15:35 the beeping is the airbag module. You no longer have your airbag impact sensors on the front so it beeps 5x in a set of 5 every 45ish minutes to let you know the system has a fault. The module is in the passanger kick panel just unplug it and take it out. Should be a blue box. Will not hurt anything if you remove it. Ive owned five 96 rangers and all had that issue. Hope you see this and it helps.

Also looks like the tires maybe at highway pressures instead of aired down tbh. Takes a lot of the shock absorption as well to have the tire pressures right.

15:34 I used to have a 1998 Ranger. It used to beep five times and repeat five times. If thats what is happening in your Ranger, its because the airbag indicator light is burnt out. When the indicator is out, it beeps to alert you that the airbag is on. To stop the beeping, all you should have to do is replace the indicator light.

Don't think that's a truck noise. You can hear the "door open" tone during their test drive and it sounds way different. Probably a "low battery" alarm for a camera or some such.

At 6:50 drum brakes have a higher initial clamping force than comparably sized discs, but they overheat quickly. Rear drums are great for a daily driver because they wear more slowly than discs so they're overall low maintenance.
Also don't get fucked in the rust belt if you barely use your brakes. (Like in an EV)
@@rkan2 I live in the rust belt. My drums get fucked way faster. It isn't the shoes or the drum itself but rather the little linkages that rust solid.
Drums on the Tacoma were great. Everyone complained about them, but I bet they weren't complaining when their brake job only cost $150-$175 for only the front and maybe a single can of brake cleaner for the rear drum shoes. No idea what's on there now, but hopefully it's disc brakes for a $48k medium sized truck!

@@mattb9664that's probably be cause rear brakes wear at about a quarter of the rate of fronts, even less on pickup trucks that aren't loaded down, not because they were drums.

I, literally, was at The Mint 400 this past weekend, as the fuel man, on a friend's, Sportsman Class Truck, and I was blown away!!!! I had tons of questions, and "EVERYBODY" was willing to talk to me and help me understand that event!! There were even a few classic trucks, running leaf springs!! So this video series is perfectly timed for me, because I am very curious as to what it takes to build such a truck, and hopefully, finish the race!!

Camping/Off-road trucks = the importance of every Series & doing EVERYTHING ALMOST Right.
Conclusion = Doing EVERYTHING RIGHT with expert help THE FIRST TIME. FAST & ALL TERRAIN.
I like the fact that even though Donut is making a lot of "Mainstream" videos, they also still make stuff that's more technical and interesting to enthusiasts. I'm a mechanical engineer, and I often cringe at misinformation on other car channels, but Donut is legit

Those yellow dots on the new tires are the factory balance point. The manufacturer puts it there so you can line the yellow dot up with the valve stem, since it's the heaviest spot on the rim. Makes for an easier balance job with less weight.
6:10 There is a special lube meant for that specific application. Anti seize works in a pinch, but will not hold up to the weather and say a Car wash, the same as the specified lube will. Word of Advice. Use the proper stuff, You wont be replacing your calipers and rotors WITH your brake pads Every single time.
The truck is already looking awesome, suspension and tires made a huge difference.
Nolan doesn't give a f*** and just gives 'er the beans. Love it.

What my father told me is that drum brakes are engaged by default and is disengaged to drive. It helps in emergency situations where if something fails the brakes engage by default and slow down the vehicle. On the other hand, disc breaks are disengaged by default and use the brake fluid pressure to engage while trying to slow down. If your disc breaks fail, you’re SOL as far as slowing down.
While what your father said was true, it's only true for air brake systems in larger vehicles like semi-trucks. Passenger cars use the same hydraulic force to apply pressure to the drums that disc brakes do. I imagine it's because air systems are a lot more complicated and heavy, even if technically safer.
Drum brake setups do weigh a bit less than rotor / caliper setups, and that is unsprung weight. If you weren't planning to drive the truck through a small pond (wet brakes) or stop after repeatedly jumping hills (heat fade), best to leave them on the rear.

Shock tuning is well needed when y’all are done. I have a jeep MJ on 14” ads coilovwrs in the front and 16” rear. 35s boosted 4.0 stroked to 4.6l. With proper shock tuning i can hit woops and it feels like i’m driving down a normal paved road.
My vehicle is stock. When driving down a normal road it feels like a normal road. I spent no money.
I think this has by far been the most entertaining series of Money Pit so far. Every episode is full of interesting upgrades, difficult challenges, and of course lots of laughs.
I put 35s on my 2000 ford ranger. Some performance ignition and a knn air filter and that little for banger has been ripping hard for 24 years now. I love my ranger

Fix the passenger air bag switch, that’s what that beeping is. As the light in the passenger air bag switch is broken, which sets off an air bag code. Same thing happens if you remove the air bags. Basically if the air bags are removed you have to put a resister in to trick the system into thinking the air bags are there.
Drum breaks are actually more efficient than disk breaks, they just aren’t good at getting rid of heat. If you have ever driven a car with 4 wheel drum brakes it is super easy to lock up the wheels. It is also why semi trucks come with drum breaks.
The anti-seize application at 6:04/5 timestamp with the blur sensor is all the little things that separate men from the boys in terms of texture, detail, comedic micro-moments during production and editing of these great videos. Thanks for always keeping the theatrical bar sky high.
That grey shit is crap and will dry out. You want to use copper anti-seize.
Regular anti-seize cannot withstand the heat of breaking systems. It will dry out and turn into like a dried paste. If you really want to do this step then I suggest the copper based kind like the guy above me says, but it is not really necessary. If you don’t want your breaks to squeal just make sure you get ceramic pads

If you air down your tyres you will see a world of improvement. Since you have headlocks you can go as low as 4PSI. Try 15PSI first then play with it a bit until you find the sweet spot (rears lower than fronts)

Also frame enforcement in the middle to connect front and rear, not to collapse in half on a hard woop, some suspension adjustment to achieve higher clearance at the front, will give better grip in turns,, front rebound 70%, rear 45%, fast valve front 65%, rear 40%, slow vlave front 80%, rear 60% and a bigger metal tank where you got the spears mounted and it should balance out the weight distribution better without having ass fly over the head on a series of woops

The beeping 📣 is the passenger airbag light burnt out, my ranger did that too.
Pretty much Ford has an alarm to notify you when that indicator light is failing since it's a safety function it's super annoying. There are ways to bypass it or you can just move a bulb from something else on the cluster into that slot and it will stop.
My f150 does this and I hate it

As a South African Aussie who loves 4wding and big rigs I’m so in for this series ❤ cannot wait to see the end product !!
It will be a whole lot smoother if you lift the front a bit more to gain some travel and remove one or two of those leafs from the rear leaf spring packs to soften things up. The less bumpy and more like a Cadillac you get that ride and the faster you will be able to go. If you don't feel the bumps the suspension is traveling up and over the obstacle as is the goal vs bouncing off of it. Great work though, I love ranger prerunners. Fun trucks to have as a daily driver in the high desert.
well in reality they just need to do some shock tuning and soften there whole shocks all around have less rebound also i dont think they aired down at all they should probably be anywhere from 12-16 psi

@@razgriz4118 Exactly! Those are link killer springs from giant motorsports. They are intended for "race weight" like you said fuel cell, roll cage etc... that and shock tuning and this thing will be smooth as butter. This is donut media not terra crew so they are learning

Not a mechanic and just a rando internet dude, but have off-roaded for many years. Think about changing the camber on your rear axle. I should decrease the play and pull of your axle when the suspension flexes and take some of the torque off of the connecting parts as well. (specifically, like angle it about 15 degrees or more tang up)

Very nice video I just noticed a couple of things about the ranger.
If I were y'all I would replace that lead acid battery on the back with a lithium ion preferably in some sort of spiral or honeycomb. All that sloshing around is going to kill your battery. Not a sexy upgrade but worth it.
I never thought I would be so excited to watch anything related to an old ford ranger but by god am I happy you guys are doing it. This is some class act content. Can’t wait for the next episode. I hope you compile the whole build series into a big video at the end.

i think you need to install a handle or something for the passenger to hold onto, and maybe some better harnesses. Also, there's a sport in northern europe where they send high powered trucks across the surface of deep water like a water bug or something.
“Grinder and paint make me the welder i aint” was my mentality while trying to stick weld a very thin fence post on top of another thin fence post for my mom so we had an attachment point for her shade sale. It withstood the little bit of snow we had in Louisiana a few months ago (which caused it to droop several feet) so ig i was popping off with the grinder and paint that day😂

You should really get a Hurst shifter for your guys' ranger. I got one and absolutely love it. Tight, crispy shifts.
My dude next to a state forest had a ranger like that. It was laughing at the trees down across the trails. Fun times. Didn't even slow down on the little ones that would bone any car.
By the way, drum brakes have one advantage and that is that the sand does not get there so easily and does not make grooves in the disc, and they used to have the advantage that there was no need to install a brake pressure limiter due to their weak braking effects, because the car is supposed to brake, I don't know what the relane values are, but I shoot 60 on the front and 40% on the rear so that the car does not skid during braking, if I am wrong, enlighten me, thank you.
