It was due to David's excellent videos I subscribed to VIRL today. I spent several hours trying to get the IOSv and IOSvL2 images to boot with GNS3 VM - they would not boot even after waiting 20 minutes. I was able to resolve this by changing the GNS3 VM CPU configuration - make sure you set the 'CPU Virtualization Engine' preferred mode to "Intel VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/RVI" or the IOSv images will not boot. Of course, your CPU must support these virtualization modes. I also selected 4 core and 8GB of RAM. More RAM is better if you have it. I feel empowered now and able to focus on the remaining CCNA studies. Thank you.
Thank you thank you for explaining switching in GNS3! I have misunderstood the switching support for a long time. I look forward to more of your videos!
Hello David, thx for the demonstration, in your video here I noticed that when you issue #show spanning-tree cmd then in the output all of the interfaces have shr as their type which it means that all those interfaces are known as they are connected to Hubs or we can say the speed/duplex negotiation failed then they became shared type in the output of the #show spanning-tree cmd and I think that if you issue #show int G0/0 then the output will say that " unknown media type" if what I said is correct please guide me how can I make the SW to know the media type of the interfaces , and I installed gns3 and the ios locally without wmvare/virtual box , and I also used different versions of GNS3.
@@davidbombal L3 etherchannel doesn't work properly on vIOS-L2 images. I couldn't get it to work neither with LACP, nor with PAgP. In GNS3 community people say it's a bug of VIRL vIOS-L2 image. Disappointing. :(
Hi David! Great tutorials! I was wondering if you can clear up the step at 7:20. When I press next all my options are grayed. What do you mean by using VM workstation pro? Should I install GNS3 in it or what? Thanks in advance
When using GNS3 in Windows or MacOS, you'll want to also use the GNS3VM, in order to run IOL, Qemu/KVM, and docker containers, in addition to just certain ancient IOS images. VMware Workstation Player, Workstation Pro, or Fusion are recommended over Virtualbox, since Vbox doesn't support nested virtualization (basically running a VM within another VM). What you'd do is download both the gns3 installer, as well as the appropriate GNS3VM zip file. Personally, I'd extract the GNS3VM .ova file from the zip archive first, import that .ova into VMware, shut VMware down, and then install the GNS3 program. When you run it for the first time, it'll launch a setup wizard to help you get the GNS3VM working with the GUI client. If you've already installed and run GNS3 first, you can always click Help->Wizard to launch that same setup wizard.
Thanks David for your precious work. Just one more question that can I run Cisco Packet Tracer In Mac somehow ? Yes I know that now I have both devices in GNS3 ( routers & switches ) for my practice & previously I used Cisco Packet Tracer for switching purpose, but just for the sake of knowledge please tell if there is any method to run Cisco Packet Tracer on Mac. And yes one thing more I know all indirect way to install windows via Wine, Play On Mac, VMware, Virtual Box etc. I am just asking the direct way to install the Cisco Packet Tracer on Mac like we install GNS3 directly on Mac without using any third party software.
You'd have to look on the NetAcad website, to see if Cisco has .dmg file you can download and install. I know it's in the App Store for iPads/iPhones, but it's a pretty old version. You really want PT v.7.1.x, if you can help it.
Andrew thanks for the suggestion. I checked on the NetAcad for .dmg file. But unfortunately .dmg file is not available. For platforms, we have Cisco Packet Tracer are Windows, Linux, IOS & Android. So what we have to do is just wait for the .dmg from Cisco.................Haha............Just Joking.
if I BUY the software from VIRL what would be the need to use the GNS3? In this case I would just use the VIRL instead of GNS3 because I have purchased VIRL. The use of GNS3 is for free so there would be any option that we dont need to "purchase" something from Cisco :( Are there any UPDATED - IOS L2 alternative to avoid purchasing something from Cisco?
Hi David. Could you tell us a bit about the Hardware Requirements needed for running Cisco VIRL images, or the Hardware specs of the machine you use? Thanks!
This link specifies the below values for VIRL: virl.cisco.com/faq/ Verify that your PC or laptop meets the following minimum requirements: • Host system must be able to access the Internet on a regular basis (TCP ports 4505 & 4506 outbound enabled on any firewall/proxy) • Four CPU cores and 8GB of DRAM that can be allocated to the VIRL VM (more resources allows for larger simulations) • Intel VT-x / EPT or AMD-V / RVI virtualization extensions present and enabled in the BIOS • 70GB of free disk space for installation But, on the GNS3 website, you will see examples like these showing the appliance requirements in GNS3: docs.gns3.com/appliances/cisco-iosv.html#appliance_requirements docs.gns3.com/appliances/cisco-iosvl2.html
Hi David, I have not been able to download the IOSvl2 image, there is no way you can pass it to me or where I download it? Other than the cisco page: /

I'm glad it helps Anthony. Thank you for watching!
Thanks a lot David for your update. Highly appreciated
Thank you Faiz!
Thanks man keep them coming!!!
Thanks! We have a long list of topics that we are working through. Expect new content regularly :)
thank you guys , you are great team and support the learning community to great extent.
Are you planning to make web gui ?
Thank you Muhamad. The GNS3 core team have told me that it is planned, but I don't know if/when it will be available.
Hi David, thanks for your informative videos, qq, does GNS3 support NX-OS emulation and nexus overlay switching technologies?
David, can you post a video on importing non-VIRL Cisco images? For example a C2960 switch, 2811 ISR, and some multi-layer switch?
Hi David, is vlan mapping/translation feature supported in IOSvL2 ?
Hi David what about QinQ does GNS3 now support this protocol ?

Hi David do you have a video as to how to configure Level 3 switch in Gns3?
Help and guidance would be appreciated. Thanks
I have recorded this and it is scheduled for release, but I don't have an exact date yet.

Hi Cristian, I am not legally allowed to share images. You will need to purchase a license here: virl.cisco.com/
I've to reset my mine that GNS3 do not support Cisco Switch functions as your video show that already.
I'm glad that the video has been helpful Phissanu :)
I dont have monney to download the iosv, deep
You should just remove .txt extension and that's it. you don't have to type extensions twice
lol... that was a mistake in the video. Thanks for pointing it out.
If it is possible now you can delete the old video that you said we can juste emulate few switch features
