That would be my dream gig. Check out the song "Midnight Glow" by Erik Blue...I produced it and played on it and Keith Carlock from Steely Dan is on drums.....that whole record is an ode to the Dan.
I’m with you. From time to time I pull out my P90’s SG, play a few tunes, then remember why it’s collecting dust. The P90’s?… one trick pony? Possibly. That’s kinda what I’m feeling. However, that ONE trick is pretty special if you can dial it in. That being said, just need more versatility with these wedding, corporate, one nighter gigs I’ve been playing. Stratocaster seems to feels right in the pocket for me, and covers all the bases come show time. Just my opinion though. Thanks, Ernest in Lexington, KY
So great, love this, some players have it and here it is, the attack, the flow of consciousness, the joy, could listen for hours....brilliant.....Also as a massive gear devourer this last two years, it made me almost buy a tonex one, but I have bought a million pedals this year 😅...I must ARRET!
Man thank you so much. So many are into the stories and I still like putting out these playing videos from time to time. Your post is much appreciated.
Hi Brad. I agree. The guitar looks very cool. Love the color too, but I've never been able to get into p-90's either. I owned an older p-90's SG, and after messing with it and trying different amps pedals with it, I just never could get comfortable with it. The last p-90 guitar I had was a gold top LP about 15 years ago. Man, I really wanted to love that thing, but after messing with the setup (pickups), and playing it for a few months, It just wasn't for me. Lots of players that play them and I love how they make them sound, but I could never get comfortable with one myself. Sometimes that happens. Gear that others use with great success, just maybe isn't for you. I also agree about modding guitars, pickups etc. In the 80's it was mod, mod, mod. Now a day, if I can't get a guitar setup and sounding the way I like, instead of swapping PUPs, I just sell it, so it doesn't lose any value. lol The next owner may love it. It happens. Oh also. I just ordered one of those Ibanez chameleon guitars to play around with. They do look awesome. lol should be here next week.
P90 Imo are a perfect Pickup. Stuck a p90 rail meant for the neck into my strat in the bridge position because it had lower gain than the bridge model with two gfs vintage singles middle and neck and omg. Love that guitar. Have 135 dollars into it. The gfs singles blew away my custom shop fenders to my ears. Or I don't like fat 50's Blowes people away that play fenders and try mine and they shake their head in disbelief that it pays amd wounds better than their 2k dollar fender
Seymour duncan p90 silencer pickups. Jared James makes a signature model silencer by Seymour duncan. A great overdrive is a DOD 250 with P90. Phil X uses a Klon overdrive.
@@badbrad nope I haven't! But I've watched Jared James and videos on them. I've played the SG's at daves guitar shop with the p90 stock pickups. Another thing I saw was putting foam behind the pickups.
You can get a Variable Impedance Boost that changes the sound of pickups without actually changing pickups (they say), I havent bought one yet. A company from Germany that hand makes their pedals makes one called a VIB. I have a couple of their pedals. The pedal maker is OKKO, I have their Diablo Gain Plus pedal and play every note through their OKKO Coca Compressor pedal which is a studio grade optical compressor, simple 2 knob unit that also helps with settling down unruly pickups
@@badbrad You bet, since I havent owned the VIB pedal I don't know anything other than what they claim. But the Coca does help with noisy pickups. Another idea is to use a Line Conditioner. that cleans the electricity coming into your rig, I use the Tripplite LCR2400 rack mounted unit and its been worth every penny protecting my gear and cleaning the electricity into my gear. Good luck with it bro
Start messing with the noise you’ll begin to step on the tone. If you’re happy with how it sounds don’t change it. I use a TC Electronic Sentry noise gate. You can really dial it in for subtle noise suppression. But a little noise is expected.
Hey Brad...."Try shielding your guitar to reduce P-90 pickup noise. It involves lining the guitar's cavities with conductive material like copper tape. It can get a little complex unfortunately...May need a guitar tech....
Gfs believe it or not makes a fantastic p90. As does Dylan does tone. Big price difference but I love bang for the buck. Only guitar I have done that covers bucket and strat is micheal kelly patriot supreme. Two gfs alnico 5's Split with a treble bleed mod orange drops and a small resistor on the ground for the split of the coils kills the hum and make them sound exactly like a killer p90. But take the guitar apart and paint it with shielding pain. Check and cleanup the wiring if needed, sometimes humans miss things is it grounded right? They shouldn't be that noisy.
I haven’t played in a long time but I am looking at a Gibson SG jr with a single filtertron pickup and it sounds really awesome. I wonder why Gibson hasn’t considered an option of a dynasonic pick up where normally there is a p90 for the SG jr.
Hey Brad good luck in Florida. I'm using Wolftone P90s in my Gibson Special double cut 2000. They're called Mean and Meaner. I'm new to P90s but digging them.
Check out Simon Jarrett playing the Wolftone P90s on an Epiphone LP. He talks about positioning the guitar to keep them quiet and other ideas on how to use them.
I'm surprised that you are getting this level of noise Brad. I have a set of P90's on a cheap guitar I picked up from Amazon and I"m not getting this noise. Leads me to wonder if you might have something going on with the wiring. Apparently, poor ground can produce noise. You might check this Stew Mac video Brad..."Noisy guitar pick ups? Here's how to easily fix them!"
I have a Gibson LP Special with P90’s its way down the line of my gigging LP’s. However sometimes I get a wild hair and break it out. the noise is aggravating. I just step on my tuner pedal at the end of the song or roll my volume off. Just wait until you get it in a club with bad power. You will be fighting it all night and telling yourself this thing has to go.

@@badbrad I have an epiphone modern s g that is awesome my first s g I am 64 and playing since 80s and never picked up an s g till this week I got it Wednesday and I love it not p 90 but it sounds and plays amazing trap inlay with ebony fretboard pro buckers with phase switch and coil taps I was impressed it is a solid guitar
I have played live with a similar guitar with no major noise issues. I love p90s. They are just a nice middle ground of meat but with a brighter sound
Good to know!
Killer tune/playing Brad.
Thank you!🙏

Yes indeed hard to beat a good Strat!
