Well, "this crazy old guy" has read all the comments and chose the best fitted song for him to react. I'm sure your Nightwish discovery journey will be very interesting, so I'll subscribe to witness it. All the best from RO.
Emmpu probably is one of the finest guitar players out there, possibly only held back by his modesty. That's not a bad thing, rather a blessing for the band who's members in general have the same mentality. None of them is hugging the limelight and is willing to play a supporting role whenever a song requires it.
This is true. Emppu is like the humble, kind, sometimes little quiet, but funny Finnish guy that you can meet in every Finnish bar during the weekend. Bun when it´s time to do something - he will do it. For the band, greater good and music!
Another Nightwish fan here hehe But also big Pink Floyd fan. I was also on one of the Pulse tour concerts, it was in September of 1994, I was 18 years old then. Even then I knew that was the concert of my lifetime cause I was aware that can hardly be surpassed by anyone and indeed it is still the greatest tour in history! As you say, it was another dimension :) Many years later I was on the Nightwish concert during the End of an Era tour in which they played High Hopes in the mid part so Tarja can rest. Man, what a surprise it was when they started playing it :) It is great to have metal version of Pink Ployd's legendary song and Nightwish did it justice!
This song was performed in 2005, at the last concert of the tour and it was also the last concert at all for the band 's original vocalist Tarja Turunen. During this song, she rested and changed her costume, and the lead vocals were performed by the band 's bassist and backing vocalist, Marco Hietala. Unfortunately, later Nightwish did not perform this cover - they have "accumulated" a lot of their own songs that fans are eager to hear and for covers in the setlist there was no place anymore.
I think they really struck a nice balance between paying tribute to the original and adding something new to it. The guitar solo in particular impresses me. 'Tasteful' and 'finger-tapping' don't often go together, but it totally works here!
Greetings from Finland! Given this amazing live tribute to Pink Floyd, it's hard to believe that the drummer Jukka Nevalainen had a migraine attack (that's why he's holding his head with his hands) and Marko Hietala (the vocalist in this) was also very sick & later told people he was lucky to survive this show.
He holds his head like that every time he plays. Just a thing he does when he is resting. Watch some of the live performances from different venues and dates and you'll see it. He also does the drumstick twirly thing with both hands mid song in most performances, and quite often rests his head on the drums when he's not playing. It's just Jukka doing his thing.
@@richardgoddard37 No, I don't think so as Jukka has been diagnosed with chronic migraine & insomnia, which is why he also left Nightwish as their drummer & Kai Hahto replaced him. Also you can see that Tuomas looks worried & even nods to Marko & Emppu to see how Jukka is doing.
Bloody hell, a chronic migrane? Yeah he holds his head and covers his ears quite typically when there's a break for him. Him having Insomnia is well known. I read somewhere that he has a drummers' syndrome but it didn't explain what the heck would that be.
This was a long time ago. The year is 2005 and Floor was not with the band at that time. The name of their first singer is Tarja Turunen, and this was literally her last concert. This song was played while she was changing outfits. This was the last show of the tour and she was fired directly after the show because the band could no longer work with her. I won’t go into details. Her successor was named Anette Olzon and was announced in 2007. Anette left the band after a big fight late 2012 in the middle of another world tour. Floor was rushed in to replace her and finish the tour with the band and the rest is history.
Have you ever seen Pink Floyd live? Have you ever heard David Gilmour's guitar solos? The Division Bell was my first Pink Floyd albm, and it is still one of the best. So... no.
The vocals are a bit too cabaret at points. But it was good, not spectacular but a good cover. The drummer did a fantastic job. The guitar work is technically good. I'm glad I found it as it's a decent cover and a bit of a change up, but not a patch on the original for me.
Subscribed. I'm 64 years young and Nightwish has been my band for over a decade now. They, by far, are the most talented band on the planet with 3 great singers and Tuomas the musical mastermind behind it all. This band has a huge discography and its so diverse from "slaying the dreamer" to the new song "harvest" which I personally think is a great song. They can also perform a fantastic rendition of a Pink Floyd song which you just witnessed. Enjoy the journey; I sure have!
I remember reading somewhere that High Hopes was one of the songs that inspired Marko to become a vocalist. When it was suggested that they cover it, Marko really pushed for it because he thought he could do the song justice
I agree that the Pink Floyd's Pulse tour was amazing, but in my honest opinion the Nightwish Wacken 2013 concert also ranks right up there with the best live performances I have ever seen.
Hey kerrymac, If you haven't watched the whole end Of An Era concert, I strongly suggest you do. Tarja's voice is brilliant throughout and almost puts the studio versions of the songs to shame. He voice is so much more powerful. And Marco's contribution vocally is also amazing (as you saw in this clip.) This concert made Nightwish my favorite Symphonic Metal band, and still is today.
It was not the only coversong they did on this concert. There are also amazingly good versions of "Over the hills and far away" (Gary Moore) and "The phantom of the opera" (Andrew Lloyd Webber), sung by their first vocalist Tarja Turunen. "Phantom of the opera" could now have the chance to return into Nightwish's setlist - I pray for that - due to the big success of the duet Floor Jansen/Henk Poort (the original Phantom in the Netherlands) in the dutch music show "Beste Zangers".
From one Pink Floyd fan to another. We started listening to bootlegs around '70, and all made it to the Island Grün in the river Rhine in 72, it was like the German 'Woodstock'. 200K folks, everybody tripping, and then Pink Floyd opened with 'Atom Heart Mother', Light towers driving into the kitschy pink sunset sky, Rose petals dropping from a chopper. Those were the days, my friend th-cam.com/video/s5BWfKlG9qw/w-d-xo.html
The Division Bell was the first Pink Floyd album that I had. And as nice as this is - it doesn't match the original to the closest. But that goes for most cover versions of great songs.
It is the Nightwish rendition . Not a clone. Just like Phantom of the Opera, their rendition is way more heavy but still the song is very recognizable. Of course the original High Hopes is different.
A regular discussion/argument/debate in the Nighwish fandom community is "Which singer is best?" It's kind of a pointless discussion; all their singers (not just Tarja, Annette or Floor) are good for different reasons, and all of them are the singers for their time and for their songs. However, I've definitely noticed that most people who participate in this discussion side with the singer they heard first. Given that this particular video was my introduction to Nighwish, that makes me "Team Marco" :-)
You're about to notice pretty soon that Floor fanbase isn't the same as Nightwish fanbase. If you cover her songs, you have both Floor fans and Nightwish fans. Go to some other Nightwish singer and lose the Floor fans, who currently make about 4/5 of the reaction channels viewers. Nightwish fans didn't typically start when Floor joined the band. Some of them have become Nightwish fans, most have not and doesn't seem to be they will. Most Nightwish fans have been on board since Tarja, continued with Anette and continue with Floor, but understandably, they didn't activate couple of last year following the reaction videos, they've been on board before TH-cam existed.
And of course there's also fans of Tarja and Anette who are not Nightwish fans. It's pretty difficult to be a fan of Anette and watch Nightwish reactions, with the constant attacks on her. It's pretty hard to be a fan of Tarja too, a bit for the same reason, but also because the firing of her was so ugly business, it made some fans of her to leave Nightwish for good. The civil war is real, and one isn't a Nightwish fan being fan of one vocalist and bashing the others. Myself am a fan of Tarja and Anette. I tolerate the band and Floor, but have issues with both (or more precisely with the band members and Floor's fans), so not a Nightwish fan either. But I'm here to thumb up this great performance.
