  • Exploring Evora in Portugal, the historic capital of the Alentejo. Évora is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has a well-preserved old town center surrounded by medieval walls, and many monuments dating from various historical periods, including the Roman Temple. The Romans conquered Evora in 57 BC and expanded it into a walled town. It was under the Moorish rule (715-1165). Evora was chosen to be the European Capital of Culture in 2027.

Évora was an excellent choice. You have good taste, sir.
At 11:04 to 11:09, look at the arches in front of you. They're asymmetrical. 7 on your right, 6 to the left.
I worked there, at the Uni many many years ago.

Thank you. Évora was on my radar for quite a while and finally I got the chance to visit it. The University architectural design is fascinating. I am glad I visited that place.

What a unique connection to Évora! Serving in the military there must have been quite an experience.

Amazing, I thought Sighișoara was the last, inhabited walled town in Europe, and then we too have Evora🙂
Wow, Irvine, California, the least pedestrian friendly town in the whole world!
"At the international Walk21 conference this week in Vancouver, British Columbia, an eminent authority on streets boiled the walkability of cities down to the number of street intersections per square mile.
Venice has 1,725 intersections per square mile. “It’s very complex, it’s very messy, and people walk,” said Allan Jacobs, urban design consultant, former San Francisco planning director, and author of Great Streets.
Brasilia, near the opposite end of the spectrum, “has 92 intersections, and you don’t walk there,” The Vancouver Sun reported Jacobs as saying. “Irvine, California is the classic automobile city. It has just 15 intersections, the lowest I’ve ever counted.”
Other places that are good for pedestrians, Jacobs said, include the Market Street area of San Francisco (300 intersections per square mile), Tokyo (988), Savannah, Georgia (538), Portland, Oregon (341), and Paris (281).
The most complex and messy street patterns provide the most walkable and enjoyable experiences for both visitors and residents, according to Jacobs.”
    - ‘Messy’ street patterns boost walking
So nice there, but I hate the cars and the dogs😕 Maybe we should try to establish a car and dog free street inside the walled town, and to settle there? And when the rest of the town saw our high quality of life, they might ban cars and dogs inside the whole of the walled town🙂
My little girl is of the smartest pupils of Norway, so the city council should do all they can to get us there, so that se can enroll to this wonderful university;-)

You will see more Portuguese-walled towns/villages in my next videos. Evora is not the only walled town in Portugal. Thank you for the detailed information. I need to read up more 😊

@@WandererBell Amazing, so many possibilities to create Market Towns from existing structures in Portugal! I'm a big fan of the Market Towns initiative in New Zealand, and have had some contact with them. Search up "The Kainga / Market Town"
