There is a fort in India (called Golconda). It's main gate has a unique design such that if someone stands in the middle and claps, it can be heard at a spot 200ft away, loud and clear. but it isn't that audible for persons standing nearby the guy who claps

The surrounding planters are echoing back the sound source from multiple directions and when they meet, they are combining, amplifying the original sound. A listener outside the circle, would probably be in an area where the sound waves are being cancelled out, the same principle used in noise canceling headphones. Simple explanation, but still a very cool effect.
