  • The fishing community has lost a great angler, icon, and friend. We are deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Jose Wejebe, host of the immensely popular saltwater fishing and fly fishing television show Spanish Fly on the Outdoor Channel. Through his show and his adventures he shared a passion for fishing that touched and inspired anglers around the world.

As a kid I grew up watching Spanish Fly. When I turned 16 my parents decided to move to Key West and all I could think about was getting to fish with Jose. A year later that dream came true. What a legend and amazing human!

I miss Saturday mornings during the 90's watching Jose fish with Flip Palot. I think that was the last time I really felt like a kid. What a tragic loss, but what a gift it was even for those of us who just watched Jose from afar. The only thing in this world that will slow the madness of time and aging is fishing with people you enjoy being with. Thanks Jose

I am sad to here of the loss. I never met Jose but feel like I've lost a friend. He and his show have been a part of my life since 1995. I would watch Spanish Fly in the morning while getting ready to go fishing here in Hawaii and think one day I will get to fish the flats in Key West. Last summer I fished the Keys it was awesome. My dream came true because of a great person cared enough to share his passion with me on Saturday mornings. Jose will be remembered forever.

Jose was a gem of a human being...full of zest for life and adventure. I remember watching his TV shows in the 90's on ESPN. I believe they were on Saturday mornings and I would never miss an episode. I especially enjoyed the times when Jose and Flip got together...two very special fishermen. Thanks for the memories, Jose. You will always be loved for your craft and smile. Gone, but not forgotten. phillyman ~

I guess it is never too late to pay tribute to Jose. I didn't know about his accident until recent. I used to record his shows on VHS, still have them, and still watch them. I think Jose has shown the fishing and non-fishing community, what the passion is all about. His understanding and dissemination of the natural world in which us fisherman enjoy, is truly a pleasure to watch. Cheers to Jose Wejebe for sharing your life with us.

I grew up with him since ninth grade. we had some good times..he also worked with flipper's and salty the sea lion for the old TV show's as a trainer. Jose and I and some other friends would go snake hunting out in the glades also. His dad had a cool place on Fisher island before they built it up. we had some great parties. you could only get there by boat. I miss you bro.

But now on weekends i watch one of his old shows before i set out. Tomorrows first fish is for buddy. thank you for all you have tought me.

People like Jose, Flip, Larry Dahlberg.... these men are are/were what you call real fishermen with a real passion for fishing and sharing their knowledge. I remember when Jose died, I felt like a part of my childhood was taken away.. A life cut way too short. Looking back I realize that you have to enjoy life. Don't be afraid to go out and do the things you love to do. Work hard and take some time for yourself. Once life is over, nothing goes with you. Jose's life was a life not wasted for sure.

He took the time to show me some tips. I’m 6’4”. He’s 5’5”? I was in the shadow of a giant. I remember his easy voice telling me what I could do better. Weird… I wish he was here and god bless Flip.

In '96-'97 Jose filmed an episode in San Diego, CA. His flight home was out of John Wayne airport in Orange Country and he was booked on a Cloud 9 Shuttle from SD to the airport. I was assigned the run and had the great pleasure of driving him there from SD which took about 90 minutes. I told him every joke I know (which is a lot!) and had him laughing all the way. Even tho his prepaid fare included a $20 tip he handed me another 20 bucks in cash. Classy guy. RIP Jose.
