This is criminally under-discussed in all of the politics and society discourse, mainstream and social media. Politicians seem to have concluded that, as with the environment, most people (especially their swing voters) just don't care very much and so the issues are ignored
As a UK disabled person thanks, the cuts and deaths from suicide in our community again and again, nice to know we aren't alone. I have a lot of fight for others but yeah x we got each other
I agree with everything John's saying, and wanted to add that this also applies to neurodiverse conditions. Provisions such as noise-cancelling headphones, text to speech software and additional training time can allow people with neurodiversities to thrive in the workplace. Unfortunately these conditions are often under-diagnosed, especially in women, which means that reasonable adjustments may not be offered and people will struggle to find work. I almost quit when I first started my current job approx. 7 years ago as I was the slowest on the training course, but I'm now pretty confident and have had 2 service awards. Although my workplace offers reasonable adjustments, I was undiagnosed so received no help.
Many thanks for commenting! A lot of work places, eg. open plan offices can also be very challenging for neurodiverse people and create barriers to employment.
When Starmer was asked in a BBC pre election debate by a worried disabled woman what the Labour government would do to protect disabled people who cant work from benefit sanctions, his answer was all about making disabled people work. He then ironically chided Sunak for not listening to peoples questions. The new lot are as bad as the last because as a society people don't care about disabled people despite it being the single biggest group you could become a part of at any time through no fault of your own. And then you become invisible. Millions suffering, this needs to be much higher profile so thanks Guardian.
I'm currently in the US, moving to Manchester soon, but with what's happened here I've been realizing that if I could get the care I need I'd certainly be running a successful small business as I only closed it due to my health. Yesterday I missed a Dr appointment because I passed out on the drive there (pulled over and parked first bc I felt it coming.) And even though my Dr really wants to help, insurance refuses to pay for anything. I'm done feeling guilty for not working. If society won't let me take the steps needed to work then they don't get anything from me.
"It's expensive, and that's what precludes people" that's what people don't understand. "Why don't you just __?" Well yeah I probably could if my parents were rich and didn't kick me out at 18 for being a burden. I started with a lot less than you, and it's almost impossible to save because, like the awesome guy from the video mentioned, almost all money i obtain has to go straight to my more expensive existence.
Thanks The Guardian ♥️ All I want is more and more of this kind of content. Channel 4, ABC Australia, Radio New Zealand, I'm seeing more of it creeping into mainstream media outlets, but we need so much more.
my best friend took the bus for 3 months and i was thinking about doing getting on the same bus as her because she has anxiety and i know how she feels sitting on a bus on her own, sadly tho for her the routine recently for her has been bad, she gets dropped off at a mile away from the aera she's suppose to go, and she gets incredibly anxious and worried, so now she ain't using them. it's honestly awful how this government can just say 'forget it, we don't give one fuck'
He's had to fight for it, many can't and so he is speaking out on behalf of everyone and loads of support can suddenly disappear at your next dodgy assessment which are every few years even if your conditions won't ever change. It's a never ending battle to just be allowed to live independently.
@@303cerebral Fair enough with live independently. But if you can sing in a pub you can work with a phone. Public supporting lifestyle outside of house to it seems.
He literally said he’s working full time and paying taxes. But he can only do that because he has the right support and the right accommodations to allow him to. And he’s lucky enough to have been able to pay for those accommodations himself. Millions of disabled people are never able to work because they never had the money or the support in the first place. And what support there used to be got stripped away over the last 14 years. So the government talks about getting disabled people back to work, but they don’t offer any of the money those people need to get working. But they still intend to take benefits away from those people who are unable to work and then blame them for not working He’s one of the lucky ones, which is the only reason he’s gotten enough attention and made enough noise for someone in the media to hear. There are millions of us who can barely get food and wash ourselves who will never be seen or heard. And he’s standing up for us. But then people like you take the fact he’s capable of being seen and heard and take that as evidence he doesn’t have enough problems and doesn’t need to be listened to
@@kb4903he would still need support hours and physical adaptations to work in a call centre, he’d just be bored. Both are paid work and living independently extends to having equal choice and control over what field of work you go in to, as well support for those who (unlike John Kelly) can’t work.

Thanks for your thoughtful comment. Yes, disability rights so rarely get reported on.

@@kb4903 respectfully people deserve the right to pursue their passions and interests. Judging what others deserve is a slippery slope.
