level of excellence ? CXXXL, SC2013, City State 2 same average modern non varied modern skylines ? Alternative to the dragable highway creation way ? Strange game mechanics ? Any game perfect, No but this era of meodrice ?
A literal masterpiece
Cheers!
Still my all time favorite city builder til this day.
That's because it still is the best citybuilder ever made.
When You finally build city wich started to live and people were happy that was big succes

Some weirdos actually enjoy games too, I heard this "chess" thing has been going on for a while.
Been playing SimCity 4 for over 14 years now. Never gets old
Never. The isometric choice was great
Starfield - I clocked 40 minutes and gave up. Bought Simcity 4 because it was on sale - first week I clocked 40 hours.
Ha. It's crazy right? It's not nostalgia, it really is that games are just better then
the soundtrack was amazing, loved the new age and jazzy sound
Old but gold
Sim City 4: "Now you must acquire a taste for free-form jazz."
Edit: I'm 27 in June and I remember CYA books quite well.
not just the jazz, the new age/trancier/technoier music was also really good
Nice work in this video Rian!!!
Thanks!

The issue isn't the speed
Simcity 4 IS a MODERN GAME. These new games don’t have that as what the youth say nowadays…rizz.
Lmao
What is rizz?
Sim city 4 was great
You've really outdone yourself with this one.

Oh get into simtropolis, it will add up fast
Those midwest treeline property lines are so fucking nice
This, and Team Fortress 2.
Good call, great example
I want to take a look at how youve made Kowloon.
Funnily enough the closest is putting low density housing on steep hills
Modlist pls?
Oh god it would take forever. All the biggest 300 from simtropolis but the buildings are custom, you pick the genres you like
Game plays great on steam deck
I'd assume so it came out for the Pentium 2 😂
Sim city 4 is the best ...it should be remastered ....
watching whilst modding sc4
And yet you're still looking at that ugly gray border instead of fluffy clouds.

For me it was the opposite. I feel like SimCity series are more constraining than Cities Skyline. But that's just me though.
