  • The reason why Christian ethics are needed in our day is because man is totally depraved. Though man knows what is right, he insists on what is wrong and even suppresses the truth (Rom. 1:18). In this message, Dr. Steven Lawson considers the sinfulness of humanity and identifies our only hope for righteousness in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross. It is only in being redeemed that we can understand the true foundation of ethics.

      Jesus Christ can.
      >> On Calvin...
Calvin was not "simply a teacher;" he was a heretic, vicious murderer (unless you approve of burning innocent people alive at the stake for disagreeing with you, and beheading a girl for striking her father), a well documented dictator that would have put Stalin in the category of a boy scout, arrived at his so called "Calvinism" from the catholic church, etc. My opinion concerning Calvin is well based on historical facts.
      More fact...
Calvin did not originate "Calvinism," Calvin stole the concept from Augustine; (Augustine of Hippo, also known as Saint Augustine, was a theologian and philosopher of Berber origin and the bishop of Hippo Regius in Numidia, Roman North Africa.)
Augustinian Calvinism is a term used to emphasize the origin of John Calvin's theology within Augustine of Hippo's theology over a thousand years earlier. By his own admission, John Calvin's theology was deeply influenced by the Catholic church and Augustine of Hippo, the fourth-century church father.
Calvin simply plagiarized Augustine's ideas and quoted Augustine over 400 times in his (Calvin's) writings. At it's core, so called "Calvinism" is nothing but a false doctrine of the Catholic church. Spurgeon in his time, Calvin and Calvinists today are merely teaching a false doctrine of the Vatican Roman "catholic" cult.
Augustine believed God's predestination was based on God's foreknowledge of every individual's merits, whether in their current life or a previous life. ... Prior to 396, Augustine believed that predestination was based on God's foreknowledge of whether individuals would believe, that God's grace was "a reward for human assent".
You Calvinists, whether you know it or not, are merely spreading a Roman Catholic heresy. You might want to think about that.

Paul said in his flesh dwelt no good thing. Yet in his mind he wanted to serve the Lord. The context is his life under the Mosaic Law (see logical flow of Romans 7). So man is not totally depraved. He just is drawn to sin and the Law makes it worse.

I love the fact that Paul cites to two psalms in Romans 3 which TULIPs depend upon to support total depravity. If David wrote the psalms, he is seeking God and he is thereby necessarly excluded from the statement as he is actually and really seeking God and we have written proof of the same. So Paul is using a generalist and not a grounds for proof text. Here is another: Proverb 30:2 Oh by the way, I believe TULIP should stand for The Uppity Lilliputians Of Protestantism.

The Church Fathers who were closely connected to the Apostles who wrote much of the Scripture in question, spoke out in DEFENSE of free will and against total depravity/inability.
St. Gregory of Nyssa - "For He who holds sovereignty over the universe permitted something to be subject to our own control, over which each of us alone is master. Now this is the
will: a thing that cannot be enslaved, being the power of self-determination."
(Gregory of Nyssa, The Great Catechism, MPG 47, 77A; in Gabriel 2000:27).
Ignatius of Antioch - "Seeing, then, all things have an end, and there is set before us life upon our observance [of God’s precepts], but death as the result of disobedience, and every one, according to the choice he makes, shall go to his own place, let us flee from death, and make choice of life. For I remark, that two different characters are found among men - the one true coin, the other spurious. The truly devout man is the right kind of coin, stamped by God Himself. The ungodly man, again, is false coin, unlawful, spurious, counterfeit, wrought not by God, but by the devil. I do not mean to say that there are two different human natures, but that there is one humanity, sometimes belonging to God, and sometimes to the devil. If any one is truly religious, he is a man of God; but if he is irreligious, he is a man of the devil, made such, not by nature, but by his own choice. (Letter to the Magnesians - long version, Chapter 5; ANF Vol. I p. 61; emphasis added.)
Justin Martyr - "For the coming into being at first was not in our own power; and in order that we may follow those things which please Him, choosing them by means of the rational faculties He has Himself endowed us with, He both persuades us and leads us to faith (First Apology 10; ANF Vol. I, p. 165; emphasis added).
Athenagorus- Just as with men, who have freedom of choice as to both virtue and vice (for you would not either honour the good or punish the bad, unless vice and virtue were in their own power . . . . (Athenagoras’ Plea 24, ANF Vol. II p. 142; emphasis added).
Ireneaus of Lyon (closely connected to the Apostle John) "Now all such expressions demonstrate that man is in his own power with respect to faith" (Against Heresies 4.37.2; ANF Vol. I, p. 520).
Athanasius -Wherefore virtue hath need at our hands of willingness alone, since it is in us and is formed from us (NPNF Vol. IV p. 201).
Methodius - Now those who decide that man is not possessed of free-will and affirm that he is governed by the unavoidable necessities of fate, and her unwritten commands, are guilty of impiety towards God Himself, making Him out to be the cause and author of human evils (Chapter 16, ANF Vol. VI p. 342; emphasis added).
St. John Chrysostom - Having thus enlarged upon the love of God which, not content with showing mercy to a blasphemer and persecutor, conferred upon him other blessings in abundance, he has guarded against that error of the unbelievers which takes away free will, by adding, “with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.” (NPNF First Series Vol. XIII p. 418)
St. John of the Ladder - Of the rational beings created by Him and honoured with the dignity of free-will, some are His friends, others are His true servants, some are worthless, some are completely estranged from God, and others, though feeble creatures, are His opponents (Step 1.1; emphasis added).
John Calvin himself was more than aware of the fact that the early church disagreed with his teachings on free will. In the Institutes he wrote, "Further, even though the Greeks above the rest-and Chrysostom especially among them-extol the ability of the human will, yet all the ancients, save Augustine, so differ, waver, or speak confusedly on this subject, that almost nothing certain can be derived from their writings." If your teachings do not stem from what was passed down by the Apostles to the early church and the martyrs for the faith, then you are not teaching the faith of the Apostolic authors.

If we were born unable to understand the gospel:
So why does "the god of this age" need to blind us? are we not already blind from birth? [20:40]
How can sin make us fools if we are already dead? [32:08]
Why is God going to say that it is "moral insanity" to sin against him, to someone who never has the capacity to hear him, because he is already dead from birth? [32:18]
In this comparison of Isaiah, is it the same to say that we are completely sick as to say that we are spiritually dead? [32:55] Normally a Calvinist says that we are not sick, but dead. We don't need a "cure" but a "resurrection".
All These arguments mentioned by Pastor Lawson, unintentionally, seem to be based on the fact that man can hear and understand the gospel. Because he can sees and can understands the god of this age has blinds him, because he can understand God tells him that sin makes him a fool. Because he can understands, God tells him that what he does is morally insane. Because he can understand Jesus uses parables "so that hearing they may not understand, and seeing they may not see". Because he can understands God tells him to "Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as woo"
Please understand me, I do not deny that man is unable to approach God by himself. But I do not believe that the word teaches the impossibility of man to respond positively to God's call.
That is why God holds us accountable and tells him that he "has no excuses" and that is why Jesus says "He that believeth on him is not judged: he that believeth not hath been judged already, because he hath not believed on the name of the only begotten Son of God"

    • @YeIsBornAgain
      @YeIsBornAgain 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I too don’t see the Scriptures teaching that we are inheriting Adam’s guilt and condemnation (in the sense of eternal and final judgment that God will carry out unto everyone based on their own actions). God does not punish children for the sins of their parents. God will punish sinners for their personal sins. Also, Lawson is making it sound as if all humans are depraved to the maximum potential degree, which is also not found in the Bible. Instead of focusing on that he could’ve emphasized more significantly our inability and unwillingness to pursue God.
Sadly, this sermon overall sounds like a copy-pasted template from a textbook on reformed theology where his goal is to present reformed view rather than Biblical.

Obviously, they're born without the ability to understand their own depravity but that doesn't negate their depravity. Since they lack the capacity to understand their fallen nature and their need for salvation, does that mean they go directly to heaven despite their depravity? What is the means of their salvation?

Paul's doctrine in Romans is incoherent with that of Ezekiel and Jeremiah, who were both Prophets of God and thus appointed by God to give his message and instructions to his people.
Keep in mind that Paul was not a disciple of Jesus and only claimed that Jesus appeared to him on the road to Damascus long after Jesus went away.

Everyone is born with a sin nature. This is to say that we all have a seed of sin in us. When the seed germinates, it will bring forth the fruits of that sin. We are separated from God through that sin.
God gives a person the chance to receive the truth and to turn from their sins and live for Him. If they refuse the truth and love their sins more than the truth, then they reject the plea from God. When they make this choice, then God can turn them over to their desire that they have chosen. They go on to indulge themselves in the sins that they have chosen. They are then reprobate. He appealed to them, but they refused to listen.
John 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
