  • Today I join Scott and his crew Billy and Kier on the Commercial Fishing Vessel St George out of Eastbourne. I am spending a day in the life of a Cuttlefisherman. We work their commercial cuttlefish cages and land their catch to the local seafood merchant - / 100072586923906 . We discuss the methods, biology and life cycles of cuttlefish and also the restrictions and legislation around it.

      @Savajam ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheFishLocker How do you claim this is a sustainable fishery? The ICES assessment indicated that the stock was likely to have been overfished and subject to overfishing. Concerns about biomass are supported by decreasing trends in English Channel cuttlefish landings and population indices, where recorded. French surveys, conducted by IFREMER, suggest a decreasing trend in abundance in the eastern part of the English Channel between 2006-2014. Marine Management Organisation reported landings in 2021 were also considerably below the five year average (2,616 tonnes versus 4,531 tonnes), which may be due to low stock levels. Additionally, although limited recent studies are available, studies indicate that the English Channel cuttlefish population is either fully or over exploited.

    here in Whyalla South Australia we have the only known yearly aggregation of the giant cuttlefish.
    These grow up to 10kg and come to the rocky coast at Pt Lowly to breed at the start of winter.
    Some years ago the commercial fishers discovered this and decimated the breeding stock in one month.
    Fishing restrictions were implemented initially but now it is illegal to take them at any time of the year.
